Reference number 1 is a UK government document and I have done it wrong. Please fix. Cheers — Preceding unsigned comment added by Srbernadette (talk • contribs) 00:13, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
2 things please 1) Please help with the correct citation format for the government document (citation number 1) as outlined in the above article.
2) Please help me add the names of both of James' parents in the "box". I have tried but cannot do it. Please help Thanks so much Srbernadette (talk) 02:14, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Insertion and placement of an uploaded photo into a draft article
How do I insert an uploaded photo and uploaded caption of this photo into a draft article? JBandJohnK (talk) 01:54, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- @JBandJohnK: See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial for instructions on how to insert an image. The fact that your article is a draft is not relevant unless you are trying to use non-free images. Pppery (talk) 01:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Also please note that on the Lady Nicholas Windsor page, I have placed in BOLD her former name - in the introduction - this might not be correct. Please fix if you need to. Srbernadette (talk) 00:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- SRbernadette, you can go to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section and learn for yourself whether or not it should be in bold. †Dismas†|(talk) 01:36, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

- Having briefly skimmed through both MOS:LEAD and MOS:BLPLEAD, I would be inclined to have all 3 - Lady Nicholas Windsor, her birth name, and the name she was known as at the time of her marriage (as that seems to be her legal name at that point). That said, I'm struggling to find any reliable sources for her birth name (the Cambridge UP sources only show her name when she enrolled and it's possible she shortened her name for convenience or some other reason), nor anything reliable about her father's name change and when that occured. douts (talk) 20:37, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Unified login template
On my user page, I am using Template:User unified login. When I click on my user name in the template, it says that there is no global account info for "Ergo+Sum." However, when I then search for "Ergo Sum" (my correct username), it calls up the correct information. How can I fix this? Thanks in advance. Ergo Sum 04:18, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

How do I re-use citations from a template?
(Asked on the template's talk page, but it's pretty dead.)
Check out the A Moon Shaped Pool page. It has a table of sales certifications, which is cited using the template. But we also mention the certification in the prose, under the "Release" section. It's uncited. I want to re-use the source cited in the certifications table, but can't figure out how to do it. What do I do? Popcornduff (talk) 04:22, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Popcornduff: If you add a "refname=" parameter to the {{Certification Table Entry}} templates in the sales table, you'll be able to re-use those references in the usual way. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:07, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

I've recently designed a new signature but can't apply it. The code of my signature is as such:

Picture Upload Question
Hi,
I would like to insert a picture into the infobox of a draft that I am working on. I was using the File Upload Wizard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:File_Upload_Wizard) when I realized that I am unable to finish the uploading process because of the following error message:
"This is not an actual encyclopedia article! The page Plum Grove Junior High School is not in the main article namespace. Non-free files can only be used in mainspace article pages, not on a user page, talk page, template, etc.
Please upload this file only if it is going to be used in an actual article."
I have tried "Draft:Plum Grove Junior High School" and "Plum Grove Junior High School", but neither work. I realize that it is not in the main article namespace because it is still a draft. Am I doing something wrong while uploading or is it not possible to upload an image for a draft?
Thanks,
nayakm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nayakm (talk • contribs) 19:18, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hello @Nayakm:, it's usually best to wait with the upload of non-free images until the article has been moved to mainspace. Generally non-free images are only allowed in regular mainspace articles (plus a few exceptions). See WP:NFCC, especially #9 for more information. GermanJoe (talk) 19:36, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- OK Thank you, @GermanJoe:

