"Formation" was released on February 6, 2016, accompanied by it's official music video. It was made available for free download via the subscription-based music streaming service Tidal.[4]

"Formation"'s official music video premiered on February 6, 2016. Greg Cwik of Vulture.com writes "'Bitch I'm back,' the song starts, before Bey and a host of people start dancing seductively in the halls of Louisiana plantation homes, the street, and an empty swimming pool. 'I take what's mine / I'm a star.' Yes, yes she is".[5]

Live performances

The song is rumoured to receive its live debut at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show.[6]
