Events
The Railroad Fire was reported on August 29, 2017 in the area between the communities of Sugar Pine and Fish Camp the Sierra National Forest. The cause is unknown.[1] On September 3, mandatory evacuations were ordered for the Sky Ranch Road area due to the fire being spread towards residential areas after a storm, along with the Cedar Valley Subdivision.[2] On Labor Day, crews wrapped historic structures in the Nelder Grove Historic Area, including cabins dating back to the late 1800s, in protective, heat-shielding material.[3]
As of September 7, Pacific Gas & Electric began working to re-establish electricity in the fire area and increased humidity overnight helped slow the fire. By the next day, the fire had burned 12,141 acres (49 km2) and was 50% contained, with 1,045 personnel fighting the fire.[1]
Air quality
The air quality in the area has declined rapidly due to the fire, which is burning along with two others in the region. Yosemite National Park reported that air quality was "unhealthy" in the park as of September 6. Additionally, the US Forest Service reported that air quality was "hazardous" in Wawona.[4] That same day, Yosemite High School released students early from school due to poor air quality.[5]
Closures and evacuations
As of September 7, Highway 41 was closed in both directions from Wawona to Sky Ranch Road. It is expected to re-open by 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 9. Sky Ranch Road is completely closed along with roads between Beasore and Sky Ranch Roads with anticipated re-opening for residents only by 5:00 pm September 8, Friday. Three Sierra National Forest campgrounds are closed: Summerdale, Big Sandy and Nelder.[1]
Bissett Station Road remains under advisory evacuation at Highway 41 and Round House.[1]
As of September 8, evacuations remain in order for Tenaya Lodge Resort, Sugar Pine, Calvin Crest, Paradise Springs, Cedar Valley, and Sky Ranch. Tenaya Lodge Resort will re-open via Yosemite at 12:00 pm, with Sky Ranch re-opening to residents at 5:00 p.m. Sugar Pine is expected to re-open at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 9, and Cedar Valley will re-open to residents by the end of the week.[1]
