EXO (/ˌɛks ˈoʊ/ EKS-oh; Template:Lang-ko) is a South Korean-Chinese boy band produced by S.M. Entertainment that debuted in 2012. EXO comprises twelve members who are separated into two subgroups, EXO-K and EXO-M. The band has been promoting with 10 members since mid October, 2014. The former releases music in South Korea, while the latter promotes music in mainland China. EXO's name was taken from exoplanet,[1] a term referring to planets outside of the Solar System.

Suho (Korean: 수호; Hanja: 守護) is the leader of EXO-K.[2] Born Kim Jun-myeon (Korean: 김준면; Hanja: 金俊勉) on (1991-05-22) May 22, 1991 (age 33)[3] in Seoul, South Korea. At sixteen, he became the first member of EXO to become a trainee at SM,[4] and was discovered through the company's street casting system in 2006. In 2007, Suho was cast as an extra in the Super Junior film, Attack on the Pin-Up Boys, and in 2008, he made a brief appearance in TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" with fellow Exo bandmates Kai and Chanyeol.

On February 15, 2012, Suho was introduced as the tenth member of EXO.[5] Pursuing a degree in acting, he currently attends Korea National University of Arts and is ranked in the top 50 of 400 students at the school.[6] He enjoys listening to funk rock and has expressed his admiration for Super Junior's leader, Leeteuk, and TVXQ's leader, U-Know Yunho.[7] In February 2014, Suho became an MC of popular music show Inkigayo[8] alongside fellow bandmember Baekhyun and also ZE:A's Kwanghee. They were later joined by actress Kim Yoo-jung. Both Suho and Baekhyun left the show on November 16, 2014 to focus on EXO's comeback in 2015.

Suho was cast as the lead in the Christmas movie Saving Santa, dubbing the voice of the main character Bernard, along with Apink's Jung Eun-ji and Shin Dong-yup. In January 2015, he starred in the S.M. Entertainment musical 'School OZ', playing the character of Hans with f(x)'s Luna, SHINee's Key, EXO-M's Xiumin, TVXQ's Changmin and Red Velvet's Seulgi.[9] Suho is the next member that will be making his movie debut through the independent film titled “Glory Day", starring Ji-soo and Shinhwa's Kim Dong-wan. The filming will starting in mid-May.[10]

Baekhyun (Korean: 변백현; Hanja: 邊伯賢), born Byun Baek-hyun on (1992-05-06) May 6, 1992 (age 32)[3] in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is one of the main vocalists of EXO, and a main vocalist of sub-unit EXO-K.[11] He is a former student of Jungwon High School. Baekhyun was a member of the school's band and attended several musical festivals, later winning an award at a local rock festival. He joined S.M. Entertainment in 2011 through the S.M. Casting System.[12] Baekhyun was studying for his college musical entrance exams when he joined the label.[4]

Baekhyun was one of the last members to join EXO,[13] and was revealed as the group's ninth member on January 30, 2012.[14] Byun has cited Rain as one of his main influences and hopes to emulate Rain's "well-rounded" success.[12]

In 2012, Baekhyun was featured in the music video of Twinkle by Girls' Generation-TTS together with fellow members Park Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun. Baekhyun has been a host of Korean music show Inkigayo since February 2014 alongside ZE:A's Kwanghee, actress Lee Yu-bi (later being replaced by actress Kim Yoo-jung) and fellow member Suho. On November 16, 2014, both Baekhyun and Suho left Inkigayo to focus on EXO's comeback in 2015.

In July 2014, he starred in a Korean adaptation of the musical "Singin' in the Rain" produced by SM C&C.[15]

Baekhyun released the song 'Beautiful' for the web-drama "EXO Next Door" on 22 April 2015. It became the first OST single from a web drama to top digital charts.[16][17] At the end of April it was announced that Baekhyun will be making his big screen debut through the action film “Dokgo”, starring Yeo Jin-goo.[18] On May 15, 2015 Baekhyun, Chanyeol & Chen with other artists such Girl's Day, Sistar, Niel and Ailee sang the KBS1 Special Program 'I Am Korea' theme song, "The Day We Met", for Gwangbok's 70th Anniversary".[19] Byun Baekhyun and Park Chanyeol appeared on KBS "Superman is Back" babysitting Lee Hwi-jae's sons.[20]

Chanyeol (Korean: 박찬열; Hanja: 朴燦烈), born Park Chan-yeol on (1992-11-27) November 27, 1992 (age 32)[3] in Seoul, South Korea, is one of the main rappers of EXO and the main rapper of its sub-group EXO-K.[21] He attended Hyundai Chungun High School in Dong-gu, Ulsan and was admitted to a private acting institution when he was sixteen years old.[4] Chanyeol has been a fan of musical instruments since his primary school years and has cited the film School of Rock to be his main influence in inspiring him to learn the drums.

