Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Problems with viewing maps on Wikipedia

Hello, The Italian wikipedia article on the city of Zara in Croatia has a map showing the location of the city: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zara#/media/File:Croatia_location_map.svg But the map as I'm able to view it merely shows Croatia, without indicating the location of Zara. This happens to me frequently when trying to view a map which is included in a Wikipedia article about a particular location. I imagine that I need to configure things differently, but have no idea how, and I'll appreciate whatever advice you can offer. Thanks and best regards, JR — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jro571 (talkcontribs) 13:03, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jro571: I see the city as a red dot in the infobox at it:Zara. Do you see it there? It isn't supposed to show when you only view the map. The red dot is a separate image it:File:Red pog.svg displayed on top of the map in the infobox. The same map it:File:Croatia location map.svg is used by many articles about different places in Croatia. If you want to see the red dot in a larger map than normal in the infobox then your only option is to use your browsers zoom function on the infobox. Most browsers use Ctrl++ for larger, Ctrl+- for smaller, Ctrl+0 for normal. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:16, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Problem getting image caption to appear

I uploaded a new photo for the CoreLogic article and wanted to include a descriptive caption, and used the code [[File:CoreLogic_HQ.png|200px|right|CoreLogic's Irvine CA headquarters]] but the caption only appears with a mouseover. What am I doing wrong?Timtempleton (talk) 18:18, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You removed |thumb, and that stops the caption from being displayed. See Wikipedia:Extended image syntax. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:25, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

hi, I'm trying to reference the infobox with Patient UK Eye Problems in Babies however it wont save...--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 22:18, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't look like an edit filter or the spam blacklist to me. What does happen when you try to save? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 22:39, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Are you logged in when you try? What is your attempted code? Place it in <nowiki>...</nowiki> if you cannot save it here. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:40, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
ok, Childhood_blindness you see the infobox, I inserted UK Patient and the link[1], however it does not show on the article?--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 22:49, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
UK Patient is not a valid parameter, see Template:Infobox medical condition. You should have seen a warning message to this effect (in red) on previewing the edit. Eagleash (talk) 00:14, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
your right, however I was able to edit it at wikidata to set Patient UK, it is linked (however to wrong eye problem[3])...its suppose to be [4]--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 00:30, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed at Wikidata in [5]. You cannot control the text displayed on the link in the article, except by using the name parameter but that also controls the infobox heading. (Technically the Wikidata entry could be abused to give the wanted effect but don't try that). Some templates give a warning about unknown parameters when previewing but {{Infobox medical condition}} is not one of them. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:43, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    thank you PrimeHunter--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 00:45, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The "simple" title in bold above the subject's photo box - Christine Marie - is incorrect - should not it read "Princess Michael of Kent"? The rules for this type of thing are clear. Thank you in advance 101.182.30.213 (talk) 00:55, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unless her first name is actually "Princess" no it shouldn't be. --Majora (talk) 01:29, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, I suppose Prince Michael of Kent should not be titled on his page either?-- Elmidae (talk · contribs) 16:59, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Elmidae: That is correct. And I will be changing it as soon as I click save page here. Just like on George V or Elizabeth II honorifics do not belong in the top of the infobox under the "name" parameter as that is not their name. Our guideline on that can be found here: WP:HONORIFIC --Majora (talk) 17:40, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wayne Ray Chavis, I'm assuming that you're talking about List of YouTubers. That list is like most lists on Wikipedia where the people listed there should have an article about themselves before being listed there. I cannot find an article called "Wayne Ray Chavis" or "WayneRayCha". You may be notable enough for an article according to Wikipedia's policies. I don't know. But, if you are, you should not write an article about yourself. Please click through the links that I've provided for fuller explanations about my points. †Dismas†|(talk) 03:10, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Should the word "versus" be capitalized in titles?

