Tomory Dodge (born December 23, 1974) is an American artist based in Los Angeles, California.

Born Jason Tomory Dodge in Denver, CO, 1974 to David C. Dodge and Madeleine Dodge. He began using the name Tomory Dodge while attending graduate school at California Institute of the Arts.

Education

He attended Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, RI from 1994 to 1998 where he graduated with a BFA in Painting. While at RISD he attended the school's "European Honors Program" based in Rome, Italy in 1998.

After spending time in both Denver, CO and Seattle, WA, he attended graduate school at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) from 2002 to 2004. While there he studied with many of the school's full-time and visiting faculty, including Charles Long, Charles Gaines, Anoka Faruqee, Sam Durant, Russell Crotty, Michael Asher and Martin Kersels, among others. Upon graduating with an MFA in 2004 he was awarded the Joan Mitchell Foundation's MFA grant.

Career

Before Dodge had finished his degree at CalArts he had caught the attention of a number of dealers in New York City and Los Angeles.[2] Shortly after graduating from CalArts he had two back-to-back solo exhibitions, one in New York at Taxter and Spengemann Gallery, and one in Los Angeles at ACME. He later left Taxter and Spengemann to show with CRG Gallery in New York. His first shows exhibited paintings both small and large in scale, painted in a heavy gestural impasto. Much of this early work depicted scenes of wind blown detritus in desert-like settings, often exhibiting surreal or apocalyptic undertones while maintaining a sense of playfulness. His work has long placed an emphasis on materiality and has had a strong interest in the American West as well as human interaction with the environment. While continuing to hold these interests, Dodge's work began to become more abstract beginning in the period of 2006 to 2008 and has continued to move in this direction. His work has been acquired by many public and private collections and he has been included in several publications on contemporary painting.

Tomory Dodge is represented by: Alison Jacques Gallery in London, UK. CRG Gallery in New York, NY. ACME Gallery in Los Angeles. Monica De Cardenas in Milan, Italy and Zuoz, Switzerland.
