Kappa Alpha Theta
The Kappa Alpha Theta page in Wikipedia says it is the 1st sorority and was founded in 1870 with its 2nd chapter also created in 1870.
The Pi Beta Phi page in Wikipedia says it was founded in 1867 and its 2nd chapter was founded in 1869. That clearly makes Pi Beta Phi the 1st sorority and the Kappa Alpha Theta page is wrong according to both Pi Beta Phi AND Wikipedia.
Pi Beta Phi says they have done all they know to do to get Wikipedia to correct its records so I'll try on their behalf.68.45.26.74 (talk) 18:20, 5 December 2016 (UTC)Ronald KovenerReferences are from Wikipedia as state above.

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
• For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
• Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
• If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
• Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
• For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
• New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Referencing errors on Liquid smoke

Reference help requested. On the Liquid smoke page, your edit caused an unsupported parameter error (help). (Fix | Ask for help) My references are 2-6, 1and7 existed. Can you see where this problem is? I can't pinpoint the problem. Please fix if you can or direct me. ThanksGsmoke (talk) 01:19, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Gsmoke (talk) 01:19, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The only ref error showing was to No.5 where an unknown parameter (page number=) (should be page=) caused the red error message. I'm not certain that cite book is the correct template for the source but that apart the refs seem OK. (I did a couple of minor tweaks). Eagleash (talk) 01:43, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Personality cult surrounding Jimbo Wales

Please do not block me, or delete this question. I am not a troll. I am just asking a question. Why is it that the slightest criticism of Jimbo Wales is immediately shut down on Wikipedia? I have witnessed other people delete questions on his talk page, and I have been dissent against Jimbo clamped down with force.

Secondly, if I was to create an article entitled Criticism of Jimbo Wales, just like Criticism of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Criticism of Mother Teresa, Criticism of Akira Kurosawa or Criticism of Osama bin Laden, would this be immediately deleted even if it was a great article that met guidelines? --Wintereichengaarden (talk) 07:33, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Most reverted comments at Jimbo's talk page are from banned users or trolls. There is plenty of regular criticism there. The essay Wikipedia:Criticism provides some guidelines about criticism articles. In general they are avoided for living people, and only used when criticism in the existing article has grown too large. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:45, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
We have an article on Criticism of Wikipedia that's still standing. Anecdotal, but I've had almost the opposite experience (particularly recently): indirect appeals to Jimbo are usually inexperienced editors who think his name is a magic word that will get them their way. Not bashing the man, just noting that the cultists I've seen usually aren't productive regulars. Ian.thomson (talk) 08:51, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. Any ignoring is because of repetitiveness. Any deletion is due to banned trolls. Besides, criticism is easy, doing something yourself is hard.. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 09:36, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Classwork

I am Mr. Roger Gordons, a teacher at Geraldine High School, New Zealand. I have assigned my Computer Science class of 40 pupils some work that involves experimental editing of Wikipedia, so your website may receive significant disruption over the next few hours, but do not be alarmed, it is in good faith. Regards. --Mr Gordons (talk) 07:48, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Prevent speedy deletion

Hello. This image is on RfC but it automatically gets tag for deletion per WP:CSD#F5 by the bot, because the image was previously in an article but now it's used in talk page for consensus. What should be done to prevent deletion until agreement is reached. CerberaOdollam (talk) 07:53, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@CerberaOdollam: If the discussion concludes that the image is suitable for the article, post at WP:REFUND so that an admin can undelete it for you. In the meantime I suggest that you add an external link to the beginning of the RFC so that contributors there can view the off-wiki image once the on-wiki copy has been deleted. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:17, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Persons picture

I have uploaded about a week ago on "wikimedia common" a picture I own the copyright and I'd like to know when I can put up that picture in the editor to update an old outdated photo already in place . page is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_Persons_(band) Thanks, Arc — Preceding unsigned comment added by Archangore11 (talkcontribs) 09:11, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Archangore11: The picture has been deleted from Commons. See User talk:Archangore11 and C:User talk:Archangore11 for messages on the deletion. —teb728 t c 09:25, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion question

