"Rose's Scabbard" is the forty-fifth episode of the first season of American animated television series Steven Universe,[1] which premiered on March 9, 2015 on Cartoon Network. It was written and storyboarded by Paul Villeco, Raven M. Molisee, and Rebecca Sugar. The episode was viewed by 1.216 million viewers.
This episode is about Pearl coming to the realization that Rose Quartz, the love of her life, kept secrets even from her. This shatters her previous belief that she was Rose's sole confidant, and she runs away in grief over the loss of Rose.
Plot
The episode begins with the Crystal Gems gathering discarded weapons from an ancient battlefield. Lion finds a pink scabbard, which Pearl (Deedee Magno Hall) recognizes as having belonged to Rose Quartz, who led the battle 5,000 years ago on this very spot, with Pearl as her second in command.
Pearl offers to take Steven (Zach Callison) to Rose's secret armory, where she is certain the sword that goes with the scabbard must be. During the course of the journey, Pearl explains to Steven that she was the only one Rose shared her secrets with. They arrive at the armory, and Pearl is flabbergasted and incredulous when Steven says he has been there before, with Lion. Unable to find Rose's sword, Pearl describes it to Steven. Steven says he knows where it is, shocking Pearl further.
Back in the temple, Steven retrieves Rose's sword from the storage space inside Lion's mane, revealing Lion's connection to Rose to the Gems for the first time. Pearl is crushed to learn that Rose kept secrets even from her, and, losing her her temper, takes the sword and runs away.
Steven and Lion follow Pearl to the battlefield, where he pursues her up a series of precariously positioned floating islands very high in the air, making dangerous leaps from island to island. Pearl watches in horror as Steven misses the last jump and only escapes plummeting to the ground below by catching hold of the roots at the bottom of the island. Steven climbs up to the island and finds Pearl sitting alone, ashamed and depressed.
Pearl shows Steven a hologram of the conversation between her and Rose before the battle, when Rose declared her intention to fight for the planet Earth and Pearl pledged her loyalty to Rose, asking "why would I ever want to go home, if you're here?" Pearl wonders aloud what Rose would think of her now, to which Steven replies "Well, I think you're pretty great."
The episode ends with a montage in which Pearl returns Rose's sword to Steven, and Steven performs parlor tricks with Lion's mane to attempt to cheer her up. When he retrieves Rose's battle flag, Pearl dramatically narrates the events of the war to him. In the last shot of the episode, Pearl and Steven ride home on Lion, with Pearl pensively holding the flag.
Production
Episodes of Steven Universe are written and storyboarded by a single team. "Rose's Scabbard" was written and storyboarded by Raven M. Molisee, Paul Villeco, and Rebecca Sugar. Elle Michalka served as art director and Ian Jones-Quartey provided supervising direction.
Broadcast and reception
"Rose's Scabbard" premiered on March 9, 2015 on Cartoon Network. Its initial American broadcast was viewed by approximately 1.216 million viewers.[2] This was the first episode of the first StevenBomb—an event where an episode (sometimes two) is shown every weeknight for a week. This episode received less views than most episodes of Steven Universe due to the fact this was the Monday episode of the show's first ever StevenBomb event. On top of the drastic change in scheduling, this event only started being advertised five days before it started.
This episode received critical acclaim from most of the fandom and critics for its handling of very heavy topics.
