Naamkarann (English: Naming) is an Indian Hindi romantic drama television series, which premiered on 12 September 2016 and is being broadcast on Star Plus. It is inspired by the 1998 movie Zakhm which was based on Mahesh Bhatt's life. Watch Latest Episodes Anytime on hotstar. Plot

Naamkarann is the story of little Avni, an illegitimate child, whose father Ashish and her mother Asha/Ayesha are not married but consider themselves as husband and wife. Despite being unmarried, Asha applies vermilion on her forehead to avoid social problems. Ayesha and Ashish still have a live-in relationship, unknown by the rest of the world including Ashish's family and his mother, Dayawanti. Avni, however, gets continuously teased by others because of the absence of her father. She deeply wishes for her family to become a 'normal' one but her father stays away most of the time due to his mother Dayawanti.

Back in 1981, a misunderstanding and a riot between fellow Muslim and Hindu villagers in Dayawanti's village resulted in Dayawanti losing her husband and since then, Dayawanti has hated Muslims. Though her sons and daughter did not know about the event, they knew about Dayawanti's hatred towards Muslims and this prevented Ashish from ever opening the topic of his relationship with Ayesha in front of Dayawanti. However, upon Avni's continuous insistence to come to her annual sports day, Ashish finally bears up the strength and informs his mother, through email, about his relationship with Ayesha, his daughter Avni and his not-yet-born child. Dayawanti fails to accept a Muslim daughter-in-law. Also, by then, Dayawanti had already given her word to Hemant, diagnosed with brain tumor, about getting Ashish married to his daughter, Neela. Dayawanti uses the situation to her benefit and convinces Ashish to get engaged to Neela.

At one point of time, after Ashish gets irritated as a result of his mother's continuous insults towards Asha and Avni, Ashish decides to go and live with Asha and Avni. Dayawanti doesn't stop, however. She performs a suicide drama and is successful in bringing Ashish back. After this, Ashish does not return back to Asha and Avni again, lest his mother should perform a suicide attempt again.

Avni realizes that she needs to face life on her own and that she had to overcome all possible hurdles if she wanted to have a 'normal' family. She joins a fashion show, but soon learns her sponsor is Dayawanti, and is kicked out. Soon, she meets Neela and becomes friends with her. Neela learns Avni's story. She is heartbroken for having lost her love, but angry upon Ashish for having cheated both her and Ayesha and for not standing up for his love despite Dayawanti's hatred.

Avni decides to make a movie based on her life. She makes the movie successfully. However, just before the release, Dayawanti gets informed about it, and in her efforts to stop the release before the deadline, Asha goes into coma as a result of an accident planned by Dayawanti.

Asha gives birth to a baby boy (Aman). Eventually, she wakes up and talks with Avni. Avni goes to inform the rest of the family that Asha has woken up from coma. On the other hand, fraught from the news of Asha's survival, Dayawanti comes to the hospital and kills Asha by suffocating her.

Soon after Asha's death, Dayawanti seizes the legal custody of Aman leaving Avni with no other option other than of moving to the Mehta House. According to Dayawanti, since Amol (as she did not accept the name Aman decided by Asha) had not had his own mother's milk, he was pure and bereft of the ill-culture of those 'other people'.

Avni's days at the Mehta House are difficult. Faced by the problem of untouchability by the Mehtas, Avni is not allowed to even be with her own brother. Dayawanti often sees Avni worshipping both the religions and is not able to bear her offering Namaz.

Events occur that finally convince Avni that her mother's death was indeed a murder. Avni opens a formal investigation into the case. The unusual behavior of Dayawanti causes Avni to suspect her. Upon further investigation, Avni learns that Dayawanti was the one who had killed her mother. Despite every effort to find proof against Dayawanti, Avni fails to find any due to Dayawanti's carefulness. Avni's friends finally come up with the idea of making Dayawanti suffer hallucinations. This finally results in Dayawanti accepting her crime in the court.

