Kantar Health is a New York City-based healthcare consulting firm, specializing in consumer insights.[2] It is part of Kantar Group, the research, insight and consulting arm of WPP, one of the largest marketing and communications companies in the world, by revenue. The agency works with pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device and diagnostic companies.

Company History

Founding

Kantar Health was established in 2009, one of four dedicated vertical sector operating units[3] created as part of a restructuring of Kantar Group following the acquisition of TNS in 2008.[4] It combined the TNS Healthcare, Ziment Group, Consumer Health Sciences and MattsonJack Group businesses to create a healthcare research, insight and consulting specialist to sit alongside Kantar Media, Kantar Retail and Kantar Worldpanel. The company was initially called Kantar Healthcare,[5][6] but by September 2009 the name had been dropped in favor of Kantar Health.

Acquisitions

HCI (ACNielsen HCI), a research organization focused on healthcare promotions, moved to Kantar Health in 2010 after acquisition by WPP in 2008.[7]

In 2014 Kantar Health acquired Evidências[8] (Focus Assistência Médica S/S Ltda. and Classe Assistência Médica S/S Ltda.), a healthcare research company based in Brazil. Evidências specializes in “Evidence-based, health management services” and operates in all segments of the Brazilian healthcare market, including health insurers, government bodies, hospitals and providers, and pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers. It was one of three Brazilian agencies acquired by WPP in as many weeks.[9]

In 2015 Kantar Health acquired CEEOR,[10] a research and consulting company in the Czech Republic. CEEOR specializes in analytical services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare industries, largely focusing on developing late phase research, such as Phase IV therapeutic use studies.[11] These employ CEEOR's proprietary electronic data capture software, ELQE.

ISO Certification

Kantar Health received ISO 20252 certification in February 2014,[12][13] after starting the process in 2013.[14] It is one of only 17 organizations to have received this quality management system certification from CIRQ Council of American Survey Research Organizations.[15]

Inclusion of countries in NHWS
Year Countries
1998 USA[16]
2000 France, Germany, UK[17]
2005 Italy, Spain[citation needed]
2008 Japan[18]
2009 China[19]
2011 Brazil[20]
2012 Russia[21]

The NHWS is the largest international self-reported patient database in the healthcare industry.[citation needed] It covers more than 150 therapeutic conditions in the United States, EU5[22] (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom), Japan, Brazil, China and Russia. The survey comprises many self-report studies, which produce patient-reported outcomes. These include details about: the epidemiology of the condition, patient diagnosis and treatment choices, patient compliance, satisfaction and attitudes and approaches to healthcare, and utilization of healthcare resources.

The survey was originally a product of Consumer Health Sciences and contains data going back to 1998 from the U.S. market.[16] The NHWS became a property of Kantar Group when CHS was moved to Ziment Group, after parent group WPP acquired parts of Grey Global Group in 2005.[23] Additional countries have been surveyed over the following years, with a particular focus on the pharmerging, or emerging pharmaceutical market, economies since 2009.

CancerMPact

CancerMPact is an online oncology data resource, designed to aid decision making in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. It is made up of three modules: Treatment Practices and Evolution, Patient Metrics and Monthly Drugs and Regimens.

The database was originally a MattsonJack Group product, launched in 2006 under the name Cancer!MPact. The "Monthly Drugs and Regimens" module was launched in 2010 with ImpactRx[24].

Epi Database

Epi Database is an online epidemiology database that covers more than 190 indications in major healthcare markets around the world. The data set contains the following attributes: country, indication, year, gender, race and age. It is used by 16 of the top 20 global pharmaceutical companies, as defined by Pharmaceutical Executive magazine in 2010.[25] It is primarily used to find market potential for new drugs, make go/no go decisions, analyze licensing opportunities, and conduct drug discovery prioritization.

The database was originally launched as a MattsonJack Group product and became a Kantar Health property after the restructuring. Initially the database covered the G7 countries. The BRIC countries were added to the coverage in 2008, but under the separate Epi Database BRIC name,[26] and in 2010 Epi Database EM was launched to cover the emerging markets of Mexico and Turkey.[27] The distinction between these databases no longer exists, and all data are now included in Epi Database.

mHealth

The mHealth sector has become a significant focus, resulting in three notable projects related to mobile apps. The first was in 2012, working with Sudler & Hennessey, Hill+Knowlton Strategies and In Vivo Communications on a public health campaign in Australia. Titled "Know Your Own Skin", it consisted of an award-winning iOS app and companion website to help users track the progression of sunburn and related damage to their skin over time.

The official Kantar Health app was launched in February 2016 on the Apple App Store[28] and Google Play[29] distribution platforms. It uses surveys, captured media such as photographs and biometric data to gain insights into the patient experience of participants. The app was developed with Lumi Technologies on the proprietary Lumi Says platform and won an award for the "Best Use of Mobile Technology".[30]

In 2016 consumer electronics company Withings partnered with Kantar Health to survey and collect data from Health Mate App users. A pilot study conducted over four months investigated the short-term health effects of attempting smoking cessation.[31]
