Karen Kamensek (born January 2, 1970 in Chicago) is the Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Staatsoper Hannover^[1]. She has held this position since 2011^[2].

Education

Ms. Kamensek holds degrees in orchestral conducting and piano performance from Indiana University.

Career

In addition to her current position as the Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Staatsoper Hannover, she has also served as the 1st Kapellmeister of the Volksoper Wien from 2000 to 2002, Music Director of the Theater Freiburg from 2003 to 2006, Interim Music Director at the Slovenian National Theatre in Maribor from 2007 to 2008, and Associate Music Director at Staatsoper Hamburg from 2008 to 2011.^{[citation needed]}

Guest conducting

Ms. Kamensek has guest conducted several opera companies, leading productions at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Volksoper Wien, San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera (touring), Opera Australia, Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, San Diego Opera, and Frankfurt Opera.^{[citation needed]} In September 2014, she made her San Francisco Opera debut conducting a new production of Carlisle Floyd's Susannah.^[3] She is making her English National Opera debut in March 2016 conducting Philip Glass' Akhnaten. Ms. Kamensek has frequently collaborated with Glass and conducted the recording of the composers Les Enfants Terribles, which was release on the Orange Mountain Music label in 2005^[4].

Ms. Kamensek has guest conducted many orchestras, including Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Bruckner Orchester Linz, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wein, Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur, Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille, San Antonio Symphony, Philharmoniker Hamburger, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Halle, Orchestra of the MDR Sifonieorchester Leipzig, and the Orchestre National de Montpellier, among others.
