I expanded the section on Operation Bootstrap. The article still needs to trace the emergence of Muñoz Marín's PDP (and his New Deal-style politics) in the context of ''both'' the independence movement ''and'' the Great Depression. The Great Depression underscored the vulnerability of the island's economy to fluctuations in the world price of sugar; and the Nationalists and the Socialists posed the first strong challenges to Puerto Rico's monocultural plantation model of development.
