Categories are a tool for browsing: they function as a table of contents, leading users to the articles on a specific subject. Categories are a means of classifying articles |
Categories are an index of a subject |
Categories are a database search: Many categories are in essence the intersection of two or more larger categories. |

Categories are an index of other categories: There are many categories that function simply as an index of other categories. |

You may wish to make use of a 'Dates' tab in edit mode that will help with unlinking unnecessary date links. Simply copy the entire contents of [[User:Bobblewik/monobook.js]] to your own monobook. Then follow the instructions in your monobook to clear the cache (i.e. press Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox, or Ctrl-F5 in IE) before it will work. It also provides a 'Units' tab. If you know what you are doing, you can copy and modify the subfiles as you wish. I just thought you might be interested. Regards. [[User:Bobblewik|bobblewik]] 20:03, 9 June 2006 (UTC) |
:The reason it fails is because you refer to [[User:Hmains/monobook.js/dates.js]] and [[User:Hmains/monobook.js/unitformatter.js]] and these articles do not exist. You have two options: |
:* '''Option 1. ''' As described in the first 4 sentences above, make your monobook identical to mine. Then it will use the existing articles [[User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/dates.js]] and [[User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/unitformatter.js]]. |
:* '''Option 2.''' As described in the last 2 sentences, create your own subfiles [[User:Hmains/monobook.js/dates.js]] and [[User:Hmains/monobook.js/unitformatter.js]] by copying the details from [[User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/dates.js]] and [[User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/unitformatter.js]]. |
:Try again. I am happy to walk you through the process. So feel free to ask me again. [[User:Bobblewik|bobblewik]] 12:03, 10 June 2006 (UTC) |

==hold for cat discussion until find example== |
There are some categories that are used only for categories, and never for articles. Some of these categories have been made into 'hidden' categories, and yet they are never in fact 'hidden' since the hidden feature only applies to articles and not categories. So the hidden category always displays on the category screen as 'hidden'--which is obviously a contradiction. I suggest, that category categories not be classified as hidden. When I have tried to remove the hidden classification in such cases, someone always just adds it back in. Without something said in this categorization guideline I have nothing much justify my removal. |

Hello. Your account has been granted the "<tt>reviewer<tt>" userright, allowing you to [[WP:Reviewing|review other users' edits]] on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a [[WP:Pending changes|two-month trial]] scheduled to end 15 August 2010. |
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not [[wp:autoconfirmed|autoconfirmed]] to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only [[Special:StablePages|a small number of articles]], similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at [[Special:OldReviewedPages]]. |
For the guideline on reviewing, see [[Wikipedia:Reviewing]]. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found [[Help:Pending changes|here]], and the general policy for the trial can be found [[Wikipedia:Pending changes|here]]. |

I'm sorry that you're still having this frustrating problem. BJorsch named above the three different places where this problem may be caused: 1.your own computer, |
2.the WMF's servers, or |
3.a server in between you and the WMF's servers. |
Each user is necessarily responsible for cacheing problems that appear in his own browser. Please follow all the steps at [[WP:BYPASS]] and let us know if that (hopefully!) solves the problem for you. If the problem is the WMF's caches, then it will likely be fixed relatively soon. If the problem is at a third-party server in between you and the WMF (e.g., on your corporate or university network or your local ISP), then I'm afraid that there is often nothing that either you or we are able to do about it except wait for the third-party server to update its cache. == Category == |

Hi there. Would you have a moment to look at the discussion on [[User talk:Thewildone85]]s talk page? I have no beef with this editor's addition of [[:Category:Unincorporated communities in New Jersey]]. In fact, when you are searching for a place within a state, and you don't know the county, this is the easiest way to find it. It's the "master list". I support this editor's addition, but I know you are more familiar with the use of this category. Thanks. [[User:Magnolia677|Magnolia677]] ([[User talk:Magnolia677|talk]]) 03:30, 22 January 2015 (UTC) |

*I am not sure what is question. Is something being disputed here? [[User:Hmains|Hmains]] ([[User talk:Hmains#top|talk]]) 03:39, 22 January 2015 (UTC) |
:Yes. Thewildone85 has added the parent category "Unincorporated communities in New Jersey" to many New Jersey articles; another editor claims they are "unneeded and inappropriate" and plans to delete them. I think adding both the parent and child is a good edit. The parent serves as a "master list". [[User:Magnolia677|Magnolia677]] ([[User talk:Magnolia677|talk]]) 03:55, 22 January 2015 (UTC) |
**This is the same thing I tried to do but the other editor is the self-created 'owner' of New Jersey articles and categories and will not allow anything to happen to them that he disagrees with. He will fight any and all other editors with all the power that he has and do it continually with threats and ill will until he gets his way. [[User:Hmains|Hmains]] ([[User talk:Hmains#top|talk]]) 04:01, 22 January 2015 (UTC) |
:::That's one of the reasons I asked you to comment. I'm up to my ears [[Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says User:Magnolia677|here]] with this editor, so don't want to get in deeper. I actually support the addition of this category though. When I made hundreds of edits to Mississippi articles last year, it was a huge help having each town listed in the parent category. It really is the only way to have a complete list. Otherwise, you need to search through each county. I know this is your area of expertise, so any help would be appreciated. [[User:Magnolia677|Magnolia677]] ([[User talk:Magnolia677|talk]]) 04:20, 22 January 2015 (UTC) |