If, a few days ago, I placed a proposed deletion on a page, notified the user, they deleted the notice from their talk page [that's fine, they called it "needless blah"]. but then they delete the notice from the actual article. What happens now? I would assume that's not allowed - because it's supposed to be discussed? --Jennica / talk 12:42, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The prod tag links to Wikipedia:Proposed deletion, so you ought to have read that page. The article's creator is allowed to remove the prod tag, and you were violating the process by adding it again. If you still believe that the article ought to be deleted, your next step would be Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:55, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Trisha Greenhalgh

Hi I'm new to wikipedia, have been asked to edit the page about me (Trisha Greenhalgh) so tried to do that and got told I wasn't allowed to because I didn't have permission. I really don't understand all the instructions. Please tell me how I can edit my own page. TrishaGreenhalgh, you can sign your comments automatically using four tildes ~~~~. In general you should not edit articles about yourself, see WP:Autobiography. Help with school page

I ran across Hinchingbrooke School which is experiencing a lot of silly vandalism and reversion. I am learning to use Stiki, so I clicked vandalism for the latest problem, planning to go to the page and make further corrections. Looking at the page history, there is a lot of nonsense going on today. I could roll it back to November 19, but it will just get hit again. Is it possible to temporarily block it until the immaturity dies down? Leschnei (talk) 13:22, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@CBallard: In Wikipedia, blue text usually means a link. See Help:Link#Wikilinks for how to make links to other Wikipedia pages. The text will automatically be blue if the linked page exists. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:52, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I dispute the contents of the entry on Dolores Cross. I am her son and you have many facts wrong. Morris Brown had been obtaining money illegally (based on ineligible students) from the federal government for many years prior to my mother's term as President. When she tried to put a stop to the practice, the college's financial officer drew down the money then asked for protection under the whistle blower act.Just because the media says so does not make it right. Please contact me for clarification — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:441:4101:8050:3C5B:1CEE:E862:9C2E (talk) 17:21, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be better for this to be discussed on Talk:Dolores Cross. —MRD2014 (talkcontribs) 18:34, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are other sources than the media that can be used as references to an article, but we need some kind of reliable source. Please see Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth. RJFJR (talk) 21:33, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The article has been partially cleaned up some time ago to provide a more neutral point of view, but if you can find a published source for your claim about the financial officer, we will be able to correct the impression that Ms Cross was jointly responsible. Would you like to move this whole discussion to the article talk page as MRD2014 suggests? This is a very public forum. Dbfirs 23:39, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what your question is? The logo has been fixed and there don't seem to be any ref errors currently showing. In the meantime, the article has been nominated for deletion here. Eagleash (talk) 21:47, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To see what the question was, follow the link in the section heading, which goes to Special:Diff/752547221.
That version has an error message which includes a link to the relevant help page.
As far as the logo is concerned, the licensing information, if present, appears to be malformatted.
There have been numerous subsequent edits, but nothing to show that the subject is notable under Wikipedia's definition. --David Biddulph (talk) 02:00, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I did and saw the error message which subsequently disappeared. That's why I said 'currently'. The error related to a ref name in the infobox which had not been defined. There was no indication on the page, at that time, of what the editor intended to tie the ref name to. I did not though, look at the licensing as it not something I know a great deal about really. If you mean the table of contents (ToC) seen near the top of many articles, this will appear when you create level 2 headings. I.e. coded thus ==History== etc. Note your own heading has been added to the ToC for this page. Eagleash (talk) 23:45, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oirios, I made an edit to your draft article which is what I think you were looking for. †dismas†|(talk) 00:31, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

References

I am trying to replace bare references with fully specified references. A lot of them are magazine articles, eg in Newsweek or whatever. When I am in edit mode and click to insert a Cite, it offers me four templates, for News, Journal, etc. I am not offered Magazine Template, even though I have the impression that that does exist. Can you advise me how I can get that? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CognitivePsychPhD2014 (talkcontribs) 23:59, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it does exist; it has replaced Journal for non academic publications. The visual editor (edit mode) may not have caught up as yet. You might have to do them the 'long way'. Have you tried adding the template within the Vis Ed editing window. If you type 2 curly brackets it should ask you 'add template?' I.e. click on the ref No. and then 'edit' and go from there...some experimentation might be necessary. Eagleash (talk) 00:21, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@CognitivePsychPhD2014: See Template:Cite magazine for the source editor. That is the editor you use now. The above reply refers to Wikipedia:VisualEditor. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:30, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

