Janam ("Birth") is a 1985 Hindi film directed and written by Mahesh Bhatt. It is one of the autobiographical films Bhatt created in the early part of his career.
Story
Rahul is looked down by the society as his mother Nalini was not married to Virendra, her lover, as he had a wife living and a family. Virendra was a successful cinema director. Rahul falls in love with an orphan named Rohini and starts working desperately on a film made on his own life. It is a tremendous success and is presented the best cinema director's award at the hands of his father. Virendra is now happy to own him as a son.
Overview
Janam was created after Bhatt's acclaimed early films Arth (1982) and Saaransh (1984), and established him as a promising new director of the Indian film industry, long before he ventured into more commercial endeavours.
This film was followed by other films with similar themes from Bhatt's personal life, including Naam (1986), Zakhm (1998) and Woh Lamhe (2006), films for which he provided the story.
