Sam Farr (born July 4 1941), American politician, has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing the 17th District of California (map). He was born in San Francisco, California, was educated at Willamette University, Santa Clara University, and the Monterey Institute of International Studies, served in the Peace Corps, and was a staff member of the California State Assembly, a member of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, and a member of the California State Assembly before entering the House.

He was elected to Congress in a 1993 special election when longtime Democratic Rep. Leon Panetta resigned to become President Clinton's Chief of Staff.

He recently took a leadership role for the House Democrats in opposing the Central American Free Trade Agreement because he did not think it had good environmental and worker protections. Representative Farr voted against the invasion of Iraq and is a vocal voice against the Iraq War.

Farr opposes the Patriot act and is pro-choice.