December 3

I'm not sure how to phrase this question, but is there a policy on using subjective words to describe an organization when refering to it in another article. For example, would it be appropriate to say "he is a reporter for conservative Fox News..." or "he writes for the liberal website Huffington Post", rather than simply saying "he is a reporter for Fox News...", etc.? (Even if the linked article finds it appropriate to characterize the organization thusly.) 108.16.195.202 (talk) 02:09, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Avoid that. See WP:NPOV and Loaded language. RudolfRed (talk) 02:21, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reversing a redirect

Uchtred of Galloway is a redirect to Uhtred of Galloway. But the subject's name, throughout the article and in the majority of external sources that I have been able to find, is spelled Uchtred. Is it possible for an ordinary autoconfirmed user to make the redirection go the other way? Maproom (talk) 09:24, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I note the admin who originally named the page also changed its name from Uchtred to Uhtred, which suggests either a mistake or some reconsideration. A few sources use Uhtred. However it doesn't look to controversial - because the redirect contains more than one revision, if you are still sure it wants to be moved, you will be able to request the redirect's deletion using the db-move template. -- zzuuzz (talk) 09:48, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Black light revenue

Is the term created by Mike Morrison which describes the identification of revenue which lies congested and unseen in the revenue systems of companies -

This is largely the outcome of the BIG DATA era - which began in 2006 the start of the infotronics era 2006 -

This term was created by Mike Morrison prior to becoming CMO of RPMG / RPMT - in 2016 . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikiwikimorgy (talkcontribs) 10:17, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What is your question about editing Wikipedia, Mikiwikimorgy? If you're thinking about writing an article, please see your first article. If you want to request an article, you can do so at Requested articles (though there is a huge backlog). But if the term was only created in 2016, it is unlikely (though not impossible) that it has already been written about enough to ground an article. See notability. --ColinFine (talk) 15:49, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing. If your business meets our notability guidelines, then someone without a conflict of interest will write the article. Wikipedia is not here for you to advertise on and the community owns all pages here (not businesses). For there to be an article about your company, there needs to be multiple professionally published mainstream academic or journalistic sources that are specifically about your business but NOT affiliated with it, and someone who does not work for or with you or your company would have to write the article based on those sources. Problems concern American and British pronunication differences

I was reading the page the other day, and I happened to notice a slight piece of evidence questionable and unsourced. I first created a section on the talk page request the change to occur. I got one response in favor and one against. So, I made the removal. Some one did revert back to the original text. This is not my problem, for I know well that they reserve the right to do such. However, on the talk page this man said, and I quote, "American English is rubbish because they don't accept alternate British pronunciations & they butcher pronunciations of English & foreign words, i.e. entertainment from popular television & music." Naturally, as an American, I am offended by this. Furthermore, I kept telling this man to write his source in the article, but he only will insert the source on the talk page. No matter how much I find his sources does not accurately support his claim, he will stick to it. I am not willing to fight this battle anymore. Could someone address to him that such behavior is inappropriate for a talk page? If not, then oh well. Thank you.74.102.216.186 (talk) 00:35, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The article being disucssed here is American and British English pronunciation differences. --Gronk Oz (talk) 01:58, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The editor uses an IPv6 address that geolocates to IT&T in Chicago, and he makes very similar edits to those of a previous contributor who also removes signbot's autosignatures and also uses slovar-vocab.com for references. I won't make any accusations, or even name the registered user, of course, since these facts might just be coincidences. As a British editor, I, too, found the rant potentially offensive. Dbfirs 22:54, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I made a dozen edits or so on the page. I really did that because of the issue addressed at the top of the page, asking the readers to help improved the page. And this man (I can assume male) accuses me of destroying the page. And he complains that I don't know British English. All of the changes I made were based off the American pronunciation of the listed words. The pronunciation given as British was a legitimate American pronunciation, or it was an accent difference based off different pronunciation of vowel classes. The page specifically addressed that such cases were not to be mentioned on that section. For the administration, is there anything that can be done?74.102.216.186 (talk) 03:37, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is this a good use of the edit filter?

