The Marathas constituted an extensive and eclectic class of warriors and peasants. Their clan structure may therefore be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists and historians. Several lists and taxonomies of the Maratha clan structure are available. One such version is presented here.

Origin of clan system
Origin of clan system
The main clans and their sub-clans or lines tended to differ from time to time, or by book to book. This was a change over time as some clans lost their glory and kingdom while other clans gained prominence. In olden days political conditions were harsh and chaotic. Name changes also occurred as people tried to shield themselves from military conflicts, religious, political, caste-wise persecution and discrimination, or to hide from a criminal past. Some people chose to go underground, or migrated to a different region and changed their name in the process. Evidence suggests citation needed that people or an entire clan changed their name but did not change their caste and they migrated to new region, or came a under government. It is difficult process to identify and prepare 100% correct clans line. I am aware that some Maratha surnames and clans are missing from this list. Errors and ommissions are unintentional and I can fix that with your help.

This list was established and created by the great sage Vyasa rishi with the help of other rishis such as Vamdev, Shuk etc. The Great Maratha clans are descendents of all 56 (fifty six) Royal houses of India. According to Arya (Hindu) religion In our India or Bharat nation there are 56 sub nations. The Mahabharata war was destructive and left these nations in general disarray. This was the start of the Kaliyuga (sinful terrible age in Hinduism). So in order to keep the religion alive, the rishis linked the Kshytriyas, warriors, and Royal houses in strong bond and created the Maratha Clan System from the 56 Royal houses of India.

Apart from the Marathas, a well defined clan system is also found among the Rajputs, Scots, Germanic Tribes and Iranians. All these groups belong to the Indo-European population. The cognate of clan is Kul or cul, cognate of kshatriya is shah(Iranian), Shah-nav(Maratha), satrap(European). There exist a lot of similarities between the names and social customs of these clans during the ancient timess e.g. Royal Insignia, Worship of the Fig tree, Code of valour and the art of fortification. It seems that before the compilation of theRigveda, these clans scattered in different directinos from their homeland. In general, all these clans have got a history of chivalry and have enriched their respective country's history. It is a matter of research for sociologists as to why even after changing their religions these clans did not change their clan system.

When there was no plough to earth, bad signs were hanging on the tree and eighteen demon dogs were attached to the tree then there was no king to the earth. Gods and Sage’s (rishi ) came together and had a talk that to perform Yadyna ( A Hindu religion fire ritual ) so that from the Yadynya’s holy fire(Homa) astatue will born and he will became the king as so gods and rishi made the future . Then they brought Sandalwood (Chandankashtha ) and Belkashtha ( A kind of tree which God Shankar likes ) and began the Yadyna. In those days horses use to have wings. Horses showed the future and began to say that he who will ride ( sit ) on horse will became the king , so as the divine statue born from the Yadyna’s holy fire sat on the horse and went out of the Yadnya , soon after the God’s and Rishi demolish the Yadyna and went away. As so there was grate outcry ( Aakant). Afterwards Shree Sadashiv (God Shankar ) came and calm down the Sage (rishi) , and brought back the group of Sage(Rishi) and again proceed the Yadyana .All gods made a dog from their sweat dust and kept the dog to protect the Yadyna , the dog made very grate barking. That dog barking was so enormous, grate that from that holy fire like barking (Homa) gave birth to second divine statue, the statue had four hands, in one hand had a plough and in other hand had Musal ( big wooden club), third hand had Dhanushya (bow) and fourth hand had Khadag (big axe) , so like that the statue was born with grate, divine fire(Homa). Nobody could stand, bare his divine light, fire so Shankar with Mantra sprinkled divine water from his pot and had edge around. From that edge grate edge like Darraw Pawar was born, and he stood as so that in his hand he had Khadag (big axe), then after Suva was born. Khandagale was also born in the Khadag (big axe) plough hand. Like that Chandralabh was also born. Lord Shankar made a divine fire round and from it Kawda was born. Chavan made Pawar as priminister and told him that have an arrow to his bow and cut the wings of horse. Pawar obey the order and cut the wings, from it was bleeding. From that bleeding Pawar made his sign and then after the earth had a king. So the earth was ploughed and then lord Shankar sprinkled divine water and end the Yadyna. When the divine water was sprinkled from it Nikam was born. When found Kardam , Kadam was born , Vigal was born where Vigal found , as like this is expansion of divine fire (Homa) born statue.

Historically Marathas clans played a major role in preserving Indian culture and religion .India like China is a civilisation which is almost unbroken. The prime reason no invader was able to wipe out indigeneous Kshatriya clans. As a result the foreign culture could not be imposed save for a few minor pockets which ultimately broke from India , forming new nations. Following are the empires of whose Marathas are either founders or descendants. Please visit following empires' s pages.

