Lucario (ルカリオ, Rukario) is a fictional character in the Pokémon franchise. It was the second fourth-generation Pokémon to be revealed, after Munchlax.

It appears in the 8th Pokémon movie, Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Lucario is speculated to be a legendary Pokémon, because of its relationship with Mew in this movie. However, there has been no in game evidence to support this idea. In fact, the recently revealed screenshots of a male Lucario seem to hint this Pokémon is not Legendary (although the legendary Latios and Latias are assigned genders in the games, they were introduced together with a sort of duality). On the other hand, it is also shown to be caught by a Master Ball in a trade screen, a ball usually used for legendaries.

Lucario's name has been speculated by some to be a Japanese pronunciation of "Oracle" (O-ri-ca-lu) when the syllables are pronounced in reverse order (similar to how the name Beldum derived from the word dumbbell), although this has not been confirmed. Lucario may also come from Cairo, an Egyptian city, since it has been compared to Anubis in appearance.

Initially, most people tended to refer to this Pokémon as Rukario, which is simply a basic Hepburn romanization of ルカリオ. The official romanized Japanese name is, like the English name, Lucario (as depicted on a lot of Japanese merchandise).

In the video games

Lucario is a Pokémon appearing in the upcoming Nintendo DS versions of Pokémon, Diamond and Pearl. Though it was speculated for some time to be a Legendary Pokémon, a Japanese Gaming Magazine recently confirmed its Shinou Pokédex number as #113, and Dorapions as #128, which seems to suggest this is unlikely, but since Unown, numbered #201, is a legendary, it's still possible for Lucario. It is possible that there may be an evolution line of which Lucario is a part, but this is still pure speculation. Coro Coro Magazine has revealed that its elemental types are Fighting and Steel, a previously unseen type combination. CoroCoro Magazine has also said Lucario has two possible abilities: Inner Focus, and Humble Heart.

Lucario will learn the following new attacks: Force Exert, which is a Fighting type attack that does damage and may paralyze, Anticipate which is an attack that, if the opponent uses an offensive move, Lucario will attack first and with 1.5 times the power of the opponent's attack; Wave Guiding Bomb, which is a Fighting Type Attack, Faint Attack, which is an attack which ignores Protect and Detect, hitting the Pokemon, and In-Fight, which is fighting move. Lucario also knows these already existing moves, Hi-Jump Kick, Metal Claw, Metal Sound, Bone Rush, Detect, Swords Dance, and Quick Attack.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, 15,000 Rescue Points or more will result in "Lucario Rank" and a statue next to your house in the shape of Lucario.

In the anime

In the opening sequence to the American dub of Pokémon Advanced Battle, Lucario is seen resting on a tree with Mew flying around it. After about a month though, Lucario and Mew were replaced by Pikachu using Iron Tail. This is no indication that he is actually going to make an official appearance in the show as most of the other openings have shown Legendary Pokemon which have not appeared in the subsequent episodes. It is most likely due to the fact that it was taken from the 9th Japanese opening (some of the other clips were as well) which aired after the eighth movie which takes place at the end of the 8th season. In he 9th season, which is "Pokémon Battle Frontier", Lucario makes no official appearance. His appearance in the eighth movie seems to be its main role in the franchise.

Lucario is the main Pokémon star in the movie "Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew." Lucario is a servant to a noble of the Renaissance-themed city of Rohta named Sir Aaron. Given what Lucario apparently says in the Japanese version, Lucario sees himself as Aaron's slave. After Aaron seals him up in a magic staff at the film's outset, Lucario begins questioning any Pokémon relationship (compare with Mewtwo). Lucario demonstrates an adeptness to "Aura". The Lucario in this movie can also speak. If it turns out that Lucario is not a legendary Pokémon, then Lucario will be the fifth speaking non-legendary after Team Rocket's Meowth, Gastly, Lapras from the episode Holiday Hi-Jinx (although this was in fact telepathy, not actual speech), and the Slowking in the second movie.

In other media

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Lucario is one of the Pokémon featured in the Japanese eighth movie half-deck. Also, there have been several other Japanese promotional cards depicting Lucario, alongside promotional cards featuring the other fourth generation Pokémon. Lucario hasn't appeared in a US card yet.
