Abak/Midim is one of the nine Clans or Districts in Oruk Anam Local Gogernment Area of Akwa Ibom State. It is as well one of the two Clans or Districts in the former Anam Local Government Area. Abak/Midim comprises thirty-seven recognised villages and about twenty-three yet-to-be-recognised villages. It is bounded in the north by Ibesit/Nung Ikot Clan, in the South by Edemaya Clan of Ikot Abasi, in the east by Ikpa Nung Asang (Essene) Clan of Ikot Abasi, and in the west by Imoh River which separates Akwa Ibom State from the Ogoni Nation of Rivers State. In terms of population, the area has about one-quarter of Oruk Anam's 172,000 people. The area is rich in arable farmland, which makes farming as the occupation of about half of the populace. Others are involved in petty trading, artisanship, and civil service. The area is also rich in crude oil as evident in the Oil Wells located in Ikot Inuen, Ikot Otu, Eka Ediene, Ikot Otok and Ute Etok. Fish and other aquatic flora and fauna abound in the creeks of Imoh River around Ikot Osute, Ute Etok, Ikot Ukpong Obioese and Ikot Eda. As earlier noted, the Clan is the gateway between Rivers State capital, Port Harcourt, and Akwa Ibom State, through the Nigeria's East-West road. In academics, the area has public Secondary Schools located in Ikot Inuen, Ikot Esenam, Ikot Osute, Ikot Akpan Essien, Ikot Owobo and Ikot Ukpongeren. It also has nine public Primary Schools. The headquarters of Abak/Midim District is at Ikot Akpan Essien. Some prominent indigenes of the area include Hon Okon J. Esenowo, Hon Peter Udo Essien, Hon Joe W. Ndok, Hon Louis J. Iyiet, Obong Vitalis J. Unang, Hon Udo Kierian Akpan, Pastor Paul Alexander Udoufia, and HRH, Apostle Christopher Ntang, who is the Clan Head of Abak/Midim, and the current Paramount Ruler of Oruk Anam. |