* 1) Watch the marathi movie Samana ( Samna ) (1974) - Directed by Jabbar Patel
, Writing credits Vijay Tendulkar and actors
Mohan Agashe .... Maruti Kamble ( AS a Dalit ) ---
Shreeram Lagoo .... Mystic Hobo ( AS a Brahmin) ---
Nilu Phule .... Hindurao Dhonde Patil ( AS A Maratha ) ----
Watch and listen carefully the dialogues . Even the slang and curse have gotta meaning. This movie throw light on an Maratha strongman and Maratha politics. The origin of Bramin caste in Maharashtra and Maratha - Brahmin caste struggle can be found within the movie. How
Hindurao Dhonde Patil pick up the Shreeram Lagoo .... Mystic Hobo from street , gutter and give shelter in his home but afterwards he proved to be a snake. The main two personalities Shreeram Lagoo .... Mystic Hobo ( AS a Brahmin ) ---is a drunckard , looser and sinister man and other is Nilu Phule .... Hindurao Dhonde Patil ( AS A Maratha ) an established politician , businessman and king of his area , but looking for expanding his power and want to get reconised by sclores and intelectuales , have trust on Shreeram Lagoo .... Mystic Hobo ( AS a Brahmin ) --- but is bettryed by him. He has published two books about those days namely Hindustanche Dusare Swatantrayuddha (Second freedom war of India) and Netajinche Sahawasat (In company of Netaji ). After the end of war he traveled on feet the 3500 miles walk from Singapore to Calcutta.During 1947 to 1953 P.N.Oak was press reporter in Delhi new papers The Hindustan Times and The Statesman. During 1953 to 1957 he was head of department in the Indian central Radio and Public Ministry. During 1959 to 1974 he was editor in department of information of American Embassy. He has raised many questions about current ruling history. He has made fundamental changes in writing history and has published many books.
When I Vishal Prakash Dudhane was in college I have met Shree Purshottam Nagesh Oak and talk about his vision. I got blessings from him and I was very happy that at last I am not the only one who is unhappy about current situation in world and Maratha history. I refer all this books to all wikipedian's. As a citizen of Pune city I never read his name news papers or any books and I think that he was cunningly ignored and boycott by intellectuals of India and world. The fundamental work in modern history he has done is enough to give him a place in the history of time itself although not in the world dominated by western civilizations. History will all remember and be thankful to him for his outstanding achievements.

Shivaji and his faithful Maratha comrades

The Marāthās is a collective term referring to an Indo-Aryan group of Hindu, Marathi-speaking castes of warriors and peasants, hailing mostly from the Indian state of Maharashtra. They created the Maratha Empire which covered a major part of India in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The main clans and their sub-clans or lines tended to differ from time to time, and by book to book. Some clans lost their glory and kingdom while others gained prominence.

Past political conditions were harsh and chaotic. Name changes occurred for many reason. People changed their name to shield themselves from military conflicts, or from religious, political, caste-wise persecution and discrimination. Others did so to hide from a criminal past. Some people chose to go underground, or migrated to a different region and changed their name in the process. Evidence suggests [citation needed] that some people or an entire clan changed their name but did not change their caste when they migrated to new region or came a under government. It is difficult process to identify and prepare clans lines that are completely correct and some Maratha surnames and clans are missing from this list.

The list in this article was created by the great sage Vyasa rishi with the help of other rishis such as Vamdev, Shuk and others. They established that the Great Maratha clans are descendents of all 56 Royal houses of India. According to Arya, the Hindu religion in India was divided into 56 sub nations. The Mahabharata war was destructive and left these nations in general disarray. This was the start of the Kaliyuga (sinful terrible age in Hinduism). In order to keep the religion alive, the rishis linked the Kshytriyas, warriors, and Royal houses with a strong bond by creating the Maratha Clan System from the 56 Royal houses of India.

D.B.Kasar has shown similarity of Maratha clans with Germanic, Celtic, Nordic tribes.

Caution

It has been observed that some surnames of Maratha caste are commone , that is other castes of Maharashtra and India also use these surnames. So it has been adviced that from a surname one can not be claimed that he belongs to main Maratha caste. Maratha caste is very ancient and broadbase caste of world and its drope of blood can be found in many caste. The concept of Bhahujan Samaj is related to this truth , but as a matter this can't be discuss publickly and it remained taciturn.

Birth of the certain clans

( From Marathi language translated by Vishal Prakash Dudhane ) Following legend throws some light on origin of certain clans. It is interesting to compare it with the famous Norse Saga Norse saga.

Historic role

Historically Marathas clans played a major role in preserving Indian culture and religion. India, like China, is a civilisation which is almost unbroken as no invader was able to wipe out indigeneous Kshatriya clans. As a result a foreign culture could not be imposed, save for a few minor pockets which ultimately broke from India and formed new nations. The Marathas are either founders or descendants of the following list of empires.
