Installation 01 is a fan-made first-person shooter video game based on the Halo series, being developed for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems in the Unity game engine. The game is neither supported nor endorsed by 343 Industries or Microsoft, but is being developed under Microsoft's "Game Content Usage Rules".[1] It will be released as a free download from the Installation 01 website.

Gameplay

Installation 01 is a shooter game where players primarily experience gameplay from a first-person perspective. The game aims is to recreate the 'classic' Halo multiplayer experience found in the original trilogy created by Bungie Studios, as per the developers, whilst still producing new and innovative content[2]. There are no current plans for a single-player campaign.

Much of the gameplay takes place on foot, but also includes segments focused on vehicular combat - more information on the available array of vehicles is forthcoming at the time of writing[3]. The available weaponry focuses on the original trilogy armoury, but will include additions from the Halo modding community and several custom-built versions of later Halo weaponry. Players may dual-wield some weapons, forgoing the use of grenades and melee attacks in favor of the combined firepower of two weapons.

The game is currently set to include all Halo 3 game types, with players able to create Custom Games of their own devising or play several Installation 01 original game types.

Installation 01 has been in development since late 2013, as a hobby project for Alexander Rogic (TheChunkierBean)[4]. During 2014, a team was assembled for the project and a demo was completed for for the Halo: Custom Edition livestream known as CE3. The CE3 demo consisted of 1 multiplayer map (a remake of High Ground) and only had the option of Slayer for gamemodes. Each game hosted could support a maximum of 16 players. Only two guns were present in the demo: the Assault Rifle and the Sniper Rifle. CE3 2014 aired on July 19, 2014 with Installation 01 as one of the applications shown and presented by TheChunkierBean and 343iChurch[5].

A Gameplay Teaser for Installation 01 was released on November 23, 2015. The game was shared on Reddit and other social media outlets throughout the day, with articles written by VG247,[6] Kotaku,[7] PCGamesN [8]. However, many fans found problems with the graphical side of the game.

In May 2016, the team was approached by TheSpartacat, a member of eSports organization PBL Halo, and asked the team if they wanted the organization to run an ad for the game during a tournament stream. A June Trailer Spot of Installation 01 premiered on PLG Halo's livestream and YouTube on June 8, 2016.[9][10]

On March 25th, 2017, the team released a Multiplayer FAQ video on Youtube[11], answering several fan-submitted questions and demonstrating the latest build of the game.

Original Scoring

On April 2nd 2017, Jafet Meza was announced as the lead composer for Installation 01 via a post on the official website[12], which included a reworked version of one of Halo 2's original soundtracks, Peril. Meza has replaced the previous composer, Vincent Lefebvre, although he remains credited in the fully original soundtracks Meza uploaded to his Youtube channel[13].

On April 14th, an update on the project's progress announced Enrique Laguilhoat - screenname Kyxe - would be joining Meza to collaborate on Installation 01's soundtrack.[14]
