Melnik is Jewish, and was born in Kassel, West Germany.[2][3] When he competed in the Olympics, he was 5-8 (173 cm) tall, and weighed 152 lbs (69 kg).[1]

He won the Israeli national championship in judo 12 times between 1968 and 1980 in the welterweight (below 70 kilograms) category, and twice in the open division.[3]

Melnik competed for Israel and won a gold medal in judo at the 1969 Maccabiah Games.[4]

He competed for Israel at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal, Québec, at the age of 27 in judo, in the Men's Half-Middleweight category, and came in tied for 19th.[1]

Melnik subsequently coached the Israeli judo team, and opened up a dojo in Petah Tikvah.[5]

He co-authored an April 2006 article in Strength & Conditioning Journal entitled "The Ten-Station Judo Ability Test: A Test of Physical and Skill Components."[6]