During middle school, Chanyeol formed the band "Heavy Noise" with his friends.[13] After winning second place in a televised uniform modeling contest in 2008,[22] Chanyeol successfully auditioned for S.M. Entertainment through the S.M. Casting System. During this time, he was involved in his school's band, "Seiren."[13] He made several media appearances prior to his debut with Exo, including TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" with Suho and Kai in 2008, and in 2010, he starred in the music video of Girls' Generation Japanese single, "Genie". He was also featured as a cameo in Girls' Generation-TTS's Twinkle's music video along with fellow members Kai, Sehun, and Baekhyun.

Chanyeol was the twelfth and last member of EXO to be formally introduced to the public, on February 23, 2012. He cites Jason Mraz and Eminem to be his biggest influences[23] Chanyeol guest starred in the second episode of the 2013 sitcom, Royal Villa, with fellow member Sehun. He also appeared in K.Will's music video You Don't Know Love.

In 2014 Chanyeol was a member of SBS's Law of the Jungle in Micronesia and the first season of SBS's Roommate but left in September because of scheduling conflicts. He made his big screen debut in the 2015 film Salut d'Amour alongside Moon Ga-young and Han Ji-min, the former having co-starred with Chanyeol in EXO's web drama EXO Next Door. He was also featured in the 2015 JTBC's variety show Dating Alone.

D.O. (Template:Lang-ko) is one of the main vocalists of EXO, and the other main vocalist of its sub-group EXO-K.[24] Born Do Kyung-soo (Korean: 도경수; Hanja: 都暻秀) on (1993-01-12) January 12, 1993 (age 31)[3] in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. D.O. has been singing since primary school and was an avid participant in local singing competitions throughout his high school career. In 2010, he was recommended to audition for S.M. Entertainment after winning at a local singing festival.[25] He subsequently became an S.M. Entertainment trainee during his last two years of high school.[13] He performed Na Yoon-kwon's "Anticipation" and Brown Eyed Soul's "My Story" at his S.M. audition.[25]

D.O. was formally introduced as the eighth member of Exo on January 30, 2012.[14] His stage name is derived from his family name, Do.[26] He sees Yoo Young-jin, S.M.'s music producer, as his role model.[27] On July 29, 2013, he was featured in f(x)'s song "Goodbye Summer", a track from their album Pink Tape.

D.O. also had his feature film debut in the movie Cart. He became 2nd member from EXO to have his own solo OST "Crying Out" (외침) for the movie.[28] He played the role of Han Kang Woo in the SBS' drama It's Okay, That's Love, starring Jo In-sung and Gong Hyo-jin in the lead roles.[29] With his acting in It's Okay, That's Love, D.O. was nominated for and won several awards as a new actor. In May 2015, SM confirmed that D.O. would take on his first lead role in a big screen piece, Pure Love, as a young man in love with a sick girl in a relationship of innocent love.

Kai

Kai (Template:Lang-ko) was born Kim Jong-in (Korean: 김종인; Hanja: 金鍾仁) on (1994-01-14) January 14, 1994 (age 30)[3] in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. The first Exo member to sign with S.M. Entertainment, Kai joined the company after winning in the 10th S.M. Youth Best Contest in 2007, at thirteen years old. He said that it was Shinhwa who inspired him to be a dancer.[25]

Known as the group's main dancer, Kai has been dancing since he was eight years old and was trained in jazz dance and ballet. He stated that his parents initially wanted him to learn Taekwondo and the piano, but he quickly lost interest in both. After watching The Nutcracker when he was in fourth grade, Kai expressed his wish to study ballet professionally. He developed his current technical expertise of hip hop, popping, and locking after joining S.M. Entertainment.[25] In 2008, Kai made a brief appearance in TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" along with EXO's Suho and Chanyeol.

Kai was the first of twelve Exo members to be formally introduced to the public through teaser trailers. His first teaser was released on December 23, 2011.[30] He appeared in twelve more trailers released in the next three months, and had his first televised performance with EXO-M's Lu Han, Chen and Tao on SBS's Gayo Daejun event on December 29, 2011. Kai graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2012.