However, Ashish does not accept the fact that his mother had killed Asha. Ashish meets his mother in the jail the following day, and is told by Dayawanti that Avni had killed her own mother. Having no doubt about his mother's innocence, Ashish believes the surprising fact of Avni killing her own mother and orders the police to arrest Avni. After a lot of search, Avni is finally caught and sent to the remand home.

However, Dayawanti is not satisfied with Avni being in the remand home owing to her fears about the future. So to keep herself safe, she plans to kill Avni. Neela foils Dayawanti's plan, rescues Avni and takes her to a safe place. They decide upon leaving for New York. Dayawanti gets to know about their plan and meets with Avni upon her request to meet Aman for the last time before leaving for New York. However, Dayawanti shoots Avni with a gun in the chest and Avni falls over the cliff into a lake below. will Avni be saved or not

15 years leap

15 Years Later... Avni is now a grown woman and we are shown that she is entering a hospital and throwing money into the donation box in a mysterious outfit. On the other hand Ali who is still cheeky but now a fit man who owns a cafe called Chamko Cafe just like what Avni and Ali wanted since they were kids. The police enters the hospital and try to find who they think is a thief (Avni) to have left the hospital but she goes to the bathroom to get changed and then bumps into the one of the police officers named Neil. Avni then goes to the cliff where 15 years back she was shot and says that Dayavanti Mehta's death will be there. Avni realises that her locket (including Neela And Asha's pictures) cover has been lost in the hospital somewhere and is afraid that if she is caught her plans will end before they even start.

At the same time Neil bumps into Avni and they both fall into the water and Neil tries to perform CPR and Avni thinks he was trying to kiss her and gets angry. They both start arguing and realize they are trapped on a beach and both try to figure a way out of there. There Avni tries to find signal from Neil's phone but takes a call on Neil's phone and that is of Ali. Neil takes his phone from Avni and sends their location. But Avni starts moving somewhere and gets a car, and goes off with a guy. But, the guy tries to molest her and she gets saved by Neil's trick. Neil too comes there. And then it is night, and Avni tries to go away from Neil after having the wound that she got by the guy dressed. Police comes and Avni suddenly gets shocked and she got to know that Neil is a super cop. Avni doesn't take help of Neil and goes home alone.

