On 19 December 2016 at about 20:00 local time, a truck ran through a Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin, Germany, killing at least nine people and injuring at least 50 more.[4][5] German police believe that this is likely a terrorist attack.[6] The vehicle involved was a black Scania articulated lorry. The truck drove 50-80 metres, crossing the walkway and destroying booths.[7] Local police indicated that the vehicle came from the direction of Budapester Strasse before finally coming to rest in front of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.[8] The driver was reported to have fled to the zoo.[7]The suspect, believed to be the driver, has been taken into custody.[9][10] The Islamic State claims responsibility.[11]
