Book of Potions (or Wonderbook: Book of Potions) is a 2013 augmented reality video game developed by SCE London Studio in conjunction with J. K. Rowling as a companion to the Harry Potter series and as a followup to the Wonderbook's debut title, Book of Spells. It was released in Europe on 15 November 2013[1] and North America on 12 November 2013, alongside Diggs Nightcrawler and Walking with Dinosaurs.[2]

Plot

At Hogwarts, Harry Potter then finds a book about potions in the Restricted Area of the library, but Lord Voldemort has risen again and won't make his life easy, so he will need help from the escaped prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius Black to help him.

Story

In 1995, Harry Potter, the Gryffindor Student who was 14 years old, somehow comes into possession of the Book of Potions in his forth year at Hogwarts, finding that some of Sirius Black's personality lives on within its pages. Under his tutelage, Harry begins their ascent to potioneering mastery. After successfully brewing an introductory boil-curing potion for the house elf, Dobby, who is a slave for Lucius Malfoy. Harry finds that they have somehow been entered into the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship, a septennial contest between students from magic schools across the globe.

With Sirius's help, Harry Potter brews various potions to overcome the obstacles standing between them and the Golden Cauldron, which, after brewing and imbibing Sirius's self-proclaimed finest work, Felix Felicis, they successfully obtain. Having done so, Harry earns the right to use the cauldron to brew a new potion all their own. After finding some exceptionally rare ingredients, the student brews a potion which is revealed to be the "Potion of All Potential", which enables its drinker to reach their highest capability.

Sirius initially comes off as warped and slightly mad, thinking of little but the Golden Cauldron, but, as Harry's potioneering skills improve, he finds himself warming to them, eventually revealing exactly why Salazar Slytherin left Hogwarts: as a student, Sirius asked the headmaster, Professor Albus Dumbledore, if Harry could enter the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship despite being three years below the minimum age for entry, but he was denied, being told that it was too dangerous. Unable to accept this, Sirius immediately left the school in protest, which disabled him from entering the Championship even once he had come of age.

Once Harry wins the Golden Cauldron, Sirius's spirit finds itself at peace after Harry defeated Voldemort in a magic duel, and he congratulates them wholeheartedly for both obtaining it and brewing the Potion of All Potential. Saying that Voldemort will no longer cause trouble for anyone else, Sirius Black leaves Harry to meet their "adoring public".

Chapters

Chapter 1

The story begins at Hogwarts where Dobby the elf is working for Lucius Malfoy. The library gets covered in purple smoke and Harry finds the "Book of Potions" and discovers that this book has been classified Dangerous by the Hogwarts librarian. Soon, the prisoner, Sirius Black warns him that Lord Voldemort has come back to murder Cedric Diggory. Soon, Harry begins to make the Cure for Boils potion to cure Dobby. A cauldron arrives for Harry to add the ingredients to the potion. Harry adds the blue liquid into the potion then heats it up. But as Harry added the basilisk fang, he discovers that Draco Malfoy, his arch-nemesis, has stolen the ingredient's label. Sirius Black finds the right ingredient for Harry and the potion is going along greatly. After Harry stirred the potion with the spoon, he chopped up five Pungous Onions and added them in. Harry used the magnifying glass to collect some leaves from the stinging nettle. He added the stinging nettle leaves into the cauldron, then Flobberworm Mucus, then stirred it up again. Harry then added the ginger root liquid, then stirred the mixture. He added some Shrake spine and stirred it up again and added Horned Slugs and porcupine quills into the cauldron. With a wave of his wand, the potion was done. Harry used a bottle from Severus Snape to scoop some of the potion and poured it onto Dobby. The elf was cured, but Harry will need to use everything to defeat Voldemort.

Gameplay

Book of Potions is almost identical to Book of Spells in terms of gameplay; the PlayStation Eye renders the book and its effects while the PlayStation Move controller acts as a wand, as well as other instruments, such as a knife for chopping ingredients and a spoon for stirring the contents of a cauldron.

Like its predecessor, the game begins with the player choosing one of the four Hogwarts houses and one of three wands. Alternatively, if the player has a Pottermore account, they can log into it through the game and the choices will be made automatically to reflect those made on the Pottermore website.

The game consists of seven chapters, each focussing on a particular potion. Each chapter follows roughly the same structure: an introduction to the potion and its effect(s), gathering ingredients, brewing the potion, a short story related to the potion (which features some multiple-choice fill-in-the-blank interactivity), and, finally, using the potion to advance in the Wizarding Schools Potion Championship.

Finding certain hidden creatures during the gathering of ingredients will unlock those ingredients in the Concoctions mode, where the player can freely experiment and create custom potions by combining up to four of any of their gathered ingredients.

Reception

In a joint review with Walking with Dinosaurs, Telegraph writer Andy Robertson (who also reviewed Diggs Nightcrawler) gave the game a positive review, noting the increased interaction with the Wonderbook itself compared to Book of Spells, as well as clearer signposting helping to make progression easier and more instinctive.[3]
