From 2012 until 2017 it again was called the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In 2017 the Ministry was renamed to Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Environment. The Ministry is headed by the Minister of Economic Affairs and the Environment, currently Eric Wiebes.

The mission of the Ministry is to "promote sustainable economic growth in the Netherlands." It focuses on the key areas of "Knowledge economy and innovation," "Competition and dynamic" and "Room to do business."