Someone (or a group) on Pjanoo keeps adding the entry that a YouTube user named Zeb89 (sometimes called the #1 gaming channel in Italy) uses the song in his videos. It's been ongoing since July and it's a different user each time (sometimes an account, sometimes an IP) that adds it back in. I've just added a Pagenotice to the article, but should this keep going, is it a good use of the Edit filter to just block "Zeb89" from being added to articles? hbdragon88 (talk) 07:08, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Hbdragon88: Since this is only one article, semi-protection would be a less expensive option. Edit filters are checked during every edit of every page, and there is a software limit on the number and complexity of the edit filters that can be run. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:35, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bright Eyes (British Band)

About three years ago I added a page on Wikipedea that was based on fact. The band performed extensively in the UK between 1975 & 1982 were on Radio One & made a couple of albums. Yet I find that someone in Australia who had nothing to do with the band I formed calling themselves 'Malicious' has deleted the page. Please do not allow this to happen again. I have made a new entry on 3rd December 2016. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BrightEyesBirmingham (talkcontribs) 10:35, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You've never made any edit—deleted or otherwise—before today, and the Bright Eyes (British band) article never existed before 01:04 this morning. Wikipedia articles need to provide citations to reliable sources to indicate why the topic is notable—we're not a general directory, but only summarise material which has already been published elsewhere. ‑ Iridescent 10:45, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also, there is no User:Malicious so it's really hard to guess what you refer to. Two years ago [1] an IP address mentioned a British band in Bright Eyes but linked to it to an article Bright Eyes (band) about an unrelated American band. The IP has no other edits. If you are indeed "Alan Chez", please read [WP:COI] which explains that a subject is highly discouraged from editing his own WP page. Please bring your comments and requests to the article's talk page here: [2]; but please do not continue to edit the page yourself. Thank you. Maineartists (talk) 17:22, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
or we could help. I've moved the article to Alan Chez. It's debatable whether Al Chez (as commonly used on the subject's website) is more common, but they seem to think (on their website) that their name is Alan Chez, there are sources to support it, CHEZNOVITZ is questionable, and so I've moved it with all necessary redirects. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:43, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Login problems

My ID is Deisenbe.

Firefox on my Windows laptop and Safari on my iPad, which worked fine until a few days ago, and with no hardware or software change on my end, will not let me log in no matter what I do.

I get an error "There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Go back to the previous page, reload that page and then try again." Those instructions do not work.

`If I click on "forgot your password" I get an email with a temporary password, but that gives the same error message.

However with a different browser, Dolphin, and exactly the same user name and password, on the same iPad, I can log in just fine at the same time these programs won't let me.

Anyone got any suggestions? Please post to User talk:Deisenbe. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:58C:C300:34F2:D466:6667:9AC4:92DF (talk) 19:24, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you found it on Twitter, you can't use it. The image is copyrighted. Please do not upload images you find elsewhere on the Internet. If you want you can send an email to the person asking for it to be released to us. For instructions on that please see WP:COPYREQ. --Majora (talk) 23:30, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How to send email to a user that you mentioned in an email

How do I send an email to a user that I mentioned in an edit. Do I just put something like User: before his name, or do I need some special characters? I have received emails like that and it appears they just put User: before my name, surrounded by double square brackets, but I'm just guessing. PS I'm new at this game. Zootsuit1941 (talk) 23:32, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Zootsuit1941: It sounds like you don't actually mean Wikipedia:Emailing users but Wikipedia:Notifications. A signed edit with a wikilink to your user page will usually trigger a notification no matter how the link is made. In this edit I used Zootsuit1941 but I could also have written User:Zootsuit1941. A notification only causes an email if the user has enabled "Email" for "Mention" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:56, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Zootsuit1941: Your test case won't work: linking to your own user page does not trigger a notification. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:23, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Right, but I received the notification. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:44, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: @John of Reading: Thanks to both User:PrimeHunter and User:John of Reading, I am now more knowledgeable than I was a few days ago, so who says you can't teach an old dog (75 years) new tricks? I'm assuming you won't get double notifications from this since I did it twice for both names, the two different ways mentioned by Prime Hunter earlier.

