CSI: NY is an American police procedural television series which premiered on September 22, 2004. The series was the second spinoff from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and was introduced during an episode of CSI: Miami when Horatio Caine journeyed to New York City in pursuit of a murder suspect who fled Miami. It is much bloodier than the Miami version, and was filmed in a hard blue light until Season 2, when CBS President Les Moonves wanted to make the show appear "less cold".
Another crossover (between NY and Miami) was featured on November 7 (CSI: Miami) and November 9, 2005 (CSI: NY), which involved a crashed plane and an escaped serial killer, and included members of both casts.
Like the other two CSI programs, the theme song is by The Who; this time the song is "Baba O'Riley", also (erroneously) known as "Teenage Wasteland".
Cast
Main characters
- Detective 1st Grade Mac Taylor, played by Gary Sinise, is the leader of the CSI team. The death of his wife, Claire, in the 9/11 attacks troubles him to this day, causing chronic insomnia. He served in the USMC, once saying that he had wanted to serve the country more than anything else in the world. He served in Beirut in 1983, which he still has a scar over his heart from. Mac has a close friendship with Stella Bonasera and plays bass guitar at jazz clubs during his off time. This talent was discovered by Lindsay when she discovered the he knew how to hold the bass guitar. In season three, he is revealed to have been dating Dr. Peyton Driscoll, played by Claire Forlani.
- Detective 1st Grade Stella Bonasera, played by Melina Kanakaredes, is absolutely devoted to her job. She is often referred to as the 'Statue of Liberty', due to her strong personality, determination and intelligence. She is a half-Greek, half-Italian orphan, who grew up moving throughout foster homes. She is very close to Mac and constantly worries about his physical and mental well-being. After discovering that her boyfriend Frankie had secretly taped them making love and uploaded the footage to the Internet, she broke off their relationship. She was forced to kill Frankie in self-defense after he stalked her and held her hostage in her own apartment.
- Detective 3rd Grade Danny Messer, played by Carmine Giovinazzo, was born as Daniel Messer. Danny grew up on Staten Island in an "Italian Mafia" family under surveillance (as hinted at in the episode "Tanglewood"), he formed his own set of hybrid ethics, caught between the world of lawbreakers and lawmakers. Mac personally selected Danny for his team, an honor and a responsibility that he attempts to live up to each day. His relationship with Mac is severely tested when Danny goes to Internal Affairs behind Mac's back ("On the Job") and almost loses his job, although he ends up being merely removed from the promotion grid and demoted to CSI second class. He is a very suspicious person; though he gets along well with the rest of the CSI team, Flack is one of the few people he truly confides in. Danny attended college and played minor league baseball until he got into a bar fight and broke his wrist, after which he went to the police academy and graduated first in his class ("The Closer"). Almost a year after the original Tanglewood case, Danny is implicated in a 15 year-old cold case. His older brother Louie, a Tanglewood gang member, is severely beaten by the gang and left in a coma, although he manages to get a taped confession from the real killer which clears Danny of the charge with the help of Mac. Danny also has a budding friendship with crime lab newcomer Lindsay, whom he affectionately calls "Montana".
- Dr. Sheldon Hawkes, played by Hill Harper, formerly a Medical Examiner with the NYC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). He was a child prodigy who graduated college at eighteen, and by 24 he was a fully board-licensed surgeon. After losing two patients, he abandoned surgery in favor of the medical examiner's office. At the start of season 2, Hawkes has moved from the autopsy room out into the field.
- Detective 1st Grade Don Flack, played by Eddie Cahill, Born Donald Flack .Jr, comes from a long line of law enforcement officials. He bridges the gap between old school NYPD and the new generation of CSI. He is a witty homicide detective who has very little patience with the "bad guy", and his techniques are sometimes considered somewhat borderline, though effective. He is good friends with Danny Messer, and is always willing to lend an ear to Danny's problems (as in the episode "On The Job"). During the season 2 finale, Flack was severely injured in a bomb explosion, and is still in a coma heading into season 3.
- Detective 3rd Grade Lindsay Monroe, played by Anna Belknap (season 2 - present), a forensic scientist from Bozeman, Montana who transferred in at Mac's request after Aiden Burn was fired. She joined during episode "Zoo York". Danny teasingly calls her "Montana," which annoys her, but Sid poses the thought that Danny calls her that because he is harboring a crush on her. She has become good friends with Stella, who has given her some advice about living and working in the big city. Lindsay is known for Midwestern manners, such as taking off her shoes before entering a suspect's house. Despite being a newcomer to the crime lab, she seems to work well with the rest of the team. She takes her work seriously, especially when cases involve victims from small towns.
Former characters
- Detective Aiden Burn, played by Vanessa Ferlito (seasons 1-2). Aiden was a Brooklyn native who has the ability to adapt to new situations very quickly. She was dismissed from the team in season two, episode 2 "Grand Murder At Central Station" after becoming obsessed with a rape case and considering planting evidence to implicate a suspect, D.J. Pratt. She did not actually plant the evidence, but broke the seal on an evidence packet, throwing her credibility into question. Because of this, Mac felt he had no choice but to fire her to preserve the integrity of the CSI lab. Aiden agreed with his decision to fire her because she didn't know if she would resist the temptation in the future. After her dismissal from the crime lab, Aiden was apparently working on getting her private investigator's license while she was trying to bring down the rape suspect in the case that haunted her. In the penultimate season 2 episode "Heroes", she was ambushed and murdered by D.J. Pratt and incinerated inside a stolen car. In the heat of the moment, she left behind critical evidence that she knew would help her former colleagues close in on the perpetrator. Aiden's murder devastated Mac and the rest of the team, particularly Danny, to whom she was especially close.
Recurring characters
- Dr. Sid Hammerback (Robert Joy, season 2-), a Medical Examiner described as an "off-the-charts genius" who only recently traded in a career as a chef to become medical examiner.
- Jane Parsons (Sonya Walger), head of the DNA Lab.
- Zack Shannon (David Julian Hirsh, season 2 - ), a tech in the Trace Lab.
- Adam Ross (A.J. Buckley, season 2-)
- Dr. Peyton Driscoll (Claire Forlani, season 3 - ), a new Medical Examiner from London who is a love interest of Detective Mac Taylor. She used to work with both Mac and Hawkes. She will debut in season 3's premiere. [1]
- Detective Jennifer Angell (Emmanuelle Vaugier, season 3 - ), a new detective who helps the CSI's, while Detective Don Flack is recovering from his injuries. She will debut in season 3's premiere. [2]
- Shane Casey (Edward Furlong), season 3 - ), a young man embroiled in a case where a serial killer uses the codes and stories found on a series of trendy t-shirts as inspiration for his grisly killings. Introduced in the fourth episode of season 3. [3]

- The first two seasons of the show aired in the same time slot as NBC's Law & Order, a much older crime drama also set in New York City.

- Anthony E. Zuiker wanted The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" to be the show's theme song. However, CBS president Leslie Moonves turned it down in favor of "Baba O'Riley" which was also performed by The Who. [5]
- Stella's name was derived from Stella Kowalski from A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and Salvatore Corsitto's character Amerigo Bonasera from The Godfather (1972). [6]
