Vincent Janssen (born 15 June 1994, in Heesch) is a Dutch professional footballer who currently plays as a striker for AZ in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Club career

Janssen formerly played in NEC and Feyenoord youth teams, winning the U19s national title with Feyenoord in 2013.[1]

After being released by Feyenoord, he joined Eerste Divisie team Almere City in 2013.[2][3] After netting 10 goals in the 2013–2014 season he reached 19 goals the following season.[4] Overall, he scored 32 goals in 74 appearances in all competitions for Almere.[3]

After two seasons with Almere, he moved to Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar.[5] In his first season there, he did not score in his first eight matches for the club but went on to score 20 league goals in the second half of the season—the first player to achieve this feat in 52 years—,[3] and became the top scorer of the Eredivisie with a total of 27 goals. This also made him the youngest player to score more than 25 goals in an Eredivisie season since Ronaldo in the 1994–1995 season.[6][7] He was awarded the 2016 Johan Cruyff Trophy, the Dutch "Talent of the Year" award.[7][8]

International career

Janssen received his first call up to the senior Netherlands team in March 2016 for friendlies against France and England.[9] He played a pivotal role in his first international start, a 1–2 win against England on 29 March 2016, scoring his first senior international goal, and providing an assist.[10]

3 4 June 2016 Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Vienna, Austria 5  Austria 0–1 0–2 Friendly

Style of play

A two-footed player,[7][12] Janssen is credited with good finishing, movement and pace.[3][12][13] Due to his strength,[3][7][12] he has "exceptional" hold-up play[3] and can bring teammates into play.[7] A good passer of the ball,[3][12][13] he can set up goal-scoring opportunities for teammates.[14] He is also praised for his work ethic.[3][12] Janssen's style of play has invited comparisons with Ruud van Nistelrooy.[3][4]

His weaknesses are shots from outside the penalty box, the timing of his movement and ball control.[12]

Personal life

Janssen is the son of Annemarie Verstappen, a former world champion swimmer and Dutch Sportswoman of the year.[15]