Kai is also associated with the promotional singing group, Younique Unit, with EXO-M's Lu Han, and S.M. Entertainment's dance group, S.M. The Performance, with EXO-M's Lay. He also appeared as a cameo on Girls' Generation-TTS's Twinkle MV with fellow members Sehun, Baekhyun and Chanyeol. He was featured in Shinee's Lee Taemin's song "Pretty Boy".[31]

Sehun

Sehun

Sehun (Korean: 오세훈; Hanja: 吳世勳), born Oh Se-hun on (1994-04-12) April 12, 1994 (age 30)[3] in Seoul, South Korea. He is the youngest in EXO. Sehun was scouted by a casting agent on the streets when he was twelve, and was finally cast into S.M. Entertainment in 2008, after going through four auditions in two years. On January 10, 2012, he was introduced as the fifth member of EXO.[32]

Sehun made a brief appearance in Girls' Generation-TTS's music video for "Twinkle" alongside fellow members Baekhyun, Chanyeol, and Kai. He graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2013. Sehun starred as a cameo and guest in the second episode of the 2013 sitcom, Royal Villa, with fellow member Chanyeol. In April 2015, Sehun starred alongside his band members in the web-series EXO Next Door, also starring S.M. Culture & Contents actress Moon Ga-young.[33] He has performed in a various number of BoA's live performances for her track "Only One" and has also featured in her music video for 'Who are you' from BoA's eighth Korean-language studio album, Kiss My Lips.

EXO-M

Kris

Kris[34] (Chinese: 吴亦凡; pinyin: Wú Yìfán; Template:Lang-ko) was the leader of Exo-M[2] and performed as the group's rapper. Born Wu Yifan, Kris (Kevin Li)[35] (Chinese: 李嘉恒; pinyin: Lǐ Jiāhéng) on (1990-11-06) November 6, 1990 (age 34)[3] in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, Wu holds Canadian citizenship. Wu attended Guangzhou No. 47 High School, Point Grey Secondary School and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in Vancouver, Canada and was the captain of the basketball teams for both these schools.

In 2007, at age 16, Wu auditioned for S.M. Entertainment's Canadian S.M. Global Auditions, which was held in Vancouver, British Columbia on October 14, 2007. He was attending Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School at the time of the casting. After passing the auditions, he moved to South Korea the following year and became an S.M. trainee. Prior to joining EXO, he made an appearance in an intermission video for the Girls' Generation Tour in 2011.

Wu was introduced as the eleventh member of Exo on February 17, 2012.[36] He speaks fluent Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and Korean.

As of May 15, 2014, Kris has filed a lawsuit against S.M. Entertainment to terminate his contract, which is based on a disagreement towards activities between himself and S.M. The idol stated he had been treated as if he was an object rather than being respected as an artist. Wu Yi Fan's side also mention that SM one-sidedly decided on the schedules, not giving thought to his opinion or health condition and that SM was restricting Kris from his basic human right to freedom and his choices career wise.[37]

On February 5, 2015, S.M. Entertainment took legal actions against Kris Wu and Lu Han, inactive members of EXO-M, for continuing their own activities in China. Currently, S.M. Entertainment is embroiled in a contract termination lawsuit against Kris and Luhan. Despite the lawsuit and having ceased activities as an EXO-M member, the two entertainers have continued activities in China as actors.[38]

On February 6, 2015, S.M. Entertainment failed to reach an agreement with Wu Yi Fan after 4 mediation rounds.[39]

Xiumin

Xiumin

Xiumin (Chinese: 秀珉; pinyin: Xiùmǐn; Template:Lang-ko), born Kim Min-seok (Korean: 김민석; Hanja: 金珉錫) on (1990-03-26) March 26, 1990 (age 34),[3] is from Guri, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. In 2008, at the age of 18, he was cast into S.M. Entertainment after winning second place in the S.M. Everysing Contest. Xiumin was formally introduced as the seventh member of Exo on January 26, 2012 following a joint teaser with Exo-K's Kai.[40][41] He is currently serving as the group's lead vocalist and lead dancer within the group. Xiumin is a former schoolmate of Infinite's Dongwoo.

In 2013, Xiumin was featured on the music video of "Gone" by Lovelyz member JIN, alongside actress Kim Yoo-jung.,[42] making it his first acting appearance.

