Class project - teaching undergrads to edit wikipedia for the first time

I've been very grateful for the opportunity to work with Dr. Tricia King-Stargel, experimenting with including wikipedia editing as a course requirement in one criminal justice class in Spring '09, and again in a different class in Fall '09. Student response was enthusiastic - while all had used wikipedia as a resource in the past, only 1 or 2 had ever edited before. Many were confused because so many of their other professors had previously talked about wikipedia in derogatory terms, continuing to support the assumption that wikipedia articles are far more likely to contain misleading errors than other sources.

Our first try last spring went awkwardly. The second try seemed more cohesive: we asked students to find at least one article describing a term they were learning about in class and one article describing a famous criminal justice case they were studying which contained an example of this term. Then, part of their research project assignment was to edit those two wikipedia pages, referencing the example on the page for the term, and referencing the term on the page for the big case. One example we used was John George Haigh who had mistakenly believed ''corpus delicti'' (aka "body of evidence") meant that if he could destroy victims' bodies (which he did), he couldn't be found guilty of murder because there were no bodies as evidence of murder. Luckily he was wrong, and was convicted even without the bodies.

Some of the articles our students have worked on include DNA profiling, Psychological profiling, Groupthink, Masters of Deception, Robert Lee Yates, and Jeffrey Dahmer. We got them to report on their work using SurveyMonkey.

I have to confess (please forgive the pun!) that when I first imagined getting students to start editing wikipedia as part of their research dissemination requirements, I hadn't expected serial killers to be one of the areas we were going to be working to improve...

I'm very very grateful for feeling like it was safe to try this, and appreciate all the supportive comments and patience of editors like DreamGuy! I am planning to write up the methods we've developed so far (making it a requirement for every research paper), and try to get other educators to try it out. Hoping to write up the technique and recommend it to other educators. I would welcome hearing from anyone else who is open to trying this or has ideas for how to improve on it.

Hi. I saw your post on my talk page and that of the serial killer article talk page. I'd encourage you to go fill out an entry for this project on Wikipedia:School and university projects just to let people know about it in case questions come up later. The pages your students are editing can also have the talk page labeled with a template there that links to details on the project so editors on those articles can readily see what is going on and be especially careful. I'm happy to encourage anyone who wants to get more college students involved in Wikipedia, and I think many of the edits contributed will be very helpful in the long run, once other editors here get a handle on the extent of the changes and work with them. DreamGuy (talk) 13:50, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would also like to welcome you and your students. I was coming by to welcome you but DreamGuy beat me to it. :) I hope you and your students find this project enjoyable. I've been watching the page Serial killer but I haven't gone through the article to look at the sources and so forth. I look forward to rereading the article and looking at the sources. It was interesting to watch the edits being done with references included. Thanks and Happy Editing. If you need any help please do not hesitate.--CrohnieGalTalk 15:22, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To Catch A Dollar

I've left you some comments on the talk page of the To Catch A Dollar article. Sorry if I come across as being really harsh, it just a lot of nitpicking really. Overall, for your first article, it is pretty good.

Another thing. Your signature needs to be fixed. I believe using "DrMel" is fine, but signatures must include at least one internal link to your user page, user talk page, or contributions page. Having no links makes it really difficult to contact you (especially since your signature is different from your username). If you need help fixing your signature, see WP:FIXSIG. - Kollision (talk) 08:13, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Checklist & TCAD

Dr. Melissa, thanks for contacting me on my talk page about the Checklist article. I left an answer over there.

I read your To Catch a Dollar article, and recognized the subject instantly, since that is another interest that we share. I had read about Grameen Bank before and was very impressed with the thoughtful social and financial innovation of it and its founder, Mohammed Yunus.
I look forward to working with you on subjects like this. One small technical note - I moved the article to To Catch a Dollar, removed the orphan tag, and added a few links here and there, like any good WikiGnome would do! Spalding (talk) 16:03, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Usurpation of DrMel account

Well, it doesn't seem like you fully completed the process at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. Under Instructions, you seem to have only done the first two steps.