I wonder whether the word versus should be capitalized in titles. These two video games – belonging to the same series – have inconsistent titles: Sherlock Holmes versus Arsène Lupin and Sherlock Holmes Versus Jack the Ripper. This source says versus, althought having five characters, should be lowercase.--Carnby (talk) 08:15, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What titles are used by the vendor? Those would seem to be the primary titles. The alternate forms of capitalization should be recognized as redirects. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:45, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
On the covers of both games versus is in small caps: Sherlock Holmes versus Arsène Lupin and Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper. On Frogwares websiste versus is not capitalized.--Carnby (talk) 21:11, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ongoing semi-protection of the Race and intelligence talk page

Wikipedia:Protection Policy#Protection by namespace states that "Talk pages . . . are only semi-protected for a limited duration in the most severe cases of vandalism." I have checked the race and intelligence talk page several times over the past year or two, and it has been protected continuously. I would like to know where to request it be unprotected, as, bar an exceptional coincidence, it is in clear violation of Wikipedia:Protection policy. 110.33.170.108 (talk) 10:53, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The way to appeal the protection of the talk page is to start with the protecting admin and ask them to remove the protection. In this case that would be Doug Weller. You need to explain why you believe protection is no longer is required. The protection was added because of disruptive editing by socks of Mikemikev. Looking at the protection history it was going on for a long time and is probably justified. -- GB fan 11:05, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Checking his user:talk page, that seems that is semi-protected too. What now? 110.33.170.108 (talk) 08:11, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You can ask at WP:RFPP (Request For Partial Protection, which includes asking for protection reduction) or you could create an account and become autoconfirmed (make 10 edits with the account and have it exist for 4 days) after which you would be able to edit semi protected pages like that admin's talk page. File on Commons with the same name as a file on Wikipedia

I accidentally uploaded an image to Commons using the same name as an existing image on Wikipedia. Now, if I try to use the image I uploaded to commons on Wikipedia, it will show the image on Wikipedia that is known under that name. Is there any way to get around this, or do I need to get the file on Commons to be renamed? ~Mable (chat) 13:35, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No, there is no way to use the Commons image. Either it or the file on Wikipedia needs to be renamed. Pppery (talk) 13:45, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Possible to edit text of a bar chart in Wikimedia commons?

I would like to use https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Global_plug-in_annual_sales_2011-2015.png but overwrite the language to use it in a different language Wikipedia. I have no graphics skills or special graphics software but I understand that graphics are normally created in layers. So is there some text layer I can edit and save the whole thing as a different language version of the bar chart?

Or if that is not possible is there a way I can contact the creator (their user page is a red link which says the page has been deleted) or can I ask for a graphics expert to upload it to Wikimedia commons as layers? Chidgk1 (talk) 14:03, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That likely isn't needed, Chidgk1. The Commons link you provide includes a link to the original source document, a Google Sheets found here, and since the license used is the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license, as mentioned you are allowed to remix the work to suit your needs, as long as you apply the same license to your new product. So from a practical standpoint, all you need to do is open the source Google Sheet, save a copy of it so you can edit that copy, and make the language translations via editing the actual data in the sheet. This should automatically make the changes to the graph attached in the sheet since the graph is just reading the data you send it. Then, upload a picture of the new graph to Wikimedia Commons, and license and attribute the original work appropriately. RegistryKey(RegEdit) 14:50, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    • Hi, the article only states that Captive eastern cottontails have lived to at least nine years of age, so 9 may or may not be the record. CrowCaw 23:20, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
According to AnAge (animal aging and longevity database) entry for, Eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus):
In the wild, these animals appear to live up to 5 years. In captivity, they have been reported to live more than 9 years [0001]. One captive specimen lived 8.4 years at Tulsa Zoo [0671]. There are anecdotal reports, which may be true, of one animal living 9.8 years in captivity (Steven Austad, pers. comm.). Other estimates suggest they may live over 10 years, but this is unverified.

