Puttana Venkataramana Raju was posted as ARP Special Engineer to develop Madras Airport from 1942-44 in time for the requirements of the Defence of India during World War II, he completed the project in time and he was promoted to the position of Superintending Engineer in March 1944, he was then awarded the Rao Bahadur by the Government of India in recognition of his service, conferred the Fellowship by the Institution of Engineers (India) and felicitated by the Somavamsha Arya Kshatriya Sangha Bengaluru. Madras Airport remained a military aiport until 1952 when it was handed over for civilian use. He was a Member of the International Association for Hydraulic Research and also of The Indian Roads Congress. He represented India at International Roads Congress at Hague (1938); He represented the Madras Govt. as their official delegate to Indian Roads Congress, Bombay (1939), Madras (1945), Jaipur (1946) and Trivandrum (1947). He was appointed by the Indian Roads Congress to the List of Committees and Sub-committees set up by the 30th Council meeting in 1947 and also by the 31st Council meeting at Roorkee on the 13th APRIL, 1948 for the Design of Rigid Pavements: members included: Mr. C.W. Nazareth Mr. G.M. Khan, Rao Bahadur P.V. Raju Mr. K.M. Kantawala Mr. B.N. Shenoy . Mr. L.T. Aminbhavi. Rao Bahadur Puttana Venkatramana Raju (ISE) BE(Hons), FIE(I). (1894-1975) was one among the Engineers listed in Eminent Indians[1] between 1900-1980 who was honoured by the Government of India with the Rao Bahadur award [2] [3] for contributions to the fields of Civil & Hydraulics Engineering and the development of Engineering Education.

Education

He was a good student throughout his school years and was admitted into The College of Engineering Guindy, Madras (initially located at Chepauk campus). He was awarded the Madras University Gold Medal in the Civil Engineering discipline where he completed his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree, he qualified for the Indian Service of Engineers [4] (a covenanted service under the direct control of the Secretary of State – Govt. of India) and joined the ISE at PWD Madras.

Later Years and his contribution to the development of Engineering Education

After retiring from the ISE, he took over as the Chief Engineer - Simpsons Group and concurrent with his term there he gave lectures in Civil Engineering continuing from the earlier 1939-40 series under the Madras University and Maharaja of Travancore-Curzon Endowment scheme on case studies of Roads in Holland & The reclamation of the Zuyder Zee in Holland. Later he took on the position of Dean of Engineering studies at Annamalai University and he was Chairman, Board of Examiners as well as member of the Academic Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council, at this time he was also an active member of The Association of Principals and Technical Institutions. He was a Grand Council member of the Masonic Lodge of Southern India.

Family

He was born in Madras in 1894. His father Shri B.Puttiah Raju (also spelt as Puttayya) was established in Jewellery and Bullion trading including handling the Mint for the Government of the Madras Presidency. The family anscestral bungalow was located in the Triplicane area of Madras. Puttana Venkataramana Raju had 4 sons and 4 daughters. All of them were educated to graduate levels and a few to Post-graduate levels while obtaining acadamic honours. His sons were Brigadier Venkataramana Krishna Raju(Indian Army) BE, Venkataramana Sreenivasa Raju. BA, Venkataramana Ramachandra Raju MA(Ranked Tennis player in Madras and later turned professional in USA) and Commander Venkataramana Narayan Raju(Indian Navy-Paschim Star, Poorvi Star and Sangram Medal) BE, MIEE(USA), FIE(I).
