Literary Work

Imran Series

Mazhar Kaleem acquired fame through writing on the famous Ibn-e-Safi's Character Imran Series in late sixties . Though after Ibn-e-Safi many writers tried to write Imran series but none survived beyond few novels except him. He has now written over four hundred novels and still going on. He has given many new characters to Imran Series and treaded various new topics in Mystery Novels like mystic crimes (Misaale Dunya) and Economical crimes (Kaghazee Qiyamat). Infact the list of subjects is not easily surmiable. Almost every one who has grown up in Pakistan after 70's and had been fond of reading in young age has read his one or more novels. Many of them give him the credit as generating an interest in habit of reading through his Imran Series. Even now his stature has grown up to the level that copycats like Azhar Kaleem have started using names similar to him to sell their Imran series.

Stories for Children

Mazhar Kaleem has written a lot of stories for young children. He has introduced many characters like Chaloosak Maloosak, Chan Changloo, Aangloo Baangloo beside using Umru Ayyar & Tarzan in his stories. These stories are very popular in young children and written in his characteristic style to teach lessons rather than only narration of story. Infact his character Chan Changloo was used by other authors as well to write stories for children.

Writing Style

Strength

Though character of Imran was concieved by Ibn-e-Safi and made popular by him as well, however Mazhar Kaleem has given him new persona and style. The primary difference between both the chracters which is often objected by Ibn-e-Safi's fans is that Imran has been turned into a superhero which he is not (in safi's novels). But that is the opinion of only a few die hard fans of Safi while majority of his fans have also liked his new shade. . However Mazhar Kaleem's style comes in the plot of the novel which is very strong and the suspense which is maintained till the end when Imran generally describes to his assistant Tahir as to how he did the job.

Weaknesses

Imran has more inclination towards Science in Mazhar Kaleem's novels than Safi's novels, which some times overshoots the rationality. In some novels he has got his mission accomplished with one phone call and decieving the head scientist into doing something which he did not understood while Imran knew. However in one interview Mazhar Kaleem described that he has always depicted that Imran's hobbies are excercise and reading latest scientific research in all the fields and this is on purpose to incite scientific interest in the readers. Surely lot of fans in their letters describe how they got interested in science after reading the novels. He said my job is to spark the interest which he has generally been successful.
