Chanderi sari is a traditional sari made in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, India.[1][2][3]

Legend and History

According to local historical records and folklore, Chanderi was founded by Lord Krishna's cousin Shishupala.

The famous weaving culture started during the 2nd century and 7th century. It has situated on the boundary of two cultural regions of the state, Malwa and Bundelkhand. The habitation of Vindhyachal ranges has wide range of traditions. In the 11th century the trade locations Malwa, Medwa, central India and south Gujarat gave its importance.

Themes and Motifs

These chanderi sarees are produced from three kinds of fabric i.e. pure silk, chanderi cotton and silk cotton. Traditional coin, Flora art, Peacocks and geometrics are woven into different chanderi patterns. The sarees are among the finest sarees in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk and opulent embroidery.

The weaving culture or tradition has been available from the 13th century. In the beginning, the weavers were Muslims, later in 1350 the Koshti weavers from Jhansi migrated to Chanderi and settled there. During the Mughal period, the cloth business of Chanderi moved to its peak.

Chanderi Sarees have been in news recently with Kareena Kapoor embracing the art of Chanderi weaving and making a visit to Chanderi during the promotion of her film 3 Idiots in 2009. Another pattern similar to popularly known Afroza Chanderi Pattern was worn by Vidya Balan in the episode of Koffee with Karan in 2013 which saw a spike in the demand for this pattern.

Current Shops

Though there are many shops and showrooms that claim to have Chanderi Sarees, buyers must research well before buying one. A fabric called as Chanderi made in the powerlooms of Surat, Gujarat has taken over the brand name, but is very different from the Original Handwoven Chanderi in texture, feel, weaving style and designs. Original Chanderi Sarees could be found in the Madhya Pradesh Government's showrooms called as Mrignayani Stores in metro cities, or in few franchisee stores of FabIndia, in cultural hubs like Dilli Haat and Chandni Chowk, or on eCommerce portals like Artsy India and Jaypore.