    Indenting issues in IPv4

Can someone have a look at IPv4? There was an edit two weeks ago that introduced indenting issues, but I can't figure it out. Putting the {{aligned table on its own line fixes it, but it aligns the tables to the left instead of keeping the subheading margin. Thanks. Isa (talk) 00:43, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Isanae: I have reported it at Template talk:Aligned table#Whitespace stripping. I guess the module implementing the template can be modified to avoid the issue. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:26, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter and Isanae: unfortunately, it's an HTML/server/browser problem, and not so much a problem with any module or template. you can reproduce the same thing using pure html tables.
    Example
    Item 1
This is a table for Item 3
    Item 3

Now we follow with some text ... Frietjes (talk) 13:51, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I added a hack fix here, and a hack fix just about this comment to avoid indenting the rest of the page. Frietjes (talk) 13:56, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That works. Thanks! Isa (talk) 14:35, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Writing and article

I have read all the instructions etc. But I am still at loss as to understand how to enter an article and particularly how to enter a footnote. Basically, you just visit the URL for the article you'd like to create (that doesn't exist yet) and click "Create". Have you tried the Article Wizard yet?
And take a look at Help:Footnotes for more information on how footnotes work. The basic syntax is this:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.<ref>your reference content goes here.</ref>

    == References ==
    {{Reflist}}

Hello, Lawden. I'm sorry you're having some difficulty. It is an unfortunate fact that creating a new article is difficult, and I wish we didn't get so many people that plunge into trying to do so as the first thing they do in Wikipedia.I always recommend that people spend a few weeks improving existing articles first, to get a feel for how Wikipedia works.
I'm not clear exactly what problems you are having. You say that you hav written an article, but the only thing you have done on Wikipedia under this account is to create the user-space draft User:Lawden/Alderman William Ascough JP. This is a good way to proceed, but there's hardly any material in it yet. Have you read Your first article and Referencing for beginners? If you have read these, and you are still having problems, please explain more clearly what the problems are. --ColinFine (talk) 12:52, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User Access Level for viewing a another user's watchlist?

    How to refresh WikiProject page

Hello!! I recently put together the Wikipedia:WikiProject WikiChallenge African Schools, a competition that we're running from January 2017. The box style presentation makes things very easy to read - BUT the information takes ages to pull into another page. In French Wikipedia, there is a button for refreshing the page and pulling new info into the boxes. Here is an example at bottom right - "rafraichir la page": https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Wiki_Loves_Women . Is there one for English Wikipedia? if so, which template I can use. Or at least, what it is called! Thanks so much!! Isla Haddow (talk) 10:00, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Writing partners

Dear editors: I recently moved a draft to mainspace, and it's now Mark Swift. However, Swift appears to do almost all of his writing in partnership with another writer, Damian Shannon. If an article were to be made about Shannon, the only difference would be in the "Early life" section and maybe a "Personal" section if one were to be added. Is it sensible to make one article, "Mark Swift and Damian Shannon", with redirects from the individual names? Or, in the case of biographical articles, does this just mess up the wikidata or cause other problems?—Anne Delong (talk) 11:11, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

<Does not know the subject matter disclaimer> My personal philosophy is to follow the topic as it is framed by the sources. If all sources talk about them as a duo rather than as individuals, I'd probably write the article about the duo. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 11:46, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If there's no independent info on Shannon, you might consider making Damian Shannon a redirect to the page. Rojomoke (talk) 12:17, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

how to use a map within a wikipedia article

hello there, i m new to wikipedia and writing on my first article about a papuan language. i want to add a map of papua new guinea and highlight the area where the language is spoken. i found this free to use map on wikipedia: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Papua_New_Guinea_location_map.svg. and i saw that lots of other people used this map in their article,eg. for an airport and they added where is it, in the map. my question now is, how do i do this? i tried downloading the map, which worked and editing it in paint. but i couldnt save the edits. from what i read about this map it is okay to do this, am i righ here? so basically i want to know how i can add something to this mentioned papua new guinea map. thank you very much already, best wishes, johanna — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohaAu (talkcontribs) 19:53, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The map is in svg format. You should not use paint to edit. Try Inkscape. Ruslik_Zero 20:03, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
JohaAu If you want to mark an area of a specific size and shape, follow the instructions of the user above. If you want to display one or many dots (or some other kind of symbol, cf. the aircraft icon in the airport articles), that mark the locations where the language is spoken, use Template:Location map. Granted, both of these are very technical tasks. Perhaps you should first write your article without the map and then post a request for one here. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 20:13, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Libraian Credentials