In January 2015, he starred in the S.M. Entertainment musical 'School OZ', playing the character of Aquila with f(x)'s Luna, SHINee's Key, EXO-K's Suho, TVXQ's Changmin and Red Velvet's Seulgi.[9] Xiumin also guested on three consecutive episodes of JTBC's Crime Scene 2, taking on the role of a ballad singer, vocal singer and manager. In May 2015, Xiumin would be making his big-screen debut in a historical movie called "Kim Sun Dal" directed by Park Dae Min, starring alongside actor Yoo Seung-ho.

Luhan

Luhan (Chinese: 鹿晗; pinyin: Lù Hán; Template:Lang-ko), born on (1990-04-20) April 20, 1990 (age 34),[3] is from Haidian District, Beijing, China. He graduated from the Beijing Shida Middle School and attended the boarding school, Beijing Haidian Foreign Language Shi Yan School, before leaving for South Korea to attend Yonsei University as an exchange student. Lu Han had auditioned for JYP Entertainment's Chinese global auditions in 2008,[43][44] but failed to get cast.

While studying in Seoul, Lu Han was scouted by an S.M. Entertainment casting agent, who recommended him to audition for the company's annual S.M. Casting System. His audition was successful, and Lu Han joined Exo in 2011. Lu was the second of the twelve Exo members to be formally introduced to the public, on December 27, 2011.[45] Along with Tao, Chen, and Exo-K's Kai, Lu Han made his first televised performance on SBS's Gayo Daejun event on December 29, 2011. Lu Han currently attends the Seoul Institute of the Arts majoring in Applied Music. Lu Han is also associated with the promotional dance group, Younique Unit, with Exo-K's Kai. On April 23 Luhan was announced to be cast in 20 Once Again a Chinese re-make of the Korean movie Miss Granny.[46] Shooting started May 20, 2014 and the film was released on January 8, 2015.[47]

On October 10, 2014 Luhan filed a lawsuit to nullify his exclusive contract with S.M. Entertainment, allegedly for health reasons.[48]

On February 5, 2015, S.M. Entertainment took legal actions against Kris (Wu Yifan) and Luhan, inactive members of EXO-M, for continuing their own activities in China. Currently, S.M. Lay

Lay

Lay (Template:Lang-ko), born Zhang Yixing (simplified Chinese: 张艺兴; traditional Chinese: 張藝興; pinyin: Zhāng Yǐxīng) on (1991-10-07) October 7, 1991 (age 33),[3] is from Changsha, Hunan, China. He is the main dancer of Exo-M. Lay was a local child star in Hunan, having won third place in a competition hosted by the popular TV program, Star Academy (明星學院) in 2005. He also appeared in an episode of Yue Ce Yue Kai Xin (越策越開心) and Liu Na's variety show, Na Ke Bu Yi Yang (娜可不一樣) that same year.

Lay joined S.M. Entertainment in 2008 after a successful audition with the company's global casting system in Changsha. At the time of the auditions, he was 16 years old and was studying for his college entrance exams.[40] In 2011, prior to debuting with Exo, he briefly worked for SHINee in their concert tour as Jonghyun's dance replacement. Lay was formally introduced as a member of Exo on January 17, 2012.[50] He is also associated with the group, S.M. The Performance, with Exo-K's Kai.

Lay was ranked 5th on Baidu's “2014 Top 10 Most Popular Celebrities” list, along with label-mates, Victoria of f(x) and Luhan.[51] In March 2015, SM Entertainment announced that they have established a personal studio for Lay for his individual activities in China.[52] For the June 19th edition of "Music Billboard Charts," Lay was a special temporary MC.[53] He joined Chinese variety show, Go Fighting!, as a cast member in May 2015.[54] He will make his Chinese film debut with Oh My God[55][56] and drama debut with To Be A Better Man.[57]

Chen

Chen

Chen (Template:Lang-ko) is one of the main vocalists of EXO, and the main vocalist of EXO-M. Born Kim Jong-dae (Korean: 김종대; Hanja: 金鐘大) on (1992-09-21) September 21, 1992 (age 32)[3] in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, Chen has one older brother, Kim Jong-deok. Chen was the last Exo member scouted by S.M. Entertainment; he auditioned for S.M. through the S.M. Casting System in early 2011, at age 18.

Chen was the fourth member to be formally introduced to the public, on December 29, 2011.[58] Along with Lu Han, Tao, and Exo-K's Kai, Chen had his first televised performance at the SBS Gayo Daejun event on December 29, 2011.

