Tram route 55 is a public transport service in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The route runs between from the intersection of Bell Street and Melville Road in Pascoe Vale South and Domain Interchange (at the intersection of Domain Road and St Kilda Road) in Melbourne. The route is officially referred to as West Coburg - Domain Interchange.

Like most Melbourne tram routes, route 55 is entirely within myki Zone 1. Tram services are operated by Yarra Trams.

History

Between 1971 and 2005 route 55 did not operate via William Street to the Domain Interchange on Sundays - the alternate route 68 service was provided via Elizabeth Street to Flinders Street Station.[3]

During the 2006 Commonwealth Games the route was merged with route 5 to Malvern to alleviate congestion along St Kilda Road. The temporary through routing was useful in helping daily commuters utilise train stations at the city's west end, namely Flagstaff station. At Domain Interchange, a junction was instated. This set of switches has since been disabled and removed after the demerger. The route 55 has since terminated at the original terminus of Domain Interchange.

This tram route is notable for its windiness and the traverse through Royal Park for some distance. The route also includes passes the State Netball and Hockey Centre and the Melbourne Zoo with an occasional peek at the elephant's shed.
