Sorry, can't see how to create a new topic. My comment is that the admin, demographics etc sections are worded as if the Australian islands were the only islands. They should be expanded to include the PNG islands, or renamed to explicitly exclude them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.253.233.77 (talk) 02:35, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

Needs locator map showing location with respect to Australia. -- Beland 05:30, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article Manar Group has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for references found no published (gBook) references for an island group "Manar Group", the word combination is previlant, but nothing found with "island", Web hits are wiki mirrors. Fails WP:V and WP:V

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Concern about naming conventions for islands

Why are island names in this article in English with the local-name, transliterated, and following? Why is it not disrespectful for the authors to have done that? Particularly now that the courts in Australia have found that the people own the land.

If there is no cogent argument to retain the name-order, I will change all of the names to the Torres Strait form, followed by the English in the first instance. I will wait until the end of September before doing that. Lin (talk) 05:59, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Clarity over Political and Geographical borders

"A few islands very close to the coast of mainland New Guinea belong to the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, most importantly Daru Island with the provincial capital, Daru."

This should go along the lines of "few of the islands of the Torres Strait close to the Papuan mainland (like Daru and Parama) are politically part of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea."

That way, you make the distinction between the Political nature and the Geographical nature of the Torres Strait rather then merge the two and confusing people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.176.67.203 (talk) 23:37, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Independence movement

Is this a movement for independence from Australia or (as I have heard) for independence from Queensland as a separate Torres Strait Islands State within Australia?

Indigenous people

There seems to be a tendency for articles like this to gloss over the places' original inhabitants. We go straight from geography, to discovery by Europeans, to modern government without a nod to the people who lived there for 1000s of years. Added link to Torres Strait Islanders.
