The Land of Wind (風の国, Kaze no Kuni) is a geographical feature in the Naruto anime and manga series. It has a typically dry and windy climate, and is covered in large deserts as a result. Sandstorms are a common occurrence.

The Land of Wind is home to Sunagakure. It had been relatively uninvolved with politics until recent times, and even had a peace treaty signed with the Land of Fire. The lord ruling it, however, has been systematically cutting down its military force and transferring missions he would normally address to his own country's Hidden Village to Konohagakure. It conspired with the Land of Sound to launch a surprise attack and hopefully destroy the Land of Fire. The ninja of the Land of Wind tend to use wind and sand-based jutsu.

Sunagakure

Sunagakure (砂隠れの里, Sunagakure no Sato, literally "Village Hidden Among Sand", also known as "Village Hidden in the Sand") is one of the five great ninja villages, and as such has a Kage as its leader, known as the Kazekage. With its military forces being scaled down by the Land of Wind's lord, the Fourth Kazekage realized that they had to increase the quality of each ninja to maintain a military force (Gaara is just one result of that).

As more time passed, the lord started commissioning Konoha with requests he should have been making to Sunagakure. On top of that, he began cutting back on Sunagakure's budget. The Fourth Kazekage realized that if he didn't act quickly, Sunagakure would be in danger of disappearing, so he joined forces with Otogakure in an attempt to destroy Konoha and force the lord to re-establish Sunagakure's military force if he wished for his country to continue existing. With the failure of the attack and the death of the Fourth Kazekage, Sunagakure reallied with Konoha, and Gaara eventually became the Fifth Kazekage.

The techniques used by Sunagakure's shinobi could be said to have Ancient Egyptian and Arabian undertones: sand (Gaara), wind (Temari and Baki), and wrapped mummies (Kankuro's puppets).

The Land of Wind's daimyo (風の国の大名, Kaze no Kuni no Daimyō) is the Daimyo (warlord) of the Land of Wind. He is responsible for the budget cuts to Sunagakure that eventually lead to the invasion of Konohagakure.

Kazekages

Sunagakure has had five Kazekages (風影, Wind Shadow) since its foundation.

Kazekage, First

The First Kazekage (初代風影, Shodai Kazekage) was the first Kazekage and probably the founder or one of the founders of Sunagakure. He wore a mask similar to Kakashi Hatake.

Kazekage, Second

Nothing much is known about the Second Kazekage (二代目風影, Nidaime Kazekage).

Kazekage, Third

  • Unique traits: Iron Sand techniques

The Third Kazekage (三代目風影, Sandaime Kazekage) was the strongest Kazekage in the history of Sunagakure. He was kidnapped by an unknown enemy, but was never found due to the outbreak of war that forced the village to end their search. His body was never found, either, so he was presumed dead. Sasori turned out to be his killer, and had converted the Third's body into his strongest puppet, which he used against Chiyo and Sakura Haruno.

The Third had a special genetic trait that allowed him to turn the chakra he molded into magnetic forces. This ability allowed him to create his iron sand, based on the jutsu used by the previous host of Shukaku. It is unknown if this was a kekkei genkai ability or wholly unique to the Third, similar to the First Hokage's ability to perform Mokuton techniques.

Kazekage, Fourth

The Fourth Kazekage (四代目風影, Yondaime Kazekage) was the previous leader of Sunagakure. He is the father of Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro, and husband of Karura. By his design, the one-tailed Shukaku was sealed within Gaara so that he could become the village's ultimate weapon. However, as Gaara grew and his abilities began to manifest, the Fourth realized that this was a poor choice in hindsight and started to view Gaara as a failed experiment who was a threat to the inhabitants of Sunagakure. In time, the Fourth began issuing orders for Gaara's assassination, none of which were ever successful.

The Fourth was also the one to join with Orochimaru in his attack on Konoha, hoping to teach the daimyo a lesson and to re-establish the Sunagakure's military force. Things, however, did not go as planned for him; just before the Chunin exam's third stage, where his attack was planned to take place, he was betrayed and assassinated by his ally, Orochimaru, who stole his identity. Ironically, the son whose life he made miserable, Gaara, becomes the new Kazekage in his place.

Elders

Chiyo

  • Age: 80+4 (deceased)
  • Rank: Unknown, probably: Jonin5
  • Height: ?
  • Weight: ?
  • Birthday: ?
  • Blood Type: ?
  • Registration #: ?
  • Unique traits: Poison expert, specialist in ninja puppetry

Chiyo (チヨ), often called "old-lady Chiyo" or "Granny Chiyo" (チヨバア様, Chiyo-baa-sama) by the Sunagakure villagers. She and her brother Ebizo are highly revered in Suna and are known as the Siblings (御姉弟, Gokyōdai). She is knowledgeable when it comes to handling certain poisons and used her skills often during the third Ninja war, only to be countered numerous times by Tsunade's medical expertise. This is why she holds a grudge towards "that slug-girl" (あのナメクジ娘, Ano Namekuji-musume), which is her name for Tsunade. She is the grandmother of Sasori. Her son was the enemy of Kakashi Hatake's father, Sakumo Hatake, whom she still holds a grudge against. It is unknown if this son also happens to be the father of Sasori.