I am a librarian for a special collections library and I have access to many primary sources in my field. Any way I can get a credential or something like that on my user page? Stayhomegal (talk) 20:50, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Stayhomegal. You are free to add anything you like to your user page, as long as it is within the guidelines of WP:Userpage. You might find something appropriate in Category:Userboxes. But "credentials" are not relevant to Wikipedia in any way. --ColinFine (talk) 21:38, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Stayhomegal: You might check out Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request. The editors that help out there typically have decent access, but you might have better access than some of the regulars.--S Philbrick(Talk) 23:47, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Getting a template edit to show up

I made a small edit to this template, but I can't seem to get it to show up on the pages the template appears on. I've seen something about purging, and needing to do it on a page in a transclusion, or something like that; I don't really know what I'm doing (as the more clued up among you may be able to tell) and I don't want to press buttons, especially on a template like this, for fear of buggering up a whole bunch of stuff. Could someone help me out? Thanks. —Calisthenis(Talk) 22:52, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What you've heard about is WP:Purge, and it's not something you do to the template itself. What it basically does is instructs the server to recreate the page from its source code. There is a gadget which adds a purge link to the tops of pages, or you could add ?action=purge to the page's URL. -- The Voidwalker Discuss 22:57, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
However, I think I just handled it myself using the forcerecursivelinkupdate method on the template, but you should check to see if the display is working properly everywhere. -- The Voidwalker Discuss 23:01, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's worked; I can see the change on the pages I looked at with this template. Thanks! —Calisthenis(Talk) 00:08, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Writing and article

I have read all the instructions etc. But I am still at loss as to understand how to enter an article and particularly how to enter a footnote. Again I have read all instructions which do not make sense. I have written the article and have all references. I do not know how to make the web page work. I have registered

I have had some responses but they were in a form not easily understood ans seem to involve chat rooms - I don't do chat rooms - except I suppose this is one. Is there an instruction manual, particularly about how to set up connecting footnotes in English, and not just hieroglyphics? August 23

Ref number 3 is all wrong - please fix sorry Srbernadette (talk) 00:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It tells you exactly what to change. Check date in the |accessdate parameter. Here is the link to the section, click. It is an extra space. Please fix it yourself. And while you are there, the publisher parameter is also malformed. --Majora (talk) 00:15, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have failed with 2 attempts to get the dates correctly done. I do not understand why ref. number 3 is still in red. Please help I am so sorrySrbernadette (talk) 00:23, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please see MOS:BADDATE for a chart with examples of bad and good date formats. You need to learn how to fix these things on your own. --Majora (talk) 00:28, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have had success!!! I have now removed the template at the top of eth page. I believe that this page has enough refs. 00:38, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

The first few introductory lines on the page North Melbourne Football Club are in bold - I think this is unnecessary. I have never edited this page. Please let me know what you think. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Srbernadette (talkcontribs)

Fixed it, thanks for pointing this out. Only the article title and eventual synonyms on first mention should usually be bolded (plus a few additional special cases). See the guideline at MOS:BOLD for more information. GermanJoe (talk) 00:31, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 5.2 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.Template:Z25 --Majora (talk) 01:28, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Created page linked to existing one ...