- I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.9 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. “Reception” section best practices
Do we have a set of best practices for the structure of “Reception” sections, for subjects like media properties? I’ve seen articles that discuss the subject’s reception in general terms with citations reused throughout, and I’ve seen articles that devote a paragraph to discussing each source individually, and I was wondering if there’s any preference or style guidelines about this. Or is it down to local consensus? Thanks. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 01:53, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Like most of Wikipedia, it's mostly left to local consensus. Wikipedia has generic advice about writing better articles, and you can see some more guides at User:Tony1/How to improve your writing. However, I'm not aware of any specific guides for reception sections. Sometimes you can find advice in project-specific style guides, such as MOS:FILM and MOS:VG. Discussing a work's reception in general terms often gives the best overview, but it's difficult to do so without synthesis. It takes practice to train yourself out of saying stuff like, "The film received mixed reviews." On any site other than Wikipedia, this would probably be an obvious statement, but here it's forbidden unless explicitly sourced. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 04:10, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Lists of sources from the same author?
When using shortened citations, the sources are given in a list at the end. I seem to remember reading somewhere in the MoS that when we have several works by the same author, Wikipedia prefers to give the name again, rather than ---. For example (MLA author-date): In an academic dissertation, we'd use:
- Bloggs, Joe. 2011. How to Cite. London: Methuen.
- ---. 2016. Citations. London: Penguin.
But I think Wikipedia prefers:
- Bloggs, Joe. 2011. How to Cite. London: Methuen.
- Bloggs, Joe. 2016. Citations. London: Penguin.
Could someone please point me to the MoS section/article that says which is preferable? Many thanks, • DP • {huh?} 03:46, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- The most applicable guideline would be WP:IBID. The problem is that you don't know whether someone else will insert text between your two sources. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 04:22, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for the response, but it doesn't answer my question and it's not there in the section linked to. It's not a quetion about citations, but about the list of sources at the end of the article: should I use ---. or not? Many thanks, • DP • {huh?} 18:56, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- That's what my response was about. WP:IBID advises against the use of abbreviations in citations because you don't know whether the "ibid" will remain where you originally placed it. Similarly, you don't know whether someone will remove one of your sources, sort the list by date, or insert something between your sources. In a PDF document, you don't have to worry about people modifying your list of sources, but it's a real possibility on Wikipedia. Sometimes you have to use your best judgment and interpret the spirit of the guidelines instead of looking for bureaucratic rules. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 20:19, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I see -- I didn't understand that the references to ibid were a comparison. Thanks for that, and yes, of course, in lieu of specific guidance. But I am pretty sure that I have read specific guidance on it somewhere, only it's been a few years since I last edited and can't recall/find where. • DP • {huh?} 20:30, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

- Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Military of India shows the portal doesn't have the pages needed for a selected article/biography/picture feature. The page histories indicate this is an abandoned one-man project from 2009. The portal does not seem suited for links from mainspace so I have removed the link in {{Military of India}}. - Hello, Angela. Thank you for raising this here, and for not going in and editing it yourself. I assume you are talking about HSBC Bank Bermuda (it would have been helpful if you had identified the article). The best way of getting it updated is by starting a new section on the article's Talk page Talk:HSBC Bank Bermuda, requesting the changes you would like to see made. Be as specific as you can (even suggesting the text), and give citations to reliable published sources, preferably sources independent of the bank, for every piece of information you give. Since there is little traffic to that article, it would be worth adding {{edit request}} (with the double curly brackets) to your suggestion: that will bring it to more people's attention. In time a volunteer unconnected with the bank will see your suggestions, and will decide whether and how to apply them to the article, bearing in mind our policies of verifiability and neutral point of view. --ColinFine (talk) 18:48, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Help! I need a file revived!
I need a file that was deleted from Wikipedia after being published. I forgot to save it to my pc documents. I need it for school work. It was called The Double Alternative. This published work is an unmatched alternative to creation. The Big Bang Theory doesn't really compare. Thank you very much.

- Hi *9HSE2* are you the same user as HSO922016 who asked about the same article at User talk:Widr? If so, as that account is blocked, you must not create more accounts, as this is sockpuppetry- instead, go back to your original account and request an unblock. Joseph2302 20:56, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Also, please refrain from using Wikipedia as a host for unrelated stuff, we don't host schoolwork here. Nitpick: Widr, http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html is not copyrighted ({{PD-USGov}} or {{PD-laws}}, either applies) and thus an article copied from there is not eligible for G12. Should offices in an infobox be ranked chronologically or by importance?
Specifically, I'm referring to the article Tony Blair, in which his position as Prime Minister (the most important) is ranked above his position as Special Envoy of the Quartet (the most recent). Does the manual of style say anything about this? Thanks in advance, Specto73 (talk) 09:24, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- I would say that importance should be above. First, because if some decades from know we want to read about Tony Blair, he will be remembered first and foremost as a Prime Minister, not by his current office (unless something really out of the ordinary happens). And second, because that way we don't need to keep rearranging the infobox all the time. Have in mind that "the most recent" is a state that gets outdated in no time. Cambalachero (talk) 02:38, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- If infoboxes should be ordered by importance, then most politicians' infoboxes would have to be re-ordered. e.g George H.W. Bush's role as UN Ambassador ought, on that basis, to be ranked above his role as Liaison to China, despite Bush holding the latter office more recently. Specto73 (talk) 15:29, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Robin returned to acting in 2009. In 2014, she stars in the feature-length documentary, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014). The documentary is directed by Mark Hartley and was produced by Brett Ratner.
I referenced The Lincoln Center's website, https://www.filmlinc.org/films/electric-boogaloo-the-wild-untold-story-of-cannon-films/, however and I did not enter it properly.

