History

The military base (1939-1967)

The idea of an airfield near Caen dates back to 1926 after a visit from a military delegation.[3] However, ministry of aviation decided its creation in 1930. [4] Work started in July 1937 and ended in March 1938.[5].

Air base 720 Caen-Carpiquet is inaugurated on 17 August 1939.[6] Taken by the Luftwaffe in June 1940, it serves as a rear base for the battle of Britain. The runway is extended and concreted by the Germans.

In June and July 1944, during battle of Normandy, Anglo-Canadian and German troops engaged in long and harsh fights to take control of the aerodrome. After the war, the airfield is rebuilt and refitted for the air force.

Civil airport (since 1967)

The 16 May 1969 decree places the aerodrome under the civil aviation general secreteriat, depending on transports ministry.[7] In the late 1960s, the platform is developped by Caen city and managed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

In May 1968, an air terminal is built to welcome a public hall, service offices and a restaurant.

Since March 2007, the airport has been managed by the urban community Caen la Mer.

By the end of 2008, a Caen - Paris-Orly airline is created with two round trips from Monday to Friday. This is a second regular line, after Caen - Lyon.

In 2010, the Caen - Paris-Orly line goes up to three rotations, then one a day on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Between July and August, the 13/31 runway is rebuilt, as well as the taxiway which is also enlarged.

In 2014, the low-cost company Flybe opens a line between Caen and London-Southend airport. The Caen - Paris-Orly line is abandonned after a decision of Hop.[8]

By 2020, the main 1900 meters long runway is expected to be extended and should be from 2250 to 2400 meters long.[9]

Facilities

Caen airport has two concrete runways (13/31 and 05/23) and two grass runways for recreational aviation.

The main runway (1900 meters long) is equipped with a high intensity approch and a 420 meters approch light. Runway 31 is equipped with a CAT I ILS.

JET A1 and AVGAS 100LL gas stations are available, as well as a 20000 litres supply truck.

These aid facilities are available:

  • 4 variable height gateways (maxi 4.50 meters).
  • Tri-tension starting unit GPU - ASU.
  • Trailers for Beechcraft.