Hey there, folks, I've never run up against this dilemma before, but obviously I did something that I can't understand or find a solution to undo. In attempting to create an article for the 1952 album "Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin" somehow when I finally was ready to "save the page" I was shocked to find that the entire article was now under the title "Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook", which previously existed as its own article for that album. When I attempted to go back and "undo" what I had done, it did not show any of the work as a large plus number contribution in my history or on the article's history page. Can someone take a look and see what could have gone wrong? I've created pages before, but never run up against something like this. Is there a way to simply revert back to the original article for "Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook"and yet create a new article "Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin" at the same time? Thanks for any help in advance. Maineartists (talk) 02:30, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your edit to Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook, and used your new content to create the new article Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin, and have provided attribution to your edit. When creating a new page you need to do the creation and save in there, rather than saving in an edit to the old article. If you want to do further edits to the new article you can of course now do so. --David Biddulph (talk) 05:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A further problem is that you uploaded the image File:PetersonPlaysGershwin.jpg to Commons, which would only be acceptable if the image was free of copyright. I believe that what you should have done is load it to English Wikipedia under a WP:NFCC rationale in a similar manner to File:Oscarpgershwinsongbook.jpg. It needs deleting from Commons as an unintended copyright violation. David Biddulph (talk) 05:18, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Referencing errors on Polianthes tuberosa

Reference help requested. I donʻt understand what the problem is. Thanks, Libsys — Preceding unsigned comment added by Libsys (talkcontribs) 02:41, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The error message says "Check |url= value (help)", and the word "help" is in blue to indicate that it is a wikilink, in this case to Help:CS1 errors#bad url. I corrected the error in this edit in October 2015, in response to the question you asked at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2015 October 31#Referencing errors on Polianthes tuberosa. --David Biddulph (talk) 05:26, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I need help fixing my error

This was the first time I was doing a move myself. I was trying to move Draft:New Perry Hotel to mainspace, but I moved it to Wikipedia:New Perry Hotel. I put in a SD on that article and tried the move again, to New Perry Hotel, but it only created a redirect to Wikipedia:New Perry Hotel. How can this be fixed? Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 03:22, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I figured out that I can SD the redirect then do the move properly. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 04:38, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the "warning" at the top of this page - I hope that's OK with the Wikipedia administrators. Thank youSrbernadette (talk) 04:01, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The 'maintenance template' has been restored as the page doesn't have anything like enough refs for an article of that length. The date in the notice is to inform editors how long the issues have existed for. Eagleash (talk) 05:42, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The changes in one of my edits are not the changes I made; how did this happen.

Tigercompanion25 (talk) 04:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)Greetings, Wikipedians! On the article for Kwanza Unit, I merely attempted to remove a stray parenthesis and move a comma to the correct location. Imagine my surprise when I look at the difference page here and find all sorts of edits I didn't make, including edits regarding the substance of the article, which is on a subject with which I'm not even familiar. A subsequent editor promptly reverted some of these changes, and quite rightly. My concern is, how did this happen? Has my account been hacked? Or has there been a technical glitch? These changes are too specific for me to think I did them in error. Also, this hasn't happened on any of my other edits, as far as I can tell. I don't mean to be melodramatic about it, but I'm deeply perturbed to have someone making poor edits and giving the impression that they're mine. Any ideas what happened here? (And of course, if there's something really obvious I'm overlooking, my apologies for making a thing about this). Tigercompanion25 (talk) 04:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tigercompanion25:Appears to me that you accidentally edited an old version of the page, as you didn't so much introduce as reintroduce some issues. A bit of digging revealed the version you edited to likely have been the one by FrescoBot in January 2011. this diff shows no change beyond the fixes you meant to implement, and that's what I get when I compare your edit to FrescoBot's edit, so...you probably checked or otherwise ended up at an old version of the page before clicking edit. Dear Sir/Madam

Could you please answer my inquiry related to my article about a living person? I have added two references which are reliable and contain statements supporting my article's content. However, the warning sign of deleting my article within 7 days if I don't add any reliable references still appears there. I totally have no ideas what's happening and would like to hear your advice.

Here is the URL to my article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lan_Khu%C3%AA

    Thanks a lot in advance.