::::I think the only way to get change is to get admins involved but from what I see they don't want to be involved either as dealing with this editor would take all their time. [[User:Hmains|Hmains]] ([[User talk:Hmains#top|talk]]) 04:32, 22 January 2015 (UTC) |

:::::Sadly, it looks that way. Anyway, nice chatting and thanks for your many great edits. [[User:Magnolia677|Magnolia677]] ([[User talk:Magnolia677|talk]]) 04:45, 22 January 2015 (UTC) |

== Bots == |
<div class="mw-content-ltr"> |
You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on '''30 June 2015'''. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the [[:mw:API|API]], then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break. |
What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is ''not'' affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working. |
This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015. |
If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/enwiki/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code! |
* The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/enwiki/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary. |
* Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/enwiki/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly. |
Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning. |
Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the [[mail:mediawiki-api|mediawiki-api]] or [[mail:wikitech-l|wikitech-l]] mailing lists. Volunteers at [[:m:Tech]] or [[:w:en:WP:Village pump (technical)]] or [[:w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard]] may also be able to help you. |
Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. I notice that you've been placing articles on NRHP sites in categories like "NRHP in $COUNTY, $STATE". In at least a couple of cases on my watchlist—[[Meades Ranch Triangulation Station]] and [[Davis Memorial]]—you didn't remove the parent category, "NRHP in Kansas". I've taken care of that for those two articles, but you might want to check your recent edits and make sure you haven't missed any others. — [[User:Ammodramus|Ammodramus]] ([[User talk:Ammodramus|talk]]) 18:58, 3 April 2016 (UTC) |

*HRHP has two different category structures at the state level. One by county (which I adding where they are missing) and one by type of historic place: houses, buildings, etc. I do not remove HRHP articles at the state level unless they are already in such a type category. You may want add missing 'type' categories, but not just remove the articles. Keeping them at the state level is an ongoing reminder that the 'type' categorization is missing. == AWB error? == |
I've never used AWB, so I don't know how much of an actual problem this is; if you just made a typo, no problem. |
Look at [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?diff=701901624 this edit], in which you made some link changes, from <code><nowiki>[[plantation]]-style" complexes</nowiki></code> to <code><nowiki>[[plantations in the American South|plantation]]-style" |[[Plantation complexes in the Southeastern United States|complexes]]</nowiki></code> Note the pipe character after -style". Is this a problem that needs fixing, or is it merely a negligible typo, as it would be if you'd made it when editing manually? [[User:Nyttend|Nyttend]] ([[User talk:Nyttend|talk]]) 12:52, 4 April 2016 (UTC) |
*Thanks for the note. I use AWB in a rather simple way. In AWB, I create a list of strings: from-string to-string so that any time the 'from-string' is found, it gets changed to the 'to string'. Because of the infinite variation in how the articles are written, I then may have to add more from/to pairs to clean up the results to help the semi-automated results and reduce the manual corrections/fixes I have to make. In all cases, the results are then presented to me to read, which I can save as-is or perform further, manual, edits before saving or just cancelling the edit completely. AWB results do not distinguish what the table changed versus what I changed manually. And of course, as with any human effort, human errors can be introduced at any point. I see that this ended up somehow with an extra/out-of-place pipe character as you saw. I see you correctly removed it. Do you have other questions about the links I used? Any other questions about AWB? I will try to explain as best I can based on what I am doing. AWB itself seems to be rather error free. :*Thanks for the details. I have no questions nor comments about that edit, aside from the pipe character. I've never used AWB and really don't know how to make it run, so I figured I'd best just report it in case the report could help. I know it's semi-automated, so I had imagined that it was basically an automated thing that required you to press "OK" or "not-OK" before it saved each edit; I didn't realise that you would be able to do anything else without making a manual edit. I noticed you insist on reverting my edits, which I am sure you can imagine took a great deal of time. I understand your concerns, but surely you don't have to undo all the effort? Surely you could point out your concerns, and allow me the opportunity to make any corrections, rather than determining your decision on small details that you dislike, while ignoring the overall contribution? I feel it necessary to ask for the opinions of other admin on this issue, as your treatment has undermined the confidence of someone wishing to contribute in good faith. [[File:Stop hand nuvola.svg|30px|left|alt=Stop icon]] Your recent editing history at [[:List of school shootings in the United States]] shows that you are currently engaged in an [[Wikipedia:Edit warring|edit war]]. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the article's [[Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines|talk page]] to work toward making a version that represents [[Wikipedia:Consensus|consensus]] among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See [[Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle|BRD]] for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant [[Wikipedia:Noticeboards|noticeboard]] or seek [[Wikipedia:Dispute resolution|dispute resolution]]. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary [[Wikipedia:Protection policy|page protection]]. |
'''Being involved in an edit war can result in your being [[Wikipedia:Blocking policy|blocked from editing]]'''—especially if you violate the [[Wikipedia:Edit warring#The three-revert rule|three-revert rule]], which states that an editor must not perform more than three [[Help:Reverting|reverts]] on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—'''even if you don't violate the three-revert rule'''—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.<!-- Template:uw-3rr --> — [[User:Diannaa|Diannaa]] ([[User talk:Diannaa|talk]]) 21:13, 8 April 2016 (UTC) |
