Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghawri was the last of the Mamluk Sultans. One of the last of the Burji dynasty, he reigned from 1501 to 1516.[1]
Sultan al-Ghawri led his army against the Ottoman Turks in a battle at Marj Dabiq, north of Aleppo, on August 24, 1516. Loss of this battle and death of the Sultan al-Ghawri at the same time, marked the end of Mamluke control of the Middle East that subsequently passed to Ottomans over the next few years.
