Song |
"Hung Up" is a pop–dance song performed by American singer-songwriter Madonna. It was written by Madonna, Stuart Price, Benny Andersson, and Björn Ulvaeus and produced by Madonna and Price. The song was released in October 2005, the first single to be lifted from Madonna's tenth studio album Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). It reached number one in forty-three countries, including Australia, Canada, Italy, France and the United Kingdom, where it became Madonna's eleventh number one hit single. It became Madonna's first U.S. top-ten single in three years.
Beginnings
Originally penned for a musical she had been working on, "Hung Up" was inspired by the 1970s disco era, in particular ABBA, Giorgio Moroder and Saturday Night Fever. A sample of ABBA's 1979 hit "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" forms the basis of the song. Madonna is only the second artist the band has allowed to sample their music, as ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have a strict "no sample" policy.[1] According to Madonna she approached Andersson and Ulvaeus by sending her "emissary to Stockholm with a letter and the record begging them and imploring them telling them how much I worship their music; telling them it was a homage to them, which is all true". Although they didn't say yes straight away, Andersson and Ulvaeus eventually gave permission for Madonna to sample their song primarily because they liked the song. "'Hung Up' is really good. If it wasn't any good we would not have said yes. It is a wonderful track - 100 per cent solid pop music."[2] They also asked for joint songwriting credits with Madonna and Price, and agreed to split the copyright and royalties, a move which the press soon picked up on, noting that Andersson and Ulvaeus would end up making more money from "Hung Up" than their original song. The Sunday Telegraph also noted that while "Hung Up" would easily outsell "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!", in effect it would also give ABBA their biggest hit to date. [3]

Madonna also samples herself in the song, with references to her previous recordings in the lyrics, including "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and "Love Song" (her 1989 duet with Prince). She commented at the time of the song's release that the new breed of female rock stars had been copying her for years, "so I thought it was about time I copied myself!"
On September 6 2005, two thirteen-second clips of the song leaked onto the internet. By October 13, 2005, the entire track had leaked, prompting Madonna's label to release it to radio the same day, a week ahead of schedule. It was officially made available as a download (via Apple iTunes) October 17, 2005, before the U.S. maxi CD release date of November 17 2005. It became Madonna's first single to be released digitally through online stores (including iTunes) before a physical format was available in stores.
Music video
The music video for "Hung Up" was directed by Johan Renck, and was filmed in various locations throughout London. The video was initially slated to be directed by David LaChapelle, but he pulled out at the last minute, citing creative differences. The video was filmed in London between October 7 and 9, 2005 at the Trocadero Centre, the London Underground, Great Guildford Street and Chinatown. Additional footage of the dancers were filmed in Los Angeles.
It was choreographed by long time Madonna collaborator Jamie King. Madonna is seen dancing throughout the video without any limitations - even though she broke eight bones in a riding accident just weeks earlier on her 47th birthday. On the filming of the video Madonna stated: "When I shot the video, none of the bones had gone together. Pharmaceuticals and my will got me through the shoot."[4] "Hung Up" was previewed on MTV's top-ten music video chart program Total Request Live on October 17 2005 and it's full length premiere took place on October 27th. It was also nominated for 5 video music awards in 2006, but did not win any. (Click here for music video)
Chart performance
"Hung Up" reached number one in 43 countries, Madonna's first international chart-topper since "Music" in 2000. In the United States, "Hung Up" debuted at number twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 — one of the highest debuts of 2005 — due to strong digital downloads. It became Madonna's 36th top-ten single, putting her two short of Elvis Presley's record of 38 Top 10 hits.[5] Its success was also significant as her previous three singles failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100. It went on to become her biggest single since "Don't Tell Me" (2001).
In the UK "Hung Up" debuted at number one, where it remained for three weeks. It became her 11th number one single there and charted for 29 weeks, her longest run on the singles chart. It spent a record seven weeks at number one on the UK Download Chart. In other major markets, it hit number one in Australia (one week), Canada (15 weeks, her longest run atop the Canadian charts) and France (five weeks), becoming her biggest selling song in the French market to date. Its worldwide popularity was displayed on the United World Chart, where it spent 15 consecutive weeks at number one, before it's follow-up single "Sorry" replaced it at the top. This marked the first time that the same artist occupied the number one and number two positions.