On February 4, 2014, SM revealed that the group SM the Ballad would make a comeback with new members, including Chen. He sang the Chinese version of the title track, Breath, with Zhang Liyin, as well as the tracks A Day Without You with Shinee's Jonghyun and When I Was... When U Were... with f(x)'s Krystal for SM the Ballad's second mini album SM the Ballad Vol. 2 – Breath.[59]

Chen also sang 'Best Luck' for the drama It's Okay, That's Love's OST and received awards in the 5th So-Loved Awards and the 16th Seoul International Youth Film Festival under the categories Best OST by a Male Artist and Best OST Song.[60][61] He was invited as a special performer to the 2014 APAN Star Awards on November 11, 2014, where he performed the track live.[62]

On April 11, 2015, Chen made his hosting debut as a special MC for the Korean music show Show! Music Core.[63] On May 15, 2015 Chen, Chanyeol & Baekhyun with other artists such Girl's Day, Sistar, Niel and Ailee sang a KBS1's Special Program 'I Am Korea' theme song "The Day We Met" for Gwangbok 70th Anniversary".[19] On August 30, 2015, he became the runner-up in the eleventh round of King of Mask Singer under the name "Legendary Guitar Man".[64]

Tao

Tao

Tao (Template:Lang-ko), born Huang Zitao (Chinese: 黄子韬; pinyin: Huáng Zitāo) on (1993-05-02) May 2, 1993 (age 31)[3] in Qingdao, Shandong, China. Tao is the lead rapper of Exo-M. He attended Humen Centre Primary School, one of the most prestigious primary schools in Qingdao, and Qingdao Middle School. Tao is a martial artist, and has been practicing Wushu since he was five years old,[65] and competed in several martial arts championships in Qingdao. Tao won the "Top Rap Award" at Beijing's 3rd Annual Collage Street Jam.[citation needed]

Tao auditioned for S.M. Entertainment's global casting system in Qingdao and became an S.M. trainee in late 2010. He was one of the last Exo members to join the company and had a training period of less than one year.[40] On December 27, 2011, Tao was formally introduced to the public as the third member of Exo.[66] Along with Lu Han, Chen, and Exo-K's Kai, Tao made his first televised performance on SBS Gayo Daejeon event on December 29, 2011.

In 2013 during the months of August and September, Tao took part in filming for MBC's celebrity diving program Splash!.[67] After a run of four episodes, the show was cancelled due to a number of celebrities who were reportedly injured.[68] The episodes aired from August 23, 2013 to September 13, 2013.

In June 2014, Tao was spotted filming for Zhang Liyin's music video for her single Agape, alongside labelmate Victoria of f(x). The music video was released on August 5, 2014.[69] Tao was featured on the track "Love Tonight" and in the Chinese-language recording and music video of "Rewind" for Zhou Mi's debut solo album Rewind. The music video was released on October 30, 2014.[70]

In July 2014, it was confirmed that Tao would be joining the Solomon Islands edition of SBS' Laws of the Jungle. The episodes aired from September 12, 2014 to November 21, 2014.[71] In January 2015, Tao was cast for the role of William in the Chinese movie adaptation You Are My Sunshine starring Huang Xiaoming and Yang Mi which was released on April 30, 2015.[72]

On April 22, 2015, Tao's father posted a letter through Weibo expressing his sentiments for his son to withdraw from the group and return to China due to lack of support concerning individual career developments and health issues.[73] Tao had previously sustained several injuries, including a torn ligament in his ankle, that had not been properly treated and caused him to be absent during promotions for the group's second studio album Exodus. Through an interview with Chinese media outlet Sina, Tao's father stated that Tao had agreed to discuss possible contract termination.[74] On April 23, 2015, S.M. Entertainment released an official statement saying that they would be "seeking a solution in a developmental direction" by negotiating with Tao and his father.[75] On May 29, 2015, S.M. Entertainment released another statement regarding Tao amidst the group's return as nine members for the repackage album Love Me Right, stating that negotiations were still ongoing and it could not currently be confirmed whether Tao would be withdrawing from the group. The company also stated that Tao would not be participating in promotions for Love Me Right.[76]

On August 24, 2015, Tao filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment for termination of his contract and he's being represented by the same legal team as Kris and Luhan.[77] SM Entertainment responded to his legal actions by stating: "Our company plans to use everything in our power including both Korean and Chinese legal professionals and partners to respond legally both in Korea and China in a multi-faceted manner. We also plan to take legal steps to respond to Tao's illegal promotions and actions."[78]