Moving A wikipedia page

Hey! So I need to move a page from my sandbox to an actual page, how do I go about doing that? Rebekah — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rmccann15 (talkcontribs) 08:32, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rmccann15, is this about User:Rmccann15/sandbox? If it is, there would be a problem with moving it, as Wikipedia already has an article on Pinus virginiana. Also, parts of your sandbox version have been copied, without attribution, from that article, technically a violation of copyright. If you could let people here understand what you're trying to do, I'm sure this can be sorted out. Maproom (talk) 08:48, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Rmccann15 is a student on a course. Another student on the same course, EnsleyHydroSib, is working on a draft article at User:Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides. I don't blame the students, who are doing good work; they're just doing it the wrong way. Someone needs to have a word with whoever is in charge of this course. Maproom (talk) 09:02, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see that EnsleyHydroSib moved their sandbox to the non-existent username (probably intending to move it to a userspace draft). I moved it to a userspace draft. —teb728 t c 10:17, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to edit this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincenzo_Botta

And I received the error message: Missing or empty |title= (help)

What type of page protection?

I was going to request protection for Ashwath, a disambiguation page, because it seems to be suffering repeated vandalism. Should I request semi-protection or pending changes? Thanks, Leschnei (talk) 15:52, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the level of vandalism is high enough to request any protection at all. However, for that type of vandalism, if there were more of it, I would go with semi-protection. As a disambiguation page it shouldn't need to be altered frequently enough to make pending changes worthwhile, and all the vandalism so far is unregistered people, so semi-protection should be adequate. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:56, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. I've noticed that this type of vandalism seems to come in waves on any particular page. It caught my eye because some of the edits deleted the legitimate content. Leschnei (talk)

Copyvio on talk page

Template:Copyvio-revdel says "This template is intended to request Revision deletion of portions of an article's history" - I cannot find an equivalent template for talk pages.
Am I reading the instructions too literally? or have I missed a talk page equivalent ? (Talk:Taj Mahal if there is a passing Admin) - Arjayay (talk) 16:21, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Despite using "article" in some places in its documentation the template can be used for any page (the same as RD1 criterion). Ruslik_Zero 16:46, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to determine why the page was deleted, deletion logs missing

Hello! I was working on a page for Mushroom Wars 2 game, when, after a claim on the copyright violation of the image I was using (the image created by the artists of our studio), all the text was deleted as well. I cannot retrieve it in the revision history and I'm missing deletion logs. Could you please advise me on what the reason for deletion is and how can I restore it?

Thank you, Ksenia Shneyveys

P.S. In less than 2 months after its launch, the game has over 1000000 downloads and a lot of reliable sources that can reference the game. It is it is a separate game within a series, as it differs greatly from all the Mushroom Wars games, I believe, it deserves a separate wikipedia page.

Belosnegova (talk) 16:45, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You do not have any deleted contributions. Ruslik_Zero 16:49, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
We have an article on Mushroom Wars, but not yet one on Mushroom Wars 2. Were you editing without being logged on to Wikipedia, or using a different name? It is usually safest to use WP:Articles for creation or your own sandbox when working on an article, but even there, you need to be very careful about copyright. Naming a new BLP

I'm starting an entry for someone named Eva Chen but I'm not sure how best to disambiguate the title from the existing Eva Chen. The Eva Chen for the entry I'm working on has been editor-in-chief of Lucky,[1] beauty director at Teen Vogue,[2] and now is head of fashion partnerships at Instagram.[3] Any thoughts on what an appropriate parenthetical title would be? (I can provide more sources if it'd be helpful.) Thanks much. Innisfree987 (talk) 17:41, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
