Hey thanks for helping me start out. I am currently:

Deon has been leading on a young kids camp. Because of err.. behaviour of such 'youths' Deon is nacked. As a result, his wikibreak has been extended to the 24th of this month.

Welcome!

Hello, Deon555, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!

Here is my reply to the question you asked on the Wikipedia:Help desk: Just add {{attention}} to the top of the page. Though not a big red box, but a big blue one. If you believe the content is false and not represents a NPOV, {{TotallyDisputed}} might be appropriate. There are also other templates, see the See also section of this page. G'day

Hey Deon, nice to hear from you. Thanks for your message; I'm glad you found my comment about your talk link helpful. By the way, I noticed on your userpage that you go to Monash Uni, you're very young. Did you skip some school or something? Feel free to ignore that question if it's private, I'm just curious. :) As you know, I thought you were a few years older than you are and being at uni early could be why you seem older. Hope alls well with you, Deon, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 10:31, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You may be notable as a prodigy :) -- Samir धर्म 10:33, 4 September 2006 (UTC) (sorry for eavesdropping, by the way)[reply]
Hi Sarah (and Samir :) ). Nah, i'm not sure how that stayed there: i put it there ages ago on the template (for next year), and I thought i removed it.. :P Again: ur comments are useful. I'll be at Monash Clayton next year for a kinda weird experience to do with VCAL and VCE the year after.. I'll be doing 3 days at school (home :) ), 1 day Monash and 1 day at Work.. It's a trial-type thing that Monash Clayton is doing next year, and hopefully it will stay, kind of like an extra year (even though it's only 1 day a week), but that works out to around a term of uni, kind of like a 0th Year :P, to see if thats the course i'm really interested in, and give me time to Change my preference if need be. Thanks for the note. All is well here :), and I hope all's well there. Thanks! --Deon555talkReview 11:12, 4 September 2006 (UTC) No worries about the whole 'eavesdropping' thing Samir.. I dont *really* :P have anything to hide, and it creates a kind of community-conversation type which is all friendly and all, and yeh I'll go now :). Have a good 'un. -Deon555talkReview[reply]
Oh cool, that sounds really interesting. But I personally think you should go with the "child prodigy" story. We could even make you a special Wikipedian Child Prodigy template! :)
Eavesdropping is good, Samir, that's how I found out that certain doctors spoil their nurses with homemade brownies! Sarah Ewart (Talk) 11:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh I'm gonna love it :), and the whole Child Prodigy thing sounds pretty cool ;) *quote* Well _I'm_ notable enought to have a page on Wikipedia.. *quote* some friends i've got :P, :o i hope ur gettin some of those brownies :P --Deon555talkReview 23:49, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mine never turn out this well.
I didn't have time this weekend. I'll wake up early tomorrow and bake some cookies for the nurses. Here's a plateful for the child prodigy. Cheers -- Samir धर्म 02:39, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, I take it your a doctor, perhaps? :P. Oh and thanks for the cookies :) --The Child Prodigyquery me :)Review 23:49, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Samir is our resident doc. Or one of them, I should probably say. LMAO @ your sig, Deon. I think that's priceless. :D Sarah Ewart (Talk) 19:38, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Open proxy question

Hey Deon, I have a question and I thought you might be the man to talk to. Back in January, I read somewhere on Wiki that when someone edits a page and it inserts a whole bunch of backslashes, that it means they are editing from an open proxy and the IP or account should be indef blocked. This is correct, isn't it? Also, do you know if it's written down somewhere? I had a look around the open proxy project pages, but I couldn't find any information about it. Would appreciate the advice of a wise open proxy investigator. :) Cheers Deon, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 19:38, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Sarah, you just got in before my Wikibreak :). Yes, that's definetly true. Here's some references: [1](read the last dot point), [2](first sentence under Feb), [3] (read first sentence), [4] (second paragraph). That should be enough to convince someone ;). But yeah, if you see something like Don'\t or Don\'t, report it to AIV immediately for indef blocking :) HTH.. Send me an email at dwen92nopspam@gmail.com (you know what to remove ;) ) if you need anything while I'm away. Bye! :) --Deon555talkReview 22:42, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's great, thanks Deon. And thank you for your email addy, I've put it in my book. I hope you have a great break and see you when get back. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 23:08, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Erm... Deon... not sure how wise advice that is. If an escape character appears, it simply means they are probably editing from a proxy, not necesarily an open one. Badly coded proxies don't work well when POSTDATA contains a single quote, so as in the word don\'t , because they use single quotes to send strings of data. Probably best portscan them first to be sure it's an open proxy before putting it on AIV, because most proxies are closed, so only occasionally will an open one stuff up like that. AIV is full enough as it is. (see here for a list of escape chars) Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 23:01, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.
