Buffalo Grove High School is a public, four-year high school serving students in grades 9-12 in Buffalo Grove, Wheeling and Arlington Heights, Illinois. Its colors are navy blue, burnt orange and white. The school mascot is a Bison. In 2003, new classrooms, a foyer, and offices opened as part of a six-million dollar new development.
Buffalo Grove is a member of the Mid-Suburban League (East), along with the District 214 and several other high schools. It opened in 1973.
This school is ranked #975 on Newsweek's 2005 list of the Best High Schools in America.[1]
Cooper Middle School, London Middle School, Thomas Middle School, Saint Mary's School, Saint Peter Lutheran School, Saint James Junior High School, and some students from Solomon Schechter Middle School all feed into BGHS. It covers the northernmost part of School District 214 and is located at the northeast corner of Dundee Road (IL Rt. 68) and Arlington Heights Road.
Alumni
- The character played by actress Lori Loughlin in the 1997 film In The Line Of Duty: Blaze Of Glory [3] was based upon a Buffalo Grove High School graduate.
- Three Major League Baseball players have graduated from Buffalo Grove High School. Mike Marshall, Tim Bogar, and Josh Paul. [4]
- Josh Paul, mentioned above, grew up a die-hard Chicago White Sox fan, and was drafted in 1996 by the team. But, in 2005, he was a backup catcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and in the ALCS was involved in the controversial "dropped 3rd-strike" play against his childhood team, the White Sox. The play resulted in the White Sox winning the game, Game 2, and gaining momentum to win the ALCS. Later, the White Sox moved on to sweep the Astros in the World Series.
- The 1984 sixth round pick of the NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints, Don Thorp (DT Illinois), graduated from Buffalo Grove High School. In his career, he also spent time on the rosters of the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Kansas City Chiefs. [5]
- The first overall pick in the 1996 MLS draft, Brian McBride, graduated from Buffalo Grove High School. He has since played in three World Cups and has been the MVP in the 1998 MLS All-star game. He currently plays for Fulham Football Club in the English Premier League
- NHL Detroit Red Wings defenceman Brett Lebda attended Buffalo Grove High School.
- University of Notre Dame football standout Tom Zbikowski graduated from Buffalo Grove High School with the class of 2003. He starred as an option quarterback and safety for the Bison, and plays safety and returns punts for the Fighting Irish.
- Actress Jessy Schram graduated from Buffalo Grove High School with the class of 2004.
Controversy
- During the 2005-2006 school year, three students were suspended for distribution of an underground newspaper. The students have created an online petition aimed at the school administration, ensuring students' rights at BGHS. [6] The staff of the underground newspaper has continued working on (yet to be released) new issues. This story was covered in a segment on Free Talk Live. [7]
- During the 2005-2006 school year, two openly gay students were elected homecoming king and queen by the student body. This story was covered by the local NBC News affiliate. [8] The original straight male nominee paired with the lesbian nominee was disqualified due to discovery of a picture of him with drug paraphernalia on a private blog.
