The Rachau Hillclimb was legendary for many reasons. Contestants showed imagination and flair with the design of their bikes and trikes and their costumes. The engineering and design highlights were many, ranging from the Starship Enterprise mockup spaceship to the lengthened swingarms crafted by French competitors in search of greater stability and traction. Many competitors experienced spectacular and painful crashes as they challenged the increasingly-steep hill. Amazing heights were achieved by a select few before their demise. Meanwhile, down in the valley the spectators roasted pigs and drank beer in outlandish costumes and roared encouragement while the TV coverage was introduced by a lederhosen-clad dwarf and the event featured the official Red Bull starter wearing top hat, coat and tails. |

It was rare for competitors to exceed the 140meter height mark.
