On November 24, 2017, the Sufi al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed, North Sinai Governorate, Egypt was attacked during Friday prayers. The gun and bomb attack killed at least 235 people and injured more than 120.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Attack

According to local media, attackers in four off-road vehicles planted two bombs. After their detonation, they opened fire on worshipers at al-Rawadah mosque in Bir al-Abed. When ambulances arrived to transport the wounded to hospitals, the attackers opened fire on them as well, having selected "ambush points" from which to target them.[2][4][8]

Casualties

As of 16:50 EET the Mena News Agency was reporting that the attack had caused at least 235 fatalities and 130 injuries.[2] Police declared that victims were transferred to local hospitals as the military forces blocked the escape routes.[9]

Reactions

Domestic

According to a state television, Egypt has declared three days of national mourning following the attack. The Egyptian health minister spokesperson called this incident a "terrorist attack".[8]

Egyptian MP Mustapha Bakri called the attack a "massacre".[10]

International

  •  United Kingdom: Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the abhorrent attack on a mosque in North Sinai, Egypt. My sincere condolences to all those affected by such a barbaric act."[11]
  •  Russia: President Vladimir Putin said in a telegram of condolence, "The murder of civilians at a religious service stands out for its cruelty and cynicism. Once again, we are convinced that the concept of human morality is completely alien to terrorists".[12][13]
  •  United States: President Donald Trump tweeted "Horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt. The world cannot tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!"[14]