Then there at Avni's home, Neela asks Avni where was she, but Avni avoids that and starts talking about something else. So Neela tells her not to avoid but tell what she has asked. Avni says that she is tired and will tell all in the morning. And in the morning she avoids the topic again. Avni is trained by Neela to take revenge from Dayawanti and to get her brother Aman back. Then in Dayawanti's house, Riya is getting engaged in a very rich family. Avni starts her journey by taking a new name Anannya verma and makes Riya her friend and enters Dayavanti's home with the motive of breaking Riya's engagement with Neil. Ali and Riya have arguments normally which might lead to love. Aman is a bad person and Avni plans to make him better. Neil and Avni became friends. Ali suspects Ananya is Avni. Ali finds out Avni is Ananya . Avni accepts it to Ali and makes him promise to not tell anyone about her being Avni. Neil starts to suspect Ananya about her identity. During the process, he falls in love with her. He saves her from gas bomb attack and confronts his mom about being rude with Ananya at their Roka as well. While, saving Ananya from the gas bomb he observes a gun mark on her body. All this while, Ananya tells everyone that her maid is her mother, in the sense that she prompts her maid to act like her mother. But, Neil doubts Ananya and her intentions. He gets Ananya's maid (Madhavi) to the police stations and threatens her. She reveals that she is not Ananya's mother and that Neela is her mother. Neil also gets a CCTV footage in which Ananya is trying to steal a pair of bangles. On the other side, Ali and Nannu get to know that Ananya is none other than Avni. They assure to help her in the mission. Neil's mom doesn't want Neil to marry Ria because of misunderstandings caused by Ananya. But, she reluctantly agrees because Dayawanti threatens her using some pictures of Neil and Ananya being together. After some time Neil's mom gets to know that Dayawanti is arranging Ria's marriage with Neil so that they get saved from bankruptcy. But, then the Mehta family cooks up a story and makes Shwetha and Prakash believe them. Later, Neil threatens Madhavi and sends her as his spy to Ananya and Neela. Madhavi sees Avni crying and telling Neela that she always fails when she is near success and that she has to succeed.She also tells that she has been suffering from the past 15 years with a bullet mark on her chest. Madhavi goes and confronts Neil and asks him the reason why he wants her to become his spy and reveals about the bullet mark as well. Neil remembers Nannu once saying that 15 years back Dayawanti shot Avni on her chest. Neil thus concludes that Ananya is none other than Avni. On the day of Neil and Rias wedding Ria decides to run away under the influence of Avni and Ali. She takes an rickshaw and goes to the airport where Dayawanti tries to strangle thus forcing her to agree. As Ria was getting ready Neela asks Avni to sit in place of Ria and marry Neil. Neil And Avni get married but Neil refuses of give a place in his home. Prakash brings Avni to Neil's home and asks him to accept her. On the other hand Dayawanti has to pay the loan taken from the bank. She doesn't pay money to the bank so Mehta house was out for sphirre. Neela and Avni decides to buy it but Neil buys the Mehta house.Avni faces many problems as she has to make first food but she can't Neil asks dd to bring food from the restaurant and give Avni she serves food to everyone and bebe gives avni some money as gift avni plan to escape with the help of ali.But Neil makes plan to stop avni and broadcasts a news that he has captured avni.so avni comes back and confronts Neil and confesses the truth of her being avni.then Neil says that he knows about it already and he also knows he was going to marry avni and he promises to avni he will punish dayawanti within seven days.on the other hand being humiliated dayawanti makes plan to reveal avni before the whole family.later a girl is shown who is actually neil's cop friend shows herself as anannya before dayawanti.dayawanti brings that girl before family but her plan fails and with that girl's help Neil becomes successful because dayawanti takes some wrong steps.dayawanti plans to burn avni but Neil finds avni and avni wants to kill dayawanti but Neil stops her and puts dayawanti behind jail.amol behaves well before avni and wins her trust.later riya and neil's mom together reveal avni as illegitimate child.so bebe ousts her from house.Neil goes to take avni back home but she refuses because she doesn't want to separate Neil from his family .on the other hand it is shown that amol is involved with Dayawanti mehta and tries to kill neil in a bomb blast but with avni love and determination neil will recover after a liver transplant and bebe apologies to her. now neil takes avni to a separate house and he has feelings for avni and Dayawanti is planning something new with Neil's mother to spoil Avni and Neil realationship.As per dayawanti's suggestion neil's mother apologies to avni and tells her to make preparation for Ganesh chauturthi in order to create an opportunity for the whole family to celebrate with Neil.But Neil's mother has an evil motive behind this.She wants to make Neil remember about her past love Juhi who used to celebrate Ganesh chauturthi and died.On the celebration day though Neil becomes sad but he attends the arti with avni.Later that celebration Neil comes back home with avni because avni wanted to live with the whole family.After that night Neil confesses to avni about his past love and says to her juhi was his past but avni is his present.on the other hand it is shown that juhi is alive and is under the captivation of guruma who is also called Raghu pandit (ragini pandit) whom Neil is searching because she is involved in various crimes.After it is shown that dayawanti suggests guruma to captivate avni in a brothel which guruma conducts.so guruma sends her man to kidnap avni.The man mixes sedative in Ali's jalebi which was for the whole family.so everyone becomes senseless except Neil because he didn't eat that.That time while being in intoxication avni indirectly says that she feels something for Neil.later that guruma's man accidentally kidnaps riya instead of avni and leaves his phone there.later avni finds that phone and gives it to neil.after that dayawanti and avni's brother frame Ali behind the kidnap of riya. To prove that Ali is the one, Amol quitely change the sim card of the found phone and save Ali's phone no. in it by the name 'boss'. To check whether riya is saying fact or not, Neil make a call on that no. And left everyone in a shock when they heard Ali's voice on the other side.