- Hello, I am assuming this post is about Robinsons (drink) where the same request has been made a few weeks ago, and left some advice on the article's talkpage Talk:Robinsons (drink). Also, registering a personal single-user account for yourself is optional, but it would make it easier for you to suggest changes and for others to respond and offer advice. User:Akonstantino/Nicholas Jordan - Reviewing a draft to replace a deleted article
I reviewed User:Akonstantino/Nicholas Jordan and declined it for two reasons. First, there was another draft at Draft:Nicholas Jordan. Second, however, it had already been discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nicholas Jordan (2nd nomination) and deleted. The author, User:Akonstantino, now says on my talk page that they coordinated with the author of the other draft, who wants to remove his draft. I see that the other draft has been blanked, and I have tagged it for speedy deletion. However, here is my question. I haven’t seen the deleted version, and so I don’t know that the current draft is better. What should I do? Should I ask an administrator to review the draft and compare it to the deleted draft? I don't want to just guess that the current version is better than the deleted version. Robert McClenon (talk) 13:29, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- It appears that two articles named Nicholas Jordan have been deleted after deletion discussions. The first one is described in the deletion discussion as a non-notable athlete, and the second one as a non-notable businessman. The first one is obviously a different person, because the draft in question is about a businessman. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:37, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Related Question
After the other draft was deleted, I moved the draft in question to Draft:Nicholas Jordan. It then displayed reference errors that had not previously displayed. I was able to fix them, mainly because a slash was outside the ref tag when it should have been /ref. However, why should a draft have reference errors after it is moved that previously didn't display? This is just a complaint; I think that I have fixed it. Naming Conventions
Is it policy that the first names of, say, Germans be anglicised? I'm seeing it a lot, but I can't locate a specific statement in that regard in naming conventions policy. Is there one, or is this happening mistakenly? Engleham (talk) 21:21, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- What you might be looking for is WP:COMMONNAME. †Dismas†|(talk) 00:03, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- Beyond WP:COMMONNAME though... and some not-all-that-famous people don't have enough refs in English sources to have a COMMONNAME: I don't think there is a rule about how to render names. I'm only familiar with Russian articles, but there for instance the Russian "Варвара" is sometimes transliterated as "Varvara" and sometimes translated as "Barbara". Similarly we see "Aleksandr", "Alexander", or "Alexandr" for Алекса́ндр, and so forth.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany may have a rule, but if not then as far as I know you are free to do what you think is best, and what you think a typical English speaker is most likely to be able to recognize and pronounce. Again, all this applies only if there is not a clear WP:COMMONNAME for the individual in English sources. I would not recommend changing existing names in articles, except to make the article internally consistent; letting previous editors' decisions stand, when possible, generally makes for less work all round. Herostratus (talk) 00:41, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks so much @Dismas @Herostratus for your assistance. I've posted on the Village Pump the suggestion that there could be a clarification in policy. [3] You want to contribute there. Engleham (talk) 16:44, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Book Creation
Wikipedia "create books" is a great aid to study a topic. I have some questions about working with the tool.
How can I have more that one book? Divide a large book into smaller books? Add a category to titles. The popup for create a book, offers to delete the current book and start a new one. Is the book really deleted? This is very unclear. If I have a book in process, but wish to switch to another what happens to the book in-process? If a book is saved, how can it be recalled to edit? How can pages be added to a book. Like an introduction, chapter overview. Convert a page's footnotes into a book's endnote? Keep page URL in pdf? Timestamps on versions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Resipso (talk • contribs) 14:56, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Bad title, please help
QUESTION: I have been working on a page FORREC and noticed that I made it with the wrong title rules, aka all capitals. I did that with a previous article too, Funworld Magazine, but thankfully someone switched it for me. I don't know how to fix this and no one has caught it to fix it yet. Please help. - ThemeParkFan1988b (talk) 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- How does the company style itself? Does it use all caps. in its literature etc. As it seems to be a type of acronym and the logo has caps, is it certain that upper-case is incorrect? Eagleash (talk) 16:34, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- They for sure style themselves with all caps, it is all over their website and most of the press about them as FORREC and not Forrec. It isn't really an acronym, more like a Portmanteau it is a merger of two words, "FORREC means For Recreation" according to the hr part of the website, and I have read this detail in articles about them as well. I didn't think it was allowed in the title even if that is the way it is written normally - when I did Funworld Magazine page originally I had made it FUNWORLD Magazine but that got changed and now it is just mentioned in the first line of text that it is stylized in all caps. - You can move the page yourself by clicking on the move link on the page. Pppery (talk) 17:08, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) If you wish, you can move the page yourself by clicking the 'More' tab at the top. & then word the lead to reflect the corporate style. Funworld looked wrong as it mixed upper & lower case. If you leave it as it is another editor may decide to move it at some future date. (Or not). Eagleash (talk) 17:13, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Koga links
Koga is a dab page. I'm trying to disambiguate links to it, but there are four articles (Cyclingteam Jo Piels, List of Mitsubishi–Jartazi rosters, Mitsubishi–Jartazi, and SEG Racing Academy) where I cannot find any instances of the word "koga". Yet all four link to the dab page itself (not to redirects). I have searched the source and looked for content in templates that might have the link. Nothing. Some use is made of Wikidata, and I tried looking over there to see if I could find anything. Since all the articles have to do with European cycling teams, and because there is a Dutch brand of bicycles called KOGA, I thought maybe there was a team member whose former team was sponsored by Koga. I did not finish going through the list; I got fed up and decided to try to get some help. Any ideas? — Gorthian (talk) 21:57, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

