Jeffrey D. Sachs (born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1954) is regarded as one of the foremost economists in the world. He received his BA, MA, and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was professor at Harvard for a long time until he moved to Columbia University to head the University's Earth Institute.

During the early 1990s, Sachs was also an economic advisor to several Eastern European and former Soviet countries where he advised economic shock therapy to kick start their economies. He is a declared enemy of anti-globalization.
