Revision as of 17:26, 14 December 2017

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Place requests for new or upgrading of article protection, upload protection, or create protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Declined. This appears to be a slow-motion edit war between unregistered accounts. Both accounts claim consensus. Both say to take it to the talk page, but in fact neither account has made any comments there. Please make your case there, and possibly ping in previous discussants to get a broader view. If talk page discussion is ineffective, maybe ask for a third opinion. MelanieN (talk) 18:50, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pending changes protection: Consistent IP vandalism, plus bouts of disruptive edits by registered users who are new to the article. Every time the Santa Ana winds blow in Southern California, the IPs and newbies flock to this article to vandalize or do a complete rewrite out of thin air. Myself and a handful of other editors have long tended this article and repaired the damage from these seasonal bursts of vandalism and other less-than-helpful-or-well-informed edits. The article will go months without edits during the non-Santa Ana seasons, but always a flurry of bad edits as soon as these winds begin to blow: hence the Pending Changes Protection request rather than Semi-Protected. Darkest Tree Talk 00:03, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question: @Darkest tree: There was a big rewrite by IPs in May. I do not see it being reverted, and it doesn't immediately strike me as having been bad. Can you comment on this? Thanks. Samsara 00:19, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, happy to comment on that. While most of the edits by 24.61.220.85 were not "bad," I did actually go back in October and rescue some content that user removed (In the etymology section, specifically). I think it would have been better if these IP changes had been reviewed first. Also, that IP user seems to be the exception rather than the rule in terms of not making "bad" edits. To be clear, I am not attempting to embark down that slippery slope that would end with in argument for pending changes protection (at least) on every single article. I am only asking for it specifically on this article, because of all the articles I edit and of all those I regularly tend to, only this one has this consistent, seasonal pattern of lying dormant and then being hit with sudden vandalism and other edits that are (pardon the pun) driven by the winds that are the subject of this article. I'm also well aware that I don't "own" this article any more than any other editor—I'm just starting to feel like it's Groundhog Day with the editing pattern on this article and I'm volunteering to help fix that. Darkest Tree Talk 00:37, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Pending-changes protected for a period of 3 months, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Sorry for butting in if you were planning to come back to this, Samsara. This pattern - recurrent but not very frequent vandalism, combined with some constructive editing by IPs - seems well suited for PC protection. MelanieN (talk) 01:37, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@MelanieN: I'm not sure it's such a good idea for longer IP-only editing sessions, especially when different IPs are involved - unless the review happens very swiftly. Hence my hesitation. Samsara 02:02, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'll withdraw it. You were here first. --MelanieN (talk) 02:04, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not an easy situation, but I initially tended towards thinking that severity of the disruption was not particularly great relative to the possible loss of contributions that could occur by the display of the lock icon and/or slow accepting of good changes from rapidly contributing IP editors. I felt that this interpretation was confirmed by the above opinion that the changes were only partly flawed. So I've added the article to my watchlist - maybe if MelanieN does the same, we can manage any disruption that does occur by means of reverts and protections as may be needed in future. It's also probably worth thinking about whether the desire of new editors to restructure the article means that it could be more compellingly structured. I realise I'm in a somewhat privileged position of being offered a platform on which to make that remark without having to offer any specific suggestions - I actually have none at this time. But in my experience, thinking about why editors come and make certain changes can often help improve the article and reduce disruption. Samsara 03:22, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin on their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page, click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page," which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page, please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected, please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

protection was applied as indefinite 7 years ago. surely it can be lifted now. LibStar (talk) 03:38, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Courtesy ping to protecting admin Ckatz. Samsara 05:10, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotection: Per [edit] it seems like the vandalism was centered around the Army–Navy Game, which was [[2]] on Dec 9. We might be able to get away with decreasing level of protection. Frapsity (talk) 05:16, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I judged edits starting on Nov 16 to be part of the current spree of disruption; therefore, I believe that unprotecting so soon would be rather optimistic. Samsara 13:06, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