"Hide Page Categorization"
Under "Watchlist options" the ability to hide "page categorization" appeared several months ago (or at least, that's when I noticed it). However, checking that box doesn't seem to stop the onslaught of edits such as this. Is there any way to filter out these edits from AWB-folk who don't go full-bot? Alternatively, is there any sort of killfile that I could apply against specific prolific editors that are enamored with such inane changes? Antepenultimate (talk) 05:27, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Antepenultimate: "Hide page categorization" only has effect when you are watching a category page so I guess you are watching the article and not one of the categories. I don't know a way to prevent such edits on your watchlist. Maybe a user script could be made to remove edits with "AWB" in the summary but a script wouldn't know whether the edit is changing a category or other parts of the article. It might make a guess from "recat using AWB" but that summary was probably chosen by this specific editor. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:31, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Adding a new triad in Neurology
Hello, I am Nasser Nadim MD, publisher of a triad in Neurology researches named: 'Mais- Nadim Nasser Triad', in the Journal of Genetic Syndromes & Gene Therapy ISSN: 21577412 at 2014. I hope you will include thi Triad in the list of Neurologic Triads in WIKIPEDIA. Thanks very much Nasser Nadim — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.114.146.227 (talk) 15:05, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, Nasser Nadim. I guess the article you are referring to is List of medical triads and pentads. In general, like anybody else, you could edit it, and if you are not sure how to, you can make a suggestion on its talk page Talk:List of medical triads and pentads. However, since you are talking about a triad named after yourself, you have what we call a Conflict of interest, and you are acting correctly by asking for somebody else to add it; but again, the Talk page would be a better place to ask.
- Having said that, Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information; as a rule, topics are added to it only if they are notable in Wikipedia's special sense; that is, if they are the subject of substantial published material independent of the subject or its associates. In my view that article already contains a lot of material which should be removed, or at least should be removed unless independent sources can be found, and I would not want to encourage adding more unreferenced (or only non-independently referenced) information. --ColinFine (talk) 20:06, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Is there any way to embed an audio or video clip from Commons but only play a section of the file?
Hi
If there is a long audio or video file on Commons (e.g 20 mins) is it possible to embed it on Wikipedia in a way that only plays a short section of the file e.g from 1 minute 30 seconds - 1 minute 35 seconds? I'm thinking about it in a similar way as Template:Annotated_image is able to crop an image within Wikipedia without requiring a new edited version of the file is uploaded to Commons.

