Elite Beat Agents is a rhythm game developed by iNiS for the Nintendo DS. It is a spiritual sequel to Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, a Japanese rhythym game released in 2005.

Story

Although it is labelled a sequel, Elite Beat Agents holds no plot connection to the original and is adapted for a Western audience. The main characters of Elite Beat Agents are members of a fictional government agency responsible for helping those in need. Through the dancing of the agents people in need are instilled with "Groovy" energy that helps them overcome various obstacles.

One of the example scenarios revealed in the July issue of Nintendo Power has the player motivating a movie director. If the player stays in sync, he or she will inspire the director to make a great film. If the mission is failed, however, the scene will end badly for everybody.

Gameplay

The stages of Elite Beat Agents are presented in a comic book fashion. After the introducion to a character and their problem the agents are deployed and the action begins. The play mechanics involve performing one of three actions with the stylus in various combinations.

  • Hits - Operated by tapping numbered circles.
  • Tracks - Operating by tapping and holding the stylus on a circle while following it along a path.
  • Spinners - Operated by spinning the stylus around the on-screen disc until bars on either side light up.

To successfully perform each action you must complete it as a timed circle converges on each main circle. The timing follows the rhythm of the music.

Hits and tracks are often found in sequence where they must be completed in the order of the numbers on them. They are also color-coded to distinquish between multiple sequences.
