The Walter Gerts House in River Forest, IL was originally designed in 1905 by Charles E. White, who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at his Oak Park studio.[1][2] On December 2, 1910 there was a fire that destroyed much of the house, but fortunately no one was injured. [3] Gerts hired Frank Lloyd Wright, who had just returned from Europe,[4] to remodel the house, which included totally reconfiguring the orientation of the central stairway and changing the upstairs floor plan.[2] Square spindles are featured throughout both to separate rooms and as part of built in radiator covers. The back door was moved from behind the kitchen to the center of the house. The central staircase features built in drawers on both sides of the landing and stained glass windows that match those in surrounding the front door.