Removal of editing restrictions
I have been a microbiologist for 42 years. I have been a Wikipedia editor for a few years, but I have made only one or two edits. I would like to significantly improve various microbiology sites by adding or replacing inferior or erroneous photos or videos. I am unable to do this because there is a requirement that I at first make ten edits elsewhere in Wikipedia. Is there a way that I may have the rule for ten edits removed for me so that I am able to download my photos. Some will be accompanied by small text additions. Thank-you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drhx (talk • contribs) 16:06, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- As you already have 9 edits, it would be far quicker if you made and saved a couple of minor edits to User:Drhx - Arjayay (talk) 16:09, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- As far as I know, Drhx, Wikimedia Commons does not have an autoconfirmation requirement (presumably because it is much less subject to vandalism). You can upload pictures to Commons straight away, and assuming they are licensed appropriately, it is much better to do so, because then they can be used in any Wikimedia project (in particular, other-language Wikipedias). Normally only non-free images should be uploaded to Wikipedia itelf, but if they are your own photos, you are free to license them appropriately. Please see the Upload wizard. --ColinFine (talk) 20:11, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Citing a book review
Dear Wikipedia,
How does one add a citation if it's not the usual citation such as a magazine article, news article or TV show? There is a "citation needed" notation on this page about a book called "Through Their Eyes," by George Steffner:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Citadel,_The_Military_College_of_South_Carolina#In_literature
The citation is needed for the statement "Said by graduates to be the most accurate narrative of the school's freshman experience." How do you properly cite the source when the citations are found in the book's Amazon review section and in comments on Facebook?
Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Don the hamster (talk • contribs) 16:12, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Don the hamster - please don't, because neither the Amazon review section, nor Facebook comments are WP:reliable sources - they are user-edited and could easily be added by the author, or publisher. If it was reported in the The New York Review of Books, or a similar reliable source, that would be fine. - Arjayay (talk) 16:20, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your response. Does that mean that the quote at the end of the book description should be removed, with simply the book description remaining? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Don the hamster (talk • contribs) 16:43, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

- Hello, maintenance templates (or in this case a WP:PROD notice) are not removed automatically. They would be removed by individual editors who are satisfied that the issues have been addressed. In this case, although you have added some sources, they are almost certainly not enough for the 'PROD' to be removed. Wikipedia is not acceptable as a reliable source and the band website is not independent. Can Green Party nominee Robin Laverne Wilson's picture be added to this page? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_election_in_New_York,_2016 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:6B42:1000:F05C:49F4:AB8D:1088 (talk) 19:16, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Do you have a freely licensed photo? If so, we can add it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 19:34, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Automated ping reminder
There's an option in the preferences where, if you have it on, you will get reminded if you try to save an edit without providing a summary. Is there anything similar where, if I'm replying to a post somewhere and didn't ping the user, it prevents me from saving until after it's reminded me to ping? Because I can't remember to do it about a third of the time and I just learned that adding a ping to a message I already added to a page doesn't do anything because of a bug. - @RunnyAmiga: I'm not aware of such an option. However, let me test a fallback. I'm going to respond to you without a ping. Then I am going to add a ping, remove my sig and re-add it. Did you get a ping?--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:37, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Sphilbrick: Sorry this took so long. No, it didn't work. I got no ping. RunnyAmiga (talk) 21:36, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hmm, troubling, because I've tried that and assumed it worked.--S Philbrick(Talk) 21:56, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- @RunnyAmiga: One more test--S Philbrick(Talk) 21:58, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- mw:Manual:Echo#Technical details says: "The diff chunk must be recognised as an addition of new lines of text, not a change to existing lines." The only fairly certain method is to make a new signed paragraph or indented post without changing any existing content on the page. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:08, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
