Khalil Rountree Born February 26, 1990, is an American mixed martial artist from Las Vegas who competes as a light heavyweight, and contestant on Season 23 of the The Ultimate Fighter.

Early life

Rountree was born in Los Angeles, the oldest of 4 siblings to Khalil Rountree, Sr. and Taryn Moret. His father was tour manager for the R&B group, Boyz II Men, and was murdered in an attempted robbery while on tour with the band in 1992.[1] After losing his father when he was two years old, Khalil’s mother moved Khalil and his siblings to Las Vegas where she worked hard to provide a life and opportunities for her family. Growing up Khalil wanted to be a musician and followed in his father's footsteps as tour manager for Impending Doom (American band).

Mixed martial arts

At 20 years old and 300 pounds, Rountree started watching The Ultimate Fighter and saw his brother Donavon Frelow fight, so decided to take up martial arts. He was ready for “a six pack abs and hot girlfriend.”[2] What started as a weight-loss plan eventually unveiled his talent and skill, which turned the head of veteran Anderson Silva, who took Rountree under his wing to train at Black House (MMA) in Los Angeles. There, he demonstrated his brutal force with his striking, and developed his muay thai skill set.

Amateur career

Rountree made his MMA debut in March 2011 with Tuff-N-Uff against Travis Jelmyer resulting with a TKO 21 seconds into the first round.[3]

He went on to face Niels Berlemann 3 months later on June 4 in King of the Cage - Future Legends 2, where Rountree got his first knockout in 16 seconds in the first round.

On January 20, 2012, he won his third fight in a row in less than a minute in the first round, as he took on Giovani Zavala and won by TKO at RFA Beauties and Beasts.[4]

Rountree faced Prentice Williams on October 11, 2012 in Tuff-N-Uff's Knock Out Cancer 2 event. The fight went the full distance 3 rounds, and he won by decision.[5]

Rountree scored his first submission against Lee Cordova at the Tuff-N-Uff Festibrawl 6 on May 26, 2013 49 seconds into the first round.[6]

His last amateur fight was a win by knockout in the first round against Dylan Jahrling on July 5, 2014 at the Tuff-N-Uff Future Stars of MMA.[7]

Professional career

On June 6, 2014, Rountree made his professional debut with Resurrection Fighting Alliance (RFA) 15 and took on Livingston Lukow, which he won by decision after 3 rounds.[8]

In RFA 21, he had a [knockout] in the first round against Blake Troop.[9]

Rountree faced Cameron Olson on April 10, 2015 at RFA 25, which he won by unanimous decision.[10]

On December 11, 2015, Rountree had a first round body kick knockout against Justin Polendey in RFA 33.[11]

The Ultimate Fighter

Rountree advanced his way into the 23rd season of The Ultimate Fighter by delivering a fierce knockout in the 2nd round to Muhammed Dereese.[12] He is currently on the red team being coached by UFC Women's Strawweight Champion, Joanna Jędrzejczyk.[13] Rountree lost his first fight on the show by submission against friend and training partner, Cory Hendricks.[14]

Despite this loss, Rountree pulled off a memorable win against Cory in a doughtnut eating competition in episode 3, where the loser agreed to wear makeup and clothing applied by the ladies in the house.[15]

On episode 10, Cory pulled out of the competition due to an injury, at which point Dana White brought back Rountree as a replacement,[16] where he will fight for a spot in the TUF Finale which will be held on July 8, 2016 at the MGM Grand during International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

Other work

Rountree appeared in the March/April 2016 edition international fight, of MMA Uncaged.[17]

After receiving an overwhelming interest from fans about his weight loss journey, Rountree created "Khalil's Fit Club". His goal is to create a community of like minded individuals, who are striving to create a healthier life and support one another in their journey. He inspires others by offering simple diet and exercise tips that they can easily into their own lives, as well as addressing specific questions submitted by members.

His aspirations don’t stop there. Inspiring others plays a huge part in Khalil’s life, and wants nothing more than to make a lasting legacy in this world, encouraging others to pursue their dreams full force. He is a leader at Choice Center Leadership University in Las Vegas, and has been involved with the organizations for several years.

Personal life

When he’s not fighting or inspiring the world, he can be found pushing the limits with extreme sports, creating art and music, being silly and spending time with his faithful yellow Labrador, Bruce.
