Queen's College is a prestigious secondary school in Guyana. It was established in 1844 as the Queen's College Grammar School for boys.
The school became co-educational in 1975.
It is known as the most prestigeious school one can attend in guyana, since very high marks are required to get into the school. The teaching standard is high school, preparing you for university. The only way you can get into this school is attaining above 85% in marks. The dress code is very formal. It requires you to wear beige shorts for the lower leveled classes and for higher leveled classes , long pants. A yellow colored tie is also required to wear on a white T-shirt. The T-shirt must have to school motto on the left side of the shirt. For girls a white inner shirt, yellow tie, and an semi formal dress to cover everything. Black shoes and black socks are required for both males and females. The school is very strict with rules; dress code, punctuality, respect, etc. Breaking these rules will result in severe consequences. This school is almost like the army; every morning you have to line up in the halls for inspection; your shirt must be tucked in, shoes clean, tie correctly tied, etc.
The teachers are really strict in their teachings and courses are extremely rigid and intense studying is required, else failure is the result. (These are standards of yesteryear, today the school is much different. The rate of teaching, once the highest in Guyana has dropped, largely due to lack of teachers, in fact, teachers actually attending a class is a rareity these days, no one ever inspects people anymore and many people can dress in whatever fashion they see fit. Spray painting and graffiti is a big problem in the school often depicting eroticism or swears at teachers, especially the headmistress, whom many students are not particularly fond of.The school also features unhealthy toilet facilites and dilapidated classrooms.)
In 1997, the school was partially destroyed in a fire, but extensive reconstruction has been carried out. Damage was estimated at G$200 million (around US$1,000,000).
Noted alumni include former president Forbes Burnham[1], former president Cheddi Jagan, playwright Michael Abbensetts (1952-1956), novelist E.R. Braithwaite, poet Martin Carter, novelist Wilson Harris, lawyer Sir Lionel Luckhoo, and historian Walter Rodney. and NASA/JPL physicist Dr. Keith E. Wilson
The school's motto is ""Fideles Ubique Utiles" - "Loyalty Everywhere Useful".