Chiyo is responsible for sealing the Shukaku inside of Gaara, under the orders of Gaara's father, the Fourth Kazekage.

In battle, Chiyo uses the ten puppets created by the first Puppet Technique user, Monzaemon. After an extended battle that Chiyo and Sakura had against Sasori, during which all three were fatally injured, Chiyo saves Sakura by transferring some of her own life force to Sakura. The jutsu was originally developed for Sasori, in order to "give life to a lifeless puppet." Because Sakura was not completely dead, Chiyo survived the jutsu. Later on though, she uses the same jutsu to bring Gaara back to life, thus using up her remaining life force and ultimately, passed away.

Trivia

  • Chiyo is arguably the oldest character in the series. Though her current age is unknown, she has to be at least 80. Her grandson, Sasori, left Sunagakure more than 20 years ago, already being a legendary puppet maker. This probably makes him about 40 years old. Assuming that both Chiyo and her son had their children at age 20, this brings Chiyo's age at 80+.

Ebizo

Ebizo (エビゾウ, Ebizō) is called "old-man Ebizo" (エビゾウジイ様, Ebizō-jii-sama) by the Sand villagers. He and his older sister Chiyo are highly revered in Sunagakure and are known as the Siblings (御姉弟, Gokyōdai). He is Sasori's grand-uncle.

Baki

Baki

Baki (バキ) is the sensei of Gaara, Kankuro, and Temari. During the Chunin exam, he had confidence in the ability of all of his team members, although he comments on Kankuro not taking the battles seriously enough. He also worries frequently about Gaara's mental stability and his control over Shukaku. Baki was also the one who murdered Hayate Gekko after discovering him eavesdropping on a conversation about the plot to destroy Konoha, in order to earn the trust of the Sound Village. Baki led the fight with the Sand and Sound shinobi in the Konoha stadium during the invasion and had an unfinished duel with Genma. Having realized that Orochimaru deceived not only him, but all of Sunagakure, Baki has notably changed into a better person after the invasion, and it is quite possible that he regrets his actions.

Temari

Yura

Other Villagers

Karura

Karura

Age: ? (deceased)2

Karura (加琉羅) is the wife of the former Kazekage, and the mother of Gaara, Kankuro, and Temari. Against her wishes, her husband had the spirit of Shukaku sealed within her unborn son. She died while giving birth to Gaara as a result of this. Before she died, she cursed Sunagakure, hoping her son would avenge her death and the horror she had been put through.

Trivia

  • The name "Karura" is made up of three kanji. Ka (加) means "Addition" or "Include", Ru (琉) means "Lapis lazuli" and Ra (羅) comes from the word Ashura (阿修羅) "Fighting demon". The Japanese believe Lapis lazuli is a sacred stone in which the power of Buddha dwells. So the name Karura could be interpreted as meaning "Addition of (Buddha's) power to the demon". This is exactly what Karura did: she gave the demon more power by feeding it with her hatred.
  • Karura is the name of a man-bird deity of Japanese mythology similar to the Hindu Garuda.
  • Gaara believes his mother's spirit lives in the sand he uses to fight. In his fight against Sasuke, he attempts to talk to "her."

Monzaemon Chikamatsu

The very first puppet master, he created the Ten Chikamatsu puppets, which are powerful enough to take down an entire castle in the right hands. It is unknown how Chiyo acquired them, but she's more than skilled in their use, as seen when she uses them against Sasori.

Yashamaru

File:Yashamaru.jpg
Yashamaru

Yashamaru (夜叉丸) was a medic-nin, the younger brother of Karura, and thus the uncle of Gaara. At first, Gaara thought that he was the only one that cared about him. Yashamaru told Gaara about things like physical pain, emotional pain and love; concepts Gaara was completely unaware of in his childhood. He was commanded by the Fourth Kazekage to assassinate Gaara, but was given the choice in deciding whether he wanted to proceed or not. Yashamaru willingly accepted the command in order to avenge his older sister's premature death. The assassination attempt, however, ended in a desperate suicide mission and ultimately failed. Before he died, he told Gaara that no one had ever really loved him, not even him. This left Gaara even more of an emotional wreck than he already was. His death caused Gaara to become somewhat psychotic.

Trivia

  • In the Polish and Italian versions of the Naruto manga, Yashamaru is portrayed as female rather than male.
