The Atlanta Board of Education is the governing body of Atlanta Public Schools. The board has nine members: six are elected by geographical districts and three are elected city-wide. All serve four-year terms.[1]
While the board establishes and approves policies that govern the school system, the day-to-day administration of the school district is the responsibility of the Superintendent, who is appointed by the board.[1] (Current Superintendent Maria Carstarphen was unanimously chosen by the Board of Education in April of 2014.)[2]

Compensation
Board members are paid an annual salary of $19,037 ($20,817 for the chair and $19,928 for the Vice Chair)[3], as per the 2012 recommendation of the City of Atlanta Elected Officials Compensation Commission.[4]
