Backlash (2017) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and WWE Network event, produced by WWE for the SmackDown brand. It is scheduled to take place on May 21, 2017, at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois.[1] It will be the thirteenth event in the Backlash chronology, and the second Backlash to be held in the Allstate Arena, after Backlash 2001.

Background

The card will include matches resulting from scripted storylines and have results predetermined by WWE on the SmackDown brand.[2][3] Storylines are produced on WWE's weekly television show SmackDown Live.[4]

At WrestleMania 33, Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt to win his ninth WWE Championship.[5] On the post-WrestleMania SmackDown, Wyatt challenged Orton to a "House of Horrors" match, which was originally thought to be a rematch for the title.[6] Wyatt was then moved to the Raw brand as a result of the 2017 WWE Superstar Shake-up, but was allowed his rematch at the Raw-exclusive pay-per-view, Payback, in what was confirmed to be a non-title match.[7] On the April 18 episode of SmackDown, Jinder Mahal, who had moved over from Raw, defeated Dolph Ziggler, Mojo Rawley, Erick Rowan, Luke Harper, and Sami Zayn, who also moved over from Raw, in a six-pack challenge to become the number one contender for the WWE Championship at Backlash. During the match, Mahal received help from NXT's The Bollywood Boyz (Gurv and Harv Sihra), who made their SmackDown debut under their new ring name of The Singh Brothers.[8] The following week, after Orton defeated Rowan in a no disqualification match, Mahal appeared. Orton was then attacked by Mahal and The Singh Brothers, and Mahal stole the WWE Championship belt.[9]

On the April 11 episode of SmackDown, United States Champion Kevin Owens was moved to the SmackDown brand as a result of the Superstar Shake-up. However, he was already scheduled to defend his title against Chris Jericho at Raw's pay-per-view Payback. SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan decided that if Jericho wins the title at Payback, he will transfer to SmackDown. Also on that episode, a United States Championship number one contender's match was scheduled between AJ Styles, Sami Zayn, and Baron Corbin, who had confronted Owens upon his arrival to SmackDown. Styles defeated Corbin and Zayn in a triple threat match to become the number one contender at Backlash.[10] Over the next couple of weeks, Styles defeated Corbin in back-to-back matches where Owens sat at ringside on commentary.[8] After Styles defeated Corbin on the April 25 episode, Owens attacked Styles and Corbin joined in on the attack. Zayn came out for the save and took out Corbin, but was overpowered by Owens.[9] Afterwards on Talking Smack, Corbin attacked Zayn and shoved an official. He was subsequently suspended for one week.[11]

On the April 11 episode of SmackDown, SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos (Jey and Jimmy Uso) retained their titles against American Alpha (Chad Gable and Jason Jordan). After the match, The Shining Stars (Primo and Epico Colón) appeared, revealing they had been moved over from Raw as a result of the Superstar Shake-up, and attacked American Alpha;[10] The Shining Stars subsequently changed their ring name to The Colóns and defeated American Alpha the following week.[8] On the April 25 episode of SmackDown, a number one contender's Beat the Clock challenge was issued involving the teams of American Alpha, The Colóns, The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor), and Breezango (Fandango and Tyler Breeze). American Alpha defeated The Colóns, but Breezango defeated The Ascension in a shorter time, thus becoming the number one contenders for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at Backlash.[9]
