Simpsonwave (stylized SIMPSONWAVE)[1] is a genre of videos where clips of the American animated sitcom The Simpsons are filtered with tinted, VHS-like effects and played over psychedelic vaporwave or chillwave tracks. The term 'Simpsonwave' was coined by Youtube user Lucien Hughes.[citation needed] Originating from internet meme mashup cultures like Soundclown, the genre grew popular on services such as Vine and YouTube in early 2016, and was very well-received by publications.

Origins and analysis

Simpsonwave's origins are traced to internet meme mashup cultures like Soundclown.[1] It is appropriate that vaporwave, a musical style using samples of old pop music to parody music well known in popular culture overall, is used as audio for visual clips from The Simpsons, a television series that also mocked American pop culture, Joe Blevins of The A.V. Club wrote.[2] The clips are often filtered purple tint and glitchy VHS-esque distortion (heavy chromatic aberration can be used as well), giving the videos a hallucinatory and "transportive" feel.[2] Kevin Lozano, writing for Pitchfork Media, wrote that "Those early seasons of The Simpsons are reeking with ‘90s nostalgia and flashes of surrealism, while vaporwave accesses something deeper in that energy, tapping into a sort of dreamy ennui."[3]

History

The first Simpsonwave video was created and uploaded to Vine by a user named Spicster, using footage from the episode "Bart on the Road" and the track "Resonance" by Floridian chillwave producer HOME.[1][4] As of June 2, 2016, the vine has garnered 22.5 million loops.[1] YouTube user Hothi then created a video, titled "BART ON THE ROAD", with the seven-second visual looped and the entire song playing; it has garnered more than 400,000 views, also as of June 2016.[5]

While homesick from school one day, coiner of the term "Simpsonwave", Lucien Hughes,[3][6][7][8] saw a few mashups of Simpsons clips with vaporwave tracks by a person under the YouTube username midge, which was also posted on a Simpsons internet meme Facebook group titled "Simpsons Shitposting", one of the factors that contributed to the genre's publicity.[6] midge's mashups as well as "BART ON THE ROAD" influenced Hughes to start making Simpsonwave videos of his own therefore making content he labeled under "Simpson Wave" starting in February 2016.[5][6] The first few of Hughes' videos were made as a joke for "shitposting groups" like "Simpsons Shitposting," but with his later videos, he decided to remove the original context of the Simpsons footage he used and giving them different stories to present.[6] By June 2016, his most popular video had more than a million views on Youtube.[5]

Critical reception

Simpsonwave garnered acclaim by journalists when it first received press coverage in June 2016 due to a Twitter post by Rough Trade NYC.[9] The genre was headlined by The Verge as "the chill summer soundtrack you didn't know you needed," writing that it uses a style music appropriate for hot-temperature days of the season while still going beyond personal preference of what makes summer music and also having a certain charm that appeals to a wide audience: "there is something so beautiful and perfect (and maybe unintentionally poignant?) about the way The Simpsons matches up with this music."[10] A writer for Vice Media's electronic music channel Thump called the visual part of the videos to be "pretty interesting in a nostalgic, soothing way—almost like background music for deep thinking."[1] Blevins called the videos "oddly soothing and even beautiful," while Miles Klee of The Daily Dot noted their "fluid editing": "We always knew The Simpsons was the greatest TV show of all time, but in its countless multitudes, it keeps on surprising us."[11] A headline for an article published in Fact magazine was, "We’ve discovered Simpsonwave and now we don’t need any more new genres."[12] On the week on June 5, 2016, the genre was one of THUMP's "11 Favorite Things That Happened This Week."[13] It went on to be declared 'dead' in a YouTube video created by Influential Simsponwave creator Lucien Hughes, Vaporwave Producer Vektroid and music producer FrankJavCee[14] due to its large public reception from News Network Vice and many popular YouTube channels, Notably that of creator Lucien Hughes, whose video SUNDAY SCHOOL received more YouTube views than the respective video of the track played under it.
