Orji Uzor Kalu (b. 21 April 1960) has been governor of Abia State in Nigeria since 29 May 1999. He is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a renowned strategic planner and an enigmatic leader. Once he assumed office in 1999, Abia State changed and became the fastest growing state in Nigeria.
Kalu was a successful business man before he ventured into the murky waters of Nigerian Politics. He did business both in Nigeria and abroad. In 1999, he battled with the likes of Prince Vincent Ogbulafor (who later became a minister in the presidency and later the National Secretary of the ruling PDP) to win the governorship of Abia state. He is from the Igbo heartland of Igbere in Umuahia, a town that has produced top-notch leaders like Michael Okpara and General J.T.U Aguiyi Ironsi.
In 2003, he had a relatively easy victory in the primaries of the PDP and went on to defeat his former deputy Chief Eyinnaya Abaribe who ran on the platform of the ANPP. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Political Science from the Abia State University, Uturu, IEA Certificate by USAID, Honorary doctorate degrees in Law by the University of Port Harcourt and Abia State University and City State University, Los Angeles (LA) California, USA.
He intends to run for Nigeria's presidency in the 2007 elections.
