Mike's New Car is a 2002 Pixar computer animated short comedy film, starring the two main characters from Monsters, Inc., Sulley and Mike. Directed by Pete Docter and Roger L. Gould, it is the first Pixar short to use dialogue and the first to take characters and situations from a previously established work.

The short premiered on September 17, 2002, included in the DVD and VHS release of Monsters, Inc.^[1] It was nominated for a 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.^[2]

Synopsis

The short movie opens off with Mike telling Sulley to follow the sultry sound of his voice. He tells him to not peek. Mike says "Ta dah!". Sulley tells Mike "What was wrong with your old car?". Mike tells Sulley that it is a 6 wheel driving car. Mike tells Sulley to get in, and Sulley does it. Inside the car, Sulley plays with the seat adjuster, and Mike tells him to stop. Sulley gets his seatbelt on very easily, but Mike's seatbelt gets stuck outside. Mike accidentally locks himself outside, and realizes what's wrong with the car. Sulley pushes the wrong button, and the hood shuts on Mike's fingers. Sulley then ends up trapping Mike in the engine compartment. Mike escapes, and pushes the wrong button, causing the car to go complete chaos. Mike gets mad at Sulley, and tells him to get out of the car. Mike drives the car, but it explodes. Mike goes flying, and Sulley catches him. The short film ends off with Mike saying "I miss my old car".

Home media

Mike's New Car was released on September 17, 2002, attached as bonus feature on the Monsters, Inc. DVD and VHS release.^[1] The DVD release features commentary by "Docter and Gould", which turn out to be the directors' young children.^{[citation needed]} The short was also released on November 10, 2009, on the Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray.^[3]
